I was just given an Rx for Penicillin for strep throat, and have recently (last few weeks) been taking probiotics. Is it ok to take the probiotics while on the antibiotic? Or should I just wait?
Yes. It’s very much okay.
Often times docs will recommend/prescribe probiotics to people who have been, or will be on antibiotics for a long time, in concert with antibiotics.
Antibiotics are a reason to take them.
There’s a good chance probiotics will be largely wasted while taking antibiotics, so I’d save them until you’ve finished your prescription.
LOL.
Both of your points are why I debated it.
1-The anti is killing good bacteria so the pro can restore it
or
2-Is the anti just going to flush the pro
I’m on them for 10 days, stupid strep throat

If money is an issue, HK24719 makes a decent point: you’ll get the most bang for your probiotic buck if you wait. However, if you’re not pinching pennies, and gut health is important to you, taking the probiotics while on the antibiotics will have a real, positive impact. The anti-biotics will not completely nullify it.
I would say take them. Alot of them are pretty well proven to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, which is something we all would want to avoid…? Probiotics are notoriously hard to get to “stick” in the colon, so i would view this as a golden opportunity to get some open space for the probiotics to graze on.
You can be fairly sure that the antibiotics are going to mess your stomach up, perhaps for a long time, and this is largely preventable by probiotics.
If you take it orally at the same time it will probably be a waste.
BioSignature (whatever faith you have in that) recommends a rule of 2: 2 caps either 2 hours before or after taking the antibiotic 2 times daily.
I think that’s just a rule of thumb. I don’t know why it’s 2 caps rather than 1, or 3, 4, etc, because every probiotic product will differ in the amount of live cultures in each cap, even amongst batches of the same product, but the 2 hours before and 2 hours after might have a more credible basis.

The whole caps thing is seemingly useless as you mentioned - shelf probiotics range easily from 500 million each to 13 and 50 billion each, even up to 80 billion. I’d advise checking on the potency of what you’re getting, of course.
