I guess it all depends on how you are viewing “over-rated.”

If you’re talking mostly influence, then yeah, Page is not necessarily over-rated, and in that case neither is Kirk Hammett. There are a million kids sitting in their bedrooms trying to play metallica solos right now, just as there are for Zeppelin. (i know you didnt actually use the term over-rated to describe Kirk, but i got that impression. Maybe im wrong)

However, there are far better technical guitarists out there, who i believe were also far more innovative. But they never accomplished the same main-stream appeal that Zeppelin did. (Steve Vai being a perfect example)

I appreciate Page’s contribution to music and music history but his playing does nothing for me. Just my own personal preference.
I can accept this explanation but I don’t agree with your last sentence in regards to my own taste.

When I listen to “when the levee breaks” he exudes a rythm that exemplifies his theory on “light and shade” that entertains me more than listening to Clapton go off for a period of minutes or Via rail-gunning notes within a verse. Ease in playability aside, it’s songs like that which matter most to me.

I guess in a real simple sense I understand what Page is saying, and I connect with it.
Sure, different strokes for different folks. Im not gonna knock anyone for liking Page better than Vai, just as i wouldnt expect anyone to knock me for liking vai over Page.

I can never understand the guys that go on youtube and adamantly argue that mustaine is better than hammett, or that satch is better than vai, or vice versa. Sure there are certain aspects that you cant really deny that one guy may be better at, but at the end of the day personal preference dictates who you like better, regardless of skill, style, etc.

Page is a slop master. TSRTS live is what made me want to play guitar. Not Hendrix or anybody else. It was that sloppy, going-for-broke improv that made me start playing. Soloing aside, his riffs, tone and production were hugely influential on all rock music. He’s #1 for me, followed by Yngwie, for a million different reasons. Listen to YJM’s “Inspirations” and it will change your mind about him.
Ill have to look into that, cause i love the virtuosos, and i can even get in the mood for neo-classical stuff every now and then, but all the YJM im familiar with just sounds terrible to me. Very impressive technically, but not captivating to listen to at all. Maybe im just not exposed to enough of his stuff.

Plus he always came across as a huge douche when ive seen interviews and videos of him.
The Inspirations album is all covers he loved as a kid, Rush, DP, Rainbow, Kansas, ect. Loosely played and the recording isn’t sterile. My brother, who always hated YJM for being so technical and sterile converted over after listening to this album. And since Inspirations, he’s loosened up his playing a lot. And with Ripper Owens on vocals now, the last 2 albums are pretty cool.
He is a total douche in interviews, but if you can see him live…it’s a must. I’ve seen him 4x and my face hurts the next day because I was smiling all night long.

Ill definitely look into it then. Thats a good way to put it, the YJM stuff i have been exposed to does sound very sterile. I like technical stuff, but it still has to be captivating and inspired to make me want to listen to it.

If there is such a thing as actually best player? This guy in in contention. This little piece left me completely speechless. Just one cool tasty technique after another from blistering but melodic runs to these really fast slides and then that growling monster bend and right into a slide producing a sort of non-electronic wah effect. Really. Unreal.

I can’t tell if it’s just my machine, but the video won’t embed. If it’s like that on your end too grab the file from here.

This Guthrie dude is awesome, I think he owes a lot to Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather. Really, he’s like a nice mix of the two.

LOL!! I’ve been watchin a few more from him. I’m just now getting my jaw back up off my chest. I don’t know if anybody should be ALLOWED to get that good. He is flawless in every way. He’s got deep deep feel which he can deliver in blinding squeaky CLEAN speed, slow melodic parts and anything in between. Using a whole arsenal of techniques that just flow out of him right where they “shoud” be. He has truly mastered the instrument. WOW!

This explains a lot

Since you like Guthrie you should check out his books Creative Guitar 1 & 2.

I don’t play. I don’t even listen to music that much any more to be honest, but I do appreciate it.

How bout a 16 year old girl folks.

Replaced a burnt out transformer in the Hot Rod Deluxe III tonight. New tubes and rebiased.

Still have to replace an input jack, but I have to pull the whole board for that, so done for today.

Should be done soon! Gotta sell this to pay for the neck of the new guitar I’m building.

Got my Alesis monitors for Xmas - all set up and sounding badass with my Pod Farm - very psyched to be able to get awesome tones right into the PC. It’s nice to sit and practice at the computer now too. Also got strings, picks and a copy of Off The Rails that I’m really excited to read.

Just made a quick vid direct into the PC with the new Pod set-up.

This is a Brit J800 thru a 4x12 bottom w/celestions, mic’d with a shure SM57 off axis - tube screamer, gate, eq and reverb. I also have my Boss SD-1 and NS-2 pre input physical effects - obviously everything else is emulated

This is how my setup is too. I have 4 M audio speakers and run my GT-10 directly into the computer. I dont know that ill ever go back to using an amp honestly. (i dont play in a band)

I enjoy being able to use the preamp modeling capabilities of the GT-10 without an actual amplifier adding its own tonal qualities to it. I can get some sick rectifier tones lead tones.

I built this ceriatone 18 watt amp a few years ago. It has the ACDC tone I am looking for, short of buying a JTM45, which I’ve always wanted.

Nice tone, Demon… but it seems your timing is a bit off.

Those little 18w amps are monsters.

How did you like that kit? Good documentation?

Skynett makes me want to be a better man.

Yes, timing has always been an issue for me. Playing with a metronome helps somewhat. This riff has always eluded me though, I dont know why.

I like the kit a lot. It was a good experience. I cruised some forums for tips to build, but the documentation was decent. I was surprised at how simple the circuit was. I have JJ EL84s in there now, and I feel they are way better.
