All things considered I would say you are the most impressive guy in the over 35 forum. Huge numbers for a guy not training for a powerlifting meet and doing all kinds of swimming and throwing.
Goat, I hate to swim inside. Unfortunately I have to practice my turns so means using the cement pond. Nice young coach from a local college has really helped me over the last couple of years learning turns She tried to get me to wear a pair of them almost naked racing shorts but I stay with the body suit. Feels more like what I used in the military.
Barry great to hear from you. You still running around Texas and killing the back work?
DBasler, I think I just blushed, thank you very much. Still have my copy of Inside Powerlifting by Terry Todd. Actually did my first powerlifting meet in 1982. Ace bandage knee wraps, old style thin belt turned backwards, and SAC issued sneakers, gym shorts, and Tshirt on. Had plans to be the greatest powerlifter ever but the military had other plans. Threw things in Middle and High School and came back to that in my 30s and again at 50. I’ve swam my whole life and it was part of my military job. I do it now more for my head than my body. Being long winded comes from being Cajun.
Busier retired than I was working. Everyone figures you have nothing but time on your hands so keeps inviting you places.
Anyhow,
7/28 = 1000m swim/2 mi walk
7/29 = shoulders/bi
7/30 = throws
7/31 = legs/ back
8/1 = indoor swimming
8/2 = Gluttony. Started day cooking my world famous, top secret formula pancakes at the Vets home. Lunch at Mother’s house with 4 or 5 sets of brothers and sis in laws and supper was a barbeque at a nephews house with about 20 other assorted relative.
8/3 = Chest/tri
8/4 = throws
8/5 = 1000m swim. Then cut down 2 trees at the back of property. Full day job by the time I got the trees down and cut up. Sweat and saw dust covered me so grabbed the dogs and headed back to the river. Let the dogs swim while I did my beached whale impression and cleaned off.
Hopefully back to more details tomorrow.
PS Is the section with the pix and vids we put on here still working? Went to some and all I get is the initial page but can’t bring up anything else.
I thought longwindednes was just you having a senior moment
I imagine retirement would not sit well with you.
really - there are only so many nights to read the greats and work your way through
a magnificent wine cellar
glad to see you busy, I am envious of the swimming
Harry, I see from looking at the National Track and Field rankings that you recently put up a season best in the shot. Nice.
Hey old timer, still wearin’ a skirt. I’ve kind just begun snooping around again for some old nuts like ourselves who carry heavy objects. Still a very large man!You look great!
Not sure where the hell this will come out under this new format. Just spend the last month + at our house in the Philippines. Christmas and New Year’s with all the relatives. Training involved walking down to the beach, morning swim in the ocean, sit on beach and drink San Miguel beer, chicken or pork adobo for lunch, swim again, nap, eat dinner of Bangus, prawns, and crab bought straight from the boats, drink brandy (they love the stuff) at night while playing mahjong and being served snacks by the nieces. It’s a hard regime to follow but with proper training and perseverance doable.
Last year I wasn’t focused but have decide to just concentrate on my throwing this year. I’ll still swim for health benefits and my lifting will be directed at throwing. I’ll be in the states at least until July this year (if I can bear it) so I’ll be able to get in at least 6 or 7 meets.
Only thing I see at the bottom of the page is reply so like I said not sure where this will go.
Sorry man, been out of the country and just getting back here and confused as hell by the new format. Glad to see your back at it. I’ll see if I can find your posts.
Welcome back Harry…sounds like it was very difficult o be out of the country!!
Its a rough schedule Harry- It takes dedication
Thanks for stopping by.
Main lifts I’ll be concentrating on are the power clean, power snatch, bench, and front squats if I can swing them. I’ll be trying to go low rep and heavy with these lifts. Around those lifts I’ll be throwing in mil press, seated dumbs, flyes, Incline bench, stiff leg deads, and dumb curls. Add a little core with plate twists and just plain sit ups and that’ll be the basics of my lifting. Since I’m going back to throwing the javelin I may add in some pullover work, too. After over a month of just swimming I started back yesterday easy.

Afternoon, indoor swimming, laps, lost count
After a month and a half away, I can feel it today. Couple more sessions of 8-10 rep range and I’m going to bring most of my sets down to th3 2-3 range so I can get the strength back up for throwing.
Discus throw this morning, power position only. 21 throws. Like I said, I could feel the chest work from the day before.
Jumped out of bed this morning ready to get some throws in. Threw on the sweats. Grabbed the rest of my gear an headed out the front door, Right into 20 degree f and a wind. Damn. Ok, Ricky Bruch use to throw in Sweden in the winter, no problem. Got to the school, walked the maybe 200’ to the ring, made 9 throws “warming up”, said to myself, “yeah, that’s good for today”, and headed to the gym. Drank coffee with the owner then figured I better lift something.

New hammer Strength thingy. Like a lever on hinges, weights on the side, 2 depths of handles to hold. Use for either deadlift fashion or using more legs like squats

Took a shot at power curls, basically a clean with the palms facing out. Al Oerter swore by them. Not real fond of the straight bar but managed some
95 x some x 3
Swam and did some throwing yesterday. Too damn cold for the metal shots so I used 2 really old indoor hard plastic shots (12# & 16#) outdoors. Plastic wasn’t near as cold as the metal shot. Got in 20 good power postion throws and another 20 throws with the javelin. Swam for a 1/2 hour in the evening at the indoor pool. Off to the gym at noon with the wife today.

Seems strange when you get hit with ice and snow and we get nothing up here. Bench and deads are looking great as always.
It’s already going away. People here just aren’t use snow and ice and think a big truck automatically makes you a good driver.
