Last night I had an absolute blast in the weight room.
Warm - Using the hula hoop for shoulder dislocates works really well!
Ankle
A1) DB BP 25x5 30x5 35x5x5
A2) Bent Row 30x5 45x5 50x5x5
I bumped everything up I keep underestimating, so just went with it. Also there was a hipster doing 30lb db bp next to me and I had to beat him.
Then I tried the one and two handed carries from the Loaded Carry article The Secret of Loaded Carries
One Handed:
Waiter Walk - 15 lbs, down the gym and back for each hand. It’s all balance and core. I was surprised at how hard it actually is to carry something over your head like that, also are you supposed to lock out your arm? I did and still felt like a wobbly toddler. This one I keep for sure!
Rack walk - 25lb kettlebell. It took me a while to remember how to rack a KB, but after I got it this was actually pretty easy, I think I did four lengths each side. I didn’t write any of this down.
Suitcase walk - 50lbs, down the gym and back for each hand twice stopping at the ends to readjust. Fuck this is hard. Once again, like a drunken toddler. Keep!
Two Handed:
Press Walk - 15lbs down the gym and back four times, this one fit directly with the must think about sucking in my gut insight. Not as fun as the one handed, but still fun.
Double Rack walk - 25lbs down the gym once and back. There aren’t two sets of KBs so I tried it with DB and the DBs are the gigantic plastic coated ones so I couldn’t really rack them, and it was just fail.
Farmers Walks - 50lbs down the gym and back 4 times. I think I’ve complained about it before, but the weights are all new, and the knurling hasn’t worn down at all, so they rip my hands apart. At this point I couldn’t take it anymore, so I made a little sling out of a towel and just made it grip work too. It worked out great. Gripping 50lbs is challenging, but not impossible, so I could concentrate on the actual making it down the length of the gym. The DB kept sliding around the towel, so I’ll have to make adjustment with that, but I’m going to play with this more in the future.
Cross walks - 15lbs, down the gym and back. I was kind of lazy with this one. I didn’t want to go get new weights, so 15 way way too light for one side. Its something to come back to after the other have gotten old.
Then I tried Frenchies plate flips. These are just fun! I managed to do the 5 really easily, so just a set of 15 flips for each hand. The 10s weren’t so bad, I did 3 sets of 15. There were a few misses where everyone turned to look at me, but that was mostly due to my mind wandering. Then I tried the 25 but that was too much. I managed to flip it, grab it and follow it to the ground.
Overall super fun times, variety really is the key! My grip kills today
(though I hear emoticons are a T-Nation no no?)
I shot guns with some friends when I was in Vegas in the summer. I walked in without ever shooting a gun and within 30 min (signing waivers, choosing guns and brief safety) I had an full auto M-16 in my hands happily firing away. I shot a 9mm after that. They just ran us through basic safety and hovered over us while we were shooting making sure we didn’t do anything stupid. The rush I got from shooting that full auto was pretty awesome. We all had fun with it anyway.
I had a similar experience shooting in Canada, though we only shot handguns and shotguns, no full autos in Canada. Most of the people there never shot before and they got a quick safety lesson and away they went.
The begining of the video was the basic safety we got before shooting.
Those plate flips look pretty wild!
yup - those are the plate flips. I through them in once a while to work on grip issues. The most I ever worked up to was a couple of flips with the 25lbs plate. Its a good way to end a workout.
i’m going to have to try ab contraction in standing balance. i never thought to contract my abs…
that was interesting what you said about MMA guys doing BJJ. I almost enrolled in BJJ over the summer, but it had a MMA focus and I suspected there might be something like that going on…

Correct on both accounts.
Yoga gets a lot of hate, but it’s actually really good mobility stuff. It has a lot of the same movements as mobility vids. I think it’s mostly the word yoga that off put people. There’s a yoga class at the gym that’s 99% female and a ‘strength and mobility’ class that’s about 50% female. I’m pretty sure it’s the exact same class, but given a more male friendly name as to not scare the men.
I really do need everything spelled out for me step by step when it comes to physical activity. The handstand overly dissected: beastskills.com/tutorials/tutorials/33

That video was awesome. His reaction to the shot gun kick back, lols. So, basically nothing to worry about, just don’t point guns at people. Got it.
though I hear emoticons are a T-Nation no no?
if so, then oops.
I like the way you try and figure out what you are doing. i need those kinds of explanations, too, otherwise I feel lost.

Yeah, sometimes it’s the most obvious things that are the hardest to notice. I walked around for a while looking for a box of cocoa while I was carrying around a box of cocoa. The ab thing makes sense, in line with the recent article, 21st Century Core Training 1 , they’re stabilizers and balance is stability.
I’m going to sound like such a stereotyping asshole (sorry Bobbi!), but I’ve gone by the sweeping generalization that those (men and women) who decide to join an MMA program for the most part are aggressive assholes. Of course there are outliers, but they tend to be the ones with the biggest egos, and the ones least likely to actual be out to learn anything. They just want to prove to you that they know stuff, and can inflict pain. So then when it’s MMA guys/or gals doing BJJ there’s a lot of ego to work through, and a lot of ‘uh sorry I hit you it’s instinct.’ Yeah, bullshit. In my experience, you can’t go anything but 100% with an MMA guy doing BJJ. If they started in BJJ, Judo, MT or any traditional (not wrestling MA), they’ve already been broken and no longer have the ego and can interact on a normal level. I can see BJJ being widely applicable to women, but BJJ at an MMA school is going to scare off most women. I know what I’m doing and it scares me off.

I would just like to point out that I may have a little ESP going on. I wondered about the core as the root on my balance issues and there’s a core stability article. Now, the new article is on YOGA! Yoga, Yes Yoga, For Big Bastards
Ha it’s funny that you wrote that post before you knew of the article.
It is good for mobility, but it’s so repetitive to me!
And I hate to repeat myself lol
I missed Judo this week. I’ve been a sniffling mess, and didn’t want to be patient zero at a new academy. I was planning on sitting on my ass all night watching NCIS (I have a ridiculous weak spot for formulaic entertainment.) but then started reading your logs and had to get off my ass. My ass thanks you.
Warm
Ankle
1 arm snatch 35x5x5
Ok, kiddos (I maybe posting this a beer or two in) I’m not doing these to my full capacity. The final catch/be under part (need to learn oly nomenclature) scares me a bit so I end up doing weights that are way too light. I’ll work on it, but it’s something I can’t keep fooling myself about. I just like my teeth, you know?
Suitcase Walk with the towel gripper 50x two gym lengths (I counted this time, it’s about 20 steps)
Waiters Walk 20x 5GL
I had just read the core stability article 21st Century Core Training 1 so played with it a bit.
Anti-Extension
Ab rollouts I can’t do the ab wheel yet, so I stuck to using a medicine ball. I just dicked around a bit, no real counting.
There is nothing related to blast straps at the gym, though they look super fun.
Anti-Lateral Flexion
Just did the Waiter and Suitcase walks.
Anti-Rotation
ISO Pallof Press - At first I thought these were simple, but then I took a step out of line with the pully. Not turning is a feat. Loved these! Keep for sure!
So, that was my PW inspired workout, I felt great afterwards. Thanks guys!

I’m just so uncomfortable in the whole realm of physical activity that I like to know exactly what I have to do, and exactly what is expected of me. Training partners find it really frustrating when I learn something new.The first time I took a sledge hammer to a time was a disaster. I was with a group of guys and the only instruction I was given was to hit the tire. No how, no what angle, no how to direct the recoil. I just didn’t get it. I think it’s why I like BJJ so much. They tell you exactly what to do step by step until you’re comfortable enough to figure it out on your own.
I was about to watch my Dexter last night but my stupid blue ray player wasn’t working…big crap.
Ended up renting Salt from the local PPV.
and please tell your ass welcome for us ![]()

lol! I just commented similar to this on my log! I’m the exact same way. I need to be shown step by step what to do.
I haven’t stopped by here in a while PcH! You’re doing lots of awesome stuff! Nice!

This is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard.

If you mix up stuff, you can make it less repetitive. There’s a lot of redundancy in what each move focuses on, so you can make a grab bag of movement to choose from. It’s just like lifting, there are multiple ways to work everything.
As I complained about not wanting to do a measly wall supported handstand against the wall, this was presented to me.
I guess that handstand isn’t that much of a risk.
I moved some stuff about on Sat.
Warm
Ankle
DL 135x5 145x5 155x5 165x5x5 175x5 185x5
I was feeling frisky so I just kept adding on 5’s. 165 went up really easy, and in all actuality 185 didn’t feel so bad, I just didn’t want to jinx it. I’ll rep with 175 next time and then add 5’s to see where it goes.
LP 11?x5x5
MP 20x5x5
And then it was closing time. I’ve been going too late for the steam room lately, which means I should leave right now to not miss it tonite!
