PX - I agree with your generalization (are we allowed to generalize anymore?).

Here’s the rub: Those who hands down are convinced that ‘global warming’ is indeed ‘manmade’, or who think that it’s largely anthropogenic are the ones who will move to pass laws, restrictions, penalize, criminalize or otherwise force behaviors on others. We see it with ‘carbon taxes’, cap and trade, and other regulation.

There’s no doubt there has been warming. And cooling. And warming. And cooling. It’s cyclical. It’s natural (at least it has been).

I’m no stranger to the research. While you were in school studying biology, I was in graduate school studying Earth systems and geophysics.

The fossil record is filled with evidence of climate and temperature cycles. Check out the Palocene/Eocene Thermal Maxim. Makes today look like an ice age, and the dinosaurs weren’t even around to fart themselves into global warming. The current science is not settled science regardless of what Al Gore, the Climate Change Commission, NPR, and the nightly news are feeding the masses.

My point is that EVERYTHING is going to be politicized. If we’re going to raise the specter of “Global Warming” and the possibility that it’s “Man Made”, then inevitably “the solution” is going to be someone stepping on someone else’s freedoms. I know you’re not a proponent of “The Patriot Act” as you’ve stated it several times. It’s the perversion of Congress’ attempt to ‘protect us from ourselves’ and it’s not too far removed from what’s been proposed and in store to make you protect yourself (ie. criminalize) from your own environmental behavior.

Additionally, I work in the energy sector for a company that’s THE world leader in solar power, alternative energy, and ‘green IT’ – and I can tell you that it ain’t about saving the planet although your news casts and politicians might have convinced you and others otherwise.

That trend is potentially more worrisome than global warming.

But back to topic, I have a neighbor in Austin who has grown banana plants for the last 20 years. A few years ago his plants started producing fruit for the first time.

Here is a US Plant Hardiness Zone map showing trends for plants since 1990.

I haven’t fully bought into the global warming theory, but there are definitely weather pattern changes occurring on a global scale.

Yeah, it’s been pretty muggy lately. That’s not new for MI, though. At least it’s not like, hot AND muggy like it was earlier in July… good God.

It’s funny because I grew up in New England and moved down here not sure about how I would deal with the heat. Three years later and I love the 100 degree weather. I have found this of a lot of people that come to the south from the north as well, whereas a lot of people I have met that were born in texas talk about how great the winters must be in the north. I think after dealing with any extreme of weather for over 20 years, you are probably going to be ready for a change.

"It’s not as hot as you thought
Houston has neared 100 degrees this summer, but hasn’t made it yet
By ERIC BERGER
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Aug. 13, 2010, 9:17PM
Houston has been oh-so-close to triple digits this summer, hitting 99 degrees on four separate days. Although it could do so this weekend, the official thermometer at George Bush Intercontinental has not yet tickled 100 degrees.

If Houston can continue to dance just under the century mark for a few more weeks, it will pass as the first summer in more than a decade without a 100-degree day. That would be especially surprising given that August has been a real scorcher. With an average temperature of 88.1 degrees, this month currently is on pace to be the warmest August on record in Houston. Although the city hasn’t had a summer without a 100-degree day since 1997, it wasn’t always this way.

From the 1890s through the 1990s, Houston typically had five years each decade when the maximum temperature never broke triple digits.

“There are a lot more years without 100-degree readings than I expected,” Don Oettinger, a meteorologist with the Houston/Galveston office of the National Weather Service, said after reviewing the data. Things seemed to have changed beginning with the last decade. During the 2000s, every summer had at least one day that crossed the 100-degree threshhold.

“This is the longest streak ever of years with 100-degree readings,” Oettinger said.

So what’s happening?

Texas state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon, a professor at Texas A&M University, said it’s hard to draw any conclusions about climate from this limited data set.

The location of the official temperature sensor has changed from downtown to Hobby Airport to Bush Intercontinental Airport during the last century. The instrumentation has changed, too, and the city has grown up around the airport.

“I’d say urbanization has had a minor effect, maybe a degree or two on the hottest days,” he said. “Likewise, Texas temperatures are overall warmer than they were for most of the previous century, contributing another degree or two on most days. Weather randomness also contributes to streaks such as this. So I’d apportion the blame equally among local urbanization, global warming and random luck.”

It is just that I specifically remember as a kid the news stating that “93 degrees” was the hottest it got one summer…and now we are up ten degrees more than that as a regular fucking occurrence…but there is nothing to worry about.

I remember playing in the sun as a kid all fucking day long. You can’t stand out in this shit now for more than 10min without feeling like you just got burned to near second degree.[/quote]
WAH, WAH, WAH…

I haven’t seen a hundo in MINNESOTA, since I was a kid. It’s cooling off up here. 102 sounds pretty standard for a hot Texas summer day, and if not, what the fuck IS the weather supposed to be like in Texas in the summer? You can count on lower/mid ninties in MN summer, I’d expect Texas to have at least 10 degrees on us.

What’s with this thought process that the temperature just keeps going up the farther south you go? It matters where you live, what kind of landscape you have, what kind of bodies of water you have, what kind of weather comes into your region.

San Diego was 70 degrees the entire time I was there. I head North East to Phx, and it’s 98 at 6 in the morning.

yeah no kiddin, nothin like 98* and what feels like 104% humidity

Probably that whole thing about the equator and the suns rays, just a guess though… I get what you’re saying, but typically further south will be warmer. Sort of like how you would expect FL to be hotter than MN on any given day

100 degree temps are normal for TX summers…just of matter of how early or late in the summer it hits. BUT what gets us agitated is the damn humidity and dew points…i.e.heat index. Sure hot is just hot…but a 100 degree day in say,Phoenix, probably feels more comfortable than a 100 degree day in Houston. The heat indexes were not as bad here last summer. This summer definitely feels hotter.

Doesn’t matter if you’ve been in TX for 30 years…for 30 years you fucking hate the summer heatwaves. I bet a good portion of the “natives” in your area feel the same about winters.

That doesn’t mean it is usually anywhere near 100 fucking degrees. That is what my computer is reading as the temp currently. How the hell are people who don’t live here going to tell the people who do what we should find normal?

We’ve had steady temps of +100 for a couple weeks now. Plus 80-90% humidity puts the heat index at 120+

Yeah it was in jest Bigboss but you forget we are in Texas, the Home of Chuck Norris. We have a high standard that Texans have and should adhere to it in all aspects of life. You can complain but only to yourself.
Even our mighty Texas Rangers played a day game today 2pm I believe in honor of Chuck Norris, but honestly the heat is bad for the kids and elderly. Just a few blocks away from me a 2yrs old was left in the car for 3hrs this past week and that poor baby died. It really breaks my heart, imagine that girl suffering, while the whole family is inside watching TV.
