The 5am Workout

I woke up at 4:15 AM so I can work out at 5 AM. I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now. Just go to bed early enough that you get 8-10 hours of sleep. Give yourself some time to wash up and eat a light breakfast (whole-wheat bread and Nutella, yum). I like getting my workout out of the way AND I like working out when everybody else at the gym are dedicated enough to be there at 5 AM. They are few enough that I don’t have to wait for equipments. Preach on, brother.

The biggest problem with this is what your night time routine is like. You can’t expect to do any partying or have much of a night life on nights before you’ve got to get up early.

I’ve shunned the “night life” and college parties ever since I came to college. I knew I was different than most kids, and that’s one of the main reasons I’m joining the Marine Corps. I’m a no-nonsense, hard working kid and if these “peers” of mine think that they’ll be tomorrow’s big-shots, maybe they’d better mature first…

I know some kids at Penn State work hard, but this place ranks in the top ten party school rankings every year, for a reason.

You can do both brohan, stop thinking you’re so above everyone else. I once thought like that too, but now I’m a servicemen and a college ‘party-kid’

It can be done!

I wasn’t the one who said I was above anyone. If that’s what you think I am, then maybe it’s true, in this regard. We’re talking about people with no motivation, no dreams, and zero responsibility except for the one (school) that they’re wasting their parent’s money on.

Chill! You can party (albeit not every day, but 2-3 days a wekk allright), have a 3.5 GPA, a good physique and great athleticism all toghether. We are 20 years old, for christ’s sake!!

Yeah no shit. I’m going to get drunk whenever I can before I have to put on the uniform everyday rather than only a couple times a week.

I can’t believe that nobody has stated the obvious: that this kid is 17 and maybe needs his sleep. There will be plenty of time for working out as you get older. Better to get good sleep and maximize the effects of puberty while you can. I know I grew a good inch or two between the ages of 16 and 19.
I went to bed at 6pm and woke at 4:30 am and was at the gym at 5am,stayed till 6:30,grabbed some breakfast and was at school by 7:15 when the bell rang.I didnt have a problem with it,i could lift the same amounr of weight and my grades went up since i did my work in class cause i knew i wouldnt have a lot of free time to do it at the house.

And i grew an inch in height and a few lbs in weight,i loved it.this gym doesnt open till 7am though,so i cant do it in the morning any more

Put the clock on the other side of the room. When it goes off you have to get up and walk across the room to turn it off. Makes it easier for me as I’m already half way to the shower by then.

As everyone suggested, going to bed early is the way to go. You’re not going to do well if you’re getting up tired.

I really hate 5am workouts but have done them before. I have a few suggestions. As someone before said, your spine will be a bit vulnerable first thing so I’d avoid heavy spine loading exercises like deadlifts and squats. I’d also avoid super low rep work. I would do a basic, easy bodybuilding style program. Seated rows, lat pulldowns, leg press, stiff leg deads, lunges, bench press, shoulder press, bicep curls.

If you give yourself something like a 5x5 on squats you are setting yourself for failure that early in the morning, trust me I’ve been there!

Good luck.

If you’re doing your workout “just to get it out of the way,” of course you’re going to dread leaving the comfort of your bed to throw around weights you don’t want to be gripping in the first place. Your grogginess/lack of enthusiasm will probably just make for a shoddy workout that wasn’t worth your time. Maybe that’s not your time of day for lifting – hell, maybe this isn’t your time in LIFE for lifting – t’aint impossible. At the very least, get your own act together before you’re helping your friend with his own athletic regimen.

Very good but at the end of the day you need to maximize your skeletal growth as a teenager. You don’t want to end up five foot eight with a chip on your shoulder if you have the potential to be taller than that.

All the best dhuge67, I know if i was at the sharp end, your the type of guy i would want next to me. You can still have heaps of fun without the piss, pies and dickheads that you will meet ‘‘partying’’

To the op get your arse out of bad, have trained consistently at 0400, need to get your sleep and as someone has stated have your supps next to you and ingest them when the eyes open, if you have to, you will find a way.

Partying/night life?
fabmxer wrote:
Even if I get more then enough sleep, I can’t get up early either…
In my experience most people who say this are fooling themselves when it comes to getting enough sleep. Personally I function just fine on 5-6 hours sleep a night, but I try to get in as close to 8 hrs as possible so that I know my body is getting enough rest. I have a hard time staying in bed for more than 8 hrs. Once I wake up that’s it I’ve got to get moving.

The best piece of advice on this I know is to make it your routine. Go to bed at roughly the same time every night and get up at roughly the same time. Even on weekends when I can sleep in I still wake up around 5AM. I’ll stay in bed an hour or two more (and maybe drowse off), but by 7AM I’m up and doing something. But the factor that makes this work for me is that every night around 9PM I’m getting tired and ready for bed. I might stay up if I have company or I’m doing something, but after a certain point my body is telling me it’s time for bed. Being an older guy (40), married with kids, and pretty much settled in with a routine makes a big difference in this. I didn’t used be so regular in my sleep patterns, but if you want to make something routine you have to incorporate it into your life.

No I didn’t see your post.

What can I say dude, great minds think alike. I’ve been doing this for years.

I didnt read all the post, but what they said is true. If you want it bad enough you will do it. I recently, about 3 or 4 weeks starting training in the morning 6 am. I dont have time in the afternoon anymore so i have to wake up early to do it. sometimes its hard and i wanna go back to sleep, but i get up and go, and when i do i dont regret going.
