Wait, what?
This is pretty cool, but Laplanders aren’t Finns, right?
True, Laplanders live in Northern Finland, as well as Northern Norway and Sweden, but they’re very much different from the people that live in the Southern parts of those countries.
Of course, maybe it says something about that in the text (I’ve yet to blow it up).
Thanks!

Most Welcome TC…Actually, I did not realize that the Lapps were considered to be different in the regions you mentioned. I guess they are somewhat like the Kurds and Basques in that regard then…Enjoy!

We don’t really consider them to be different, they just have their our culture, language and heritage. We like them as a part of the Finnish culture, and also have several laws to keep try and keep their culture alive.
In Finland, there are around 6500 Lapps - I mean Sami, which is what they call themselves in their own language.
3000 of them speak a language of their own, Saami, as their mother tongue. This is divided between three languages in Finland, and there are also more languages in other parts of Northern Europe. As young kids might not learn Saami, there are concerns of the languages dying out.
Lapps are the indigenous people of northern scandinavia and parts of russia. Genetically speaking, they are “different” from the other scandinavian peoples like the native americans are different from the americans that arrived from Europe/elsewhere back in the day.
