I had the same debate you did months ago and found a easier solution. Instead of dishing out the $2,500 for the tempurpedic, I bought the Isotonic Mattress topper for $400. It’s like a feather bed in the sence you lay it on top of your already existing mattress, but the quality of the foam is so superior to tempurpedic I cant describe it in words. I have standard Nautica queen sheets on my mattress wich ran me $1000 back in the day. Id say the Isotonic had made my bed better then when I first got it. I dont mean to sound like a Bed Bath & Beyond sales rep but that is my honest opinion.
Like an old friend of mine once said “Anything you buy that makes you happy is money well spent”. So if you can afford the luxury, indulge and god bless you.
I just looked at Absolute Comfort’s website, and the product looks very interesting. I’m thinking about getting the “Majestic Comfort” model, but I called them and they said that they’re not sold in any stores, i.e. there’s no way to try it out first. Also, there’s a 30-day return policy, but the customer would have to make arrangements and pay to ship the thing back (which I assume would probably run a couple hundred bucks or so). How did you get – pardon the pun – “comfortable” with buying one without trying it out? I know they say they’re slightly softer than Tempurpedics due to the difference in foam density, but how different would you say it is? (Because I can try out a Tempurpedic in a store near me, so I’m wondering how close an indicator it is). Thanks in advance.
Exactly what my parents did. They put the 2" memory foam pad over their regular mattress and damn if it isn’t comfortable. A lot cheaper way to go if you ask me.

I usually recommend either Select Comfort or Tempurpedic.
There are some newer companies making the memory foam beds now that are cheaper than Tempurpedic. Just make sure that the density of the foam is the same so that you are comparing apples to apples. If the foam density is the same and similar warranties/etc apply, get the cheaper one.
As far as Select Comfort, you can get a Sleep number bed without a pillow top and then add a 2 inch memory foam mattress topper (Sam’s was carrying these earlier this year for less than $200).
No matter what you buy, ask your doctor to write you a prescription for one and you will not have to pay sales tax on it. Also, these can sometimes qualify as a tax deduction, but since I don’t know exactly how that works, I’ll let someone with more experience on the tax end chime in.
Have you seen the SAT mattress(self adjusting technology)?
Its an air mattress like the numbers bed but without the motors and such. The wool cover seems to address the sweating issue that was brought up by the tempurpedic people. I’m in exactly your shoes and have been researching beds for two weeks and came across www.directcomfort.com
The mattress looks bad ass and its still cheaper than a tempur pedic. Does anyone have one of these?

I did this as well, although I cheaped out and got the one being sold at Costco. Still it’s very comfy, and way less hassle than my old featherbed topper.
What mattress is completely free, you already have it, wherever you go in the world you can bring your mattress with you, its great for your back and overall totally badass???
Do ya give up yet? Ahh yes, I figured you would.
The answer:
…the floor!
I sleep on it, its great. I go to a hotel, I don’t have to worry “oh, this mattress is too stiff/too soft, its not like the one at home. Boo hoo! I can’t sleep, I’m not used to it!” I could be in fuckin Africa and still have my “matress” and it’ll feel just like home. Cheap as hell too. If you sleep on your side, take a small pillow and keep it between your legs.
Okay, I’m sold. Tempurpedic it is. The memory foam toppers are interesting products, but my old mattress is just crap, so I figure I might as well just get a whole new one.
Next question–which model, Deluxe or Celebrity? I was just thinking top of the line Celebrity, but someone earlier mentioned not to get a pillow top.
TC, I’m glad you chimed in because you, my friend, might be the best one to ask this question of: How is the Tempurpedic (or these memory foam mattresses in general) as far as using it for “other” activities? I picture the “doughy-ness” of it potentially creating problems – like if you’re doing it missionary, I picture her ass slowly sinking deeper and deeper until it’s completely sunken, like in quicksand, and she’s folded up like a cell phone, with arms and feet both pointed straight skyward. Does this occur?
Do you find it conducive to all sorts of illicit activities?

LOL… ya know, there are surfaces all over the house that work nicely. You don’t have to do it exclusively in bed.

just be careful about the shower…someone might just drown…and depending on how things are going at the time, if it’s not you, you might not notice until it’s too late.
Not that I’d know that from experience or anything…
Has anyone who does have a memory foam or latex mattress experienced the “woman-folded-up-like-cell-phone” problem (or other sexual activity-related problems)?
It truly is a concern of mine before I buy . . . .

I do occasionally lose one in the mattress, only to have her resurface a few weeks later.
It’s nice when it happens. It’s sort of like finding loose change in the sofa.
No, no, the surface “gives” a little, but just enough to keep her from sliding into the headboard.
Thanks. Good to know, since sliding into the headboard is occasionally an issue on normal mattresses. I look forward to the occasional finding of a forgotten hottie in my mattress!

LMAO! Dude, that was beautiful - what an image, although I think you would be sinking in at the same time too. I was slogging my way through some rather dry work today and that just made my afternoon (as did TC’s response about it being like finding loose change again).
