Teen BBer Dies - Steroids a Contributing Factor?

Teenage bodybuilder Andrej Gajdos dies after artery in heart bursts

A NORMAL human heart weighs close to 400g, but when bodybuilder Andrej Gajdosâ?? heart finally ruptured, it weighed a staggering 680g.

The 19-year-old, who stood at an intimidating 7ft 2in and weighed 127kg, longed to be as big as wrestler-turned movie star Dwayne â??The Rockâ?? Johnson. But, in the end, it was that desire that killed the young fitness fanatic.

Mr Gajdos was standing outside a supermarket in the British seaside town of Weston-super-Mare when he suddenly fell to the ground, the Bristol Post reported

The main artery that runs through the chest â?? the thoracic aorta â?? had burst. It was so rare and so serious, that he didnâ??t stand a chance, dying almost instantly.

His training program came under scrutiny at an inquest into his death where it was revealed that he went to the gym twice a day. It also heard that traces of anabolic steroids and testosterone were found in his body, and his family found four different types of steroids in his flat.

The inquest, at Avon Coronerâ??s Court, heard that Mr Gadjos had extraordinarily large organs, which may have put strain on his heart muscles.

Dr John Oxley, who performed the autopsy, said he had â??never met a man so bigâ??. Normally someone with such enlarged organs had a genetic abnormality.

â??Andrejâ??s heart weighed 680g, and a normal heart is between 400 and 500g. He wasnâ??t a normal man. It is extremely rare for a young person to have a torn aorta like that. I have only seen one other case in 15 years.â??

Dr Oxley said steroid use would have caused his heart to get bigger, which increased the chances of a thoracic rupture.

Yes.

You do hear about this kind of thing occasionally, usually footballers or some such vigorous activity , in the prime of their lives dropping dead, from previously unknown heart conditions.

From the photo’s in the article he certainly didn’t have a pro bodybuilders physique, looked like it could be obtained without any drugs.
If steroids were a factor it probably wasn’t a big one, when you consider the amounts a serious amateur takes, let alone what a pro takes.

7’2" that’s one big, tall guy and he is going to need a big heart to pump blood around, so its not very accurate comparing the size and weight of his heart to an average man. I guess he would have feet much larger than a average man too.

what irresponsible, garbage reporting. I mean seriously. The dude is 7’2, and we’re comparing him to a ‘normal’ human? You know what causes enlarged organs? Growth hormone. You know what makes a dude grow to 7’2? Growth hormone. This kid obviously produced excessive growth hormone. To blame this on steroids is truly insane.

Agreed. It’s sensationalism. Look at the article’s concluding remark:

â??Such a tear is a very rare event, and the most likely cause is genetic. But I cannot record a verdict of natural causes.â??

But “Teen BBer Dies from Aortic Rupture Probably Due to Underlying Health Problems” doesn’t make for a very exciting article title does it?

Not that the juicing did him any favours, though.
