Taurine?

Taurine seems to be relatively inexpensive, so I’m thinking of trying it out, but I haven’t been able to find much good info on it.

How many grams would be a good starting point? When should it be taken? Mixed with Surge? Mixed with Power Drive? Pre-workout? Post-workout? Something else?

Also, have you used it? If so, what were you results? When did you take it?

Thanks

What benefits are you hoping to get from taurine supplementation?

I remember Poliquin recommending 3g of taurine before betime as part of a ‘Yin stack’ to settle your nervous system and help you sleep better.

From personal experience I’d say to start off with a very low dose and build your way up. I picked some up cause it was cheap, took a teaspoon of and and had me the foulest smelling gas ever. And I don’t use that term lightly. The type of farts that will give you a great inner shame about your existence.

Browner poo.

Thanks, I have seen CP’s Yin stack before. Doesn’t he recommend to take 3g twice in the evening? (with magnesium, Vit B6 and some other things).

I’ve also heard that CT has recommended taurine somewhere, but I can’t seem to find it.

Currently, I’m doing a labour job in construction, so it would be mostly for that, and to be able to lift with the same intensity as if I didn’t have the job. Primarily, I want to increase recovery time.

I’ve found that Glutamine really helped me in terms of recovery time. Also, make sure you’re getting enough sleep, and dont’ drink alcohol.

I’ll further investigate Glutamine, but the other two are already done. My priority after the gym (which I go to almost right after work) is Dinner>Dishes>Lunch>Bed.

Unless I get 8 or more hours a night, I don’t do as well as I’d like to at work or in the gym.

After a bit more research, I’m gonna go with 3 grams of Taurine w/ Power Drive. I’ll use this most mornings, and after the more demanding workouts, depending on how I feel.

My only worry now is competitive absorption.

Great question.

It seems from your post that you are a bit sketchy about the effects/expected results you will get from taurine. Also, do you know that many protein powders have taurine in them? I don’t know the quantity, it may be a pixie-dusting or it may be a gram or two, you should investigate.

My understanding is that taurine is a cell volumizer. An expected result of this is increased protein synthesis which, theoretically, could lead to better recovery time. In my opinion it would only be a good choice, like 90% of supplementation, if all other aspects of your training are in order and if your ultimate goal is dependent on such a response.

You’re right.

Currently I’m following Berardi’s 7 Habits to the letter, and am slowly going to increase carb intake. Shortly, I’ll begin taking bi-weekly BF%ages, but thats not what I’m looking at taurine for.

Like I said, I’m looking to increase recovery time and I am looking to have more energy in the morning (I already strive to get as much sleep as possible).

Anyways, taurine is relatively cheap; about 0.04 cents per gram, so at a serving of 3 grams thats 0.12 cents.

However, I will try the stack without taurine, and then add it in and see how it goes, unless anyone has any other suggestions.

Some things you might want to look into is if the 3g of taurine in that stack you’re planning will interfere with the absorbtion of the 3g of tyrosine in the Power Drive. Some people warn against taking too many amino acids at once. Its debateable if that would be a problem- but for your goals it might be best not to take the risk of dulling the powerdrive effects.

Taurine is usually added to energy drinks, the logic being that it smooths and extends the buzz of caffeine, gives you the kick without the shakes. So if you take in any caffiene preworkout or in the mornings it might be good to take it with that.

Aside from that taking it in the pm to calm the CNS and ready the body for sleep seems to be the popular choice. I’m just not sure that taking a supplement used to calm the nervous system in the morning or in the absense of caffiene is your best choice.

Isn’t this one of the main ingredients in Red Bull and other similar energy drinks? Does it have a mental focusing effect like tryosine?
