And then, there’s PG. Still one of my all time faves. I sat in my room for hours and hours wearing out his first VHS instructional video. It actually broke and I had to splice it lol. Learned all my speed picking techniques from him on that tape.
This piece is incredible. So melodic and fiery, with chops to spare. I probably spoke with him for maybe only 10 minutes the time I met him, but it was really cool because there was no one in the whole store but me, him and the Ibanez rep…good times…
So for the record, I’ve read a lot about EVH’s Marshall heads. There has always been debate about modding and the tone. I read an interview with Ted Templeman and Don Landee, the producer and engineer for all those VH records before Sammy. The Marshall 100 Watt Plexi heads, '68, weren’t modded at all. He plugged them into a Variac to lower the ac voltage, which starves the plates in the power tubes resulting in a compressed and thicker tone, coupled with running all the controls at 10. That’s it. Confirmed by Eddie’s guitar tech. Also shortens the life of the power tubes a lot.

Yep - the variac thing is well known. That’s what I meant when I said “hot-rodded” Marshall heads - not “modded”.
I actually did have an old 1974 Marshall plexi head back in the day. There was a local guy here who did amp mods and I had him add an extra gain stage/pre-amp for about 200 bucks - sounded great, but I got rid of it many years ago. It’s great nowdays you can get so many different heads from diff companies and they all sound friggin killer. The shit we went thru back then getting tones…lol…
I’m amazed at this little POD I have that can dial up 100 different amp tones right into the PC - there are so many more options these days - I used to run thru a Tom Scholz Rockman into a Fostex cassette 4-track for recording back then! Ha…that thing did sound great though.

I almost brought this fine ass mama home with me tonight.
I played about 8 guitars tonight at GC (which I usually despise), but this… this I fell in love with instantly, even with the crappy ass “show room setup”.[/quote]
I’m curious Steely, did you get a chance to go into any TO guitar shops?

If yes, did you get sticker shock lol.

HA! No. Didn’t have time. I should be making several more trips over there so, maybe I’ll get a chance. I’d really like to catch some live music during the week when I’m there. I usually stay in the Bay/Dundas area, but I can walk as far as I need to.
Earlier this summer on the way back from the gym, I caught an outdoor concert in Dundas Square. That was pretty cool, but I imagine that goes on all summer.

I can build that strat I played for less than $500 with a Floyd Rose.

He’s said that he really didn’t understand the ‘why’ of why it worked, but got the result he wanted. That also spawned ‘the golden age’ for amp techs. Never had so much work fixing amps with people using Eddie’s “formula” …

I used to have a POD, sounded great, but really compressed, same with the J-Station. The tabletop blue Vox thingy with a 12AX7 in it sounds really close authentic. Well, maybe not authentic, but more “organic” if you can’t throw a 57 in front of a 4X12.
I have a '78 MKII 50 watt head that I had an extra gain stage and pre power amp effect loop put in. It’s pretty sweet.
A pic of me around '93 in Washington DC with my band Orca. We were signed to a small label out of N. Carolina and put out one record. On vinyl, no CD’s. Did some touring on the east coast, but went nowhere… I don’t know what happened to that Les Paul, lost it somewhere. Really. Still have a Gibson SG, An SG bass. A fender Strat, and a 1969 Gibson J 45 acoustic. Cool thread guys, rock on!

That is funny I used that rock man forever as a preamp great chorus.
I’m selling this body if anyone is interested in a project.
It’s a US Charvel Style 2 with 2 Seymours and a Floyd Rose. It is right off of the floor. The guy I bought it from took the neck and put it on another Charvel body. I got the body loaded (as seen).
It’s been sitting in the box, meticulously packaged for some months. Never been played, mint immaculate condition. Charvel gig bag and hang tags included.
The pics can’t do this thing justice. Flawless candy apple flake color. I’ll post a couple more pics.
It just needs a neck! US Charvel, Japan Charvel, Warmoth, or any standard 3rd party neck will do just fine!
This is a back in the 80â??s a cheesy band of me and my friends. The drummer Jon Dressel is actually Jimmy Kimmel Lives drummer. His brother played with Brian Setzer. We knew he was to good to be in our band. And that was when he was in 8th grade.
I know there is a large hate/jealousy club out there, but I’ve always had a crush on YJM. Not for speed, but for being ferocious with attack, vibrato and his hammer/pull and legato. Harmonic minor and diminished arpeggios…I love 'em!
