I do not believe in a spiritual God. I do not believe in a personal God. God is not my father or mother. God does not watch us or hear our prayers. God is not on our side…Or the other team’s side either! God does not control our destiny, cause disease and sickness, punish or reward us for what we do or fail to do. We as humans have tried to understand God by creating him/her in our own imperfect image. This is a fatal flaw that has caused exclusive religions to spring up through the ages, fostering warring cultures to fight, murder and kill in the name of their God.
There is something, call it what you will, that is greater than all our combined wisdom. The infinity of the universe. The movement of the planets. The energy of the sun. The force of nature. The power of love. The sound of music. The double helix of DNA. The laws of physics and mathematics. God is none of these and all of these.
I acknowledge the existence of a higher power, which is beyond my understanding.

Actually, his claims were pretty common. There were dozens of men who came and went, claiming to be the messiah.
Okay…name one.
And it’s still going on. Either those who claim to BE the messiah or have special extra-biblical revalations… Jim Jones, David Koresh, Mohammed, Joseph Smith… the list goes on and on.
Exactly how many healed cripples, returned sight to the blind and raised people from the dead?

ZAP, please!
This is an atheistic thread, you won’t convert one soul to the glory of your bearded god.
If you sincerely believe in Jesus C. as a historical figure as well as a Harry Potter-style healer you are truly beyond help.
True atheists always seem like they are putting on a little act.
And that act is nasty, hateful and very, very bitter.
There is no way of knowing if there is a higher power than us.
But Atheists know everything about it. Just ask one.
WTF? I consider myself an athiest, in that I believe that our universe is governed by physical laws, and that we can better ourselves through the study and understanding of those laws. How is that bitter? I am very comfortable with my position in the universe, and truly enjoy experiencing nature. I am a positive person, am very optimistic about the future of mankind, and try my best to live my life in a way that, if everyone lived exactly as I did, the world would be a better place.
Please note, no bitterness, and no claim to have all the answers.
You strike me as the bitter one Zeb, since you always seem so willing to write off people who don’t agree with you. Stop and think once in a while, and engage in meaningful conversations, and you just might learn something.
I can’t believe those intellectually challenged who deny God exists. If you havent seen a nuclear bomb, does it mean it doesnt exist?
Do you have any proof that shows God doesnt exist? On teh contrary there are many evidences that show God exists, namely, the intracacies of the universe and all the little signs of designs around us.
On evolution: some really famous guy commented: I used to think God was great as he made everything, now God has been shown to be even greater when he can make things make themselves.
People should really use their god given brains more
Vocal atheists embarrass me quite a bit, and I am convinced they are not true atheists, but people who are pissed off with God. (They prayed for a pony and didn’t get one.)

You fucks just can’t keep your heads out of this one huh?
Does it really fuckin kill you that sopme people think that God doesn’t exist, and they can talk about it amongst themselves?
Go to the Superchristian thread if you want to throw insults about we’re intellectually challenged. I think you just proved yourself pretty challenged with that stupid ass post
By classical definition I’m agnostic. I don’t believe in God yet I don’t feel there is definative proof of my beliefs. I accept the minute chance there can be a god though
What I stand against is organized religion; it’s the biggest load of shit ever. Relgion is a catalyst for wars and other atrocities and has been throughout every age known to man.
And how does the world decide what gods exist? Is it a matter of proof or faith? No, rather it’s a matter of guns. Just like the guy with the biggest dick gets the most girls (or some will claim), the religion with the biggest guns will have the most followers. If this statement wasn’t true then all of us here in America would be praying to the Aztec Sun God (the winning weapon in this case was disease) or maybe Zeus or maybe even an Egyptian Pharoah.
People should have started to recognize that prayer is not an effective tool to solve world or personal problems during the Bubonic Plague; it’s just a false security blanket to protect oneself from the chilling winds of anguish. Granted we all need a crutch sometimes but I prefer to face reality rather than to create a false one.
Amen.

I always remember that old saying, “If God be for us, who could be against us”
As I recall, Hitler prayed quite fervently for victory before battles, as I’m sure most Europeans did on both sides, in every war, ever.
I was reading a science text the other day about astronomy, and it really is impossible to try to comprehend this shit. When it describes the Big Bang, it is unbelievable that a trillionth of a billionith of a second after it, the universe was the size of a grapefruit. Its things like this that sway to believe that there is a God, things such as astronomy and the history of the universe
On the other hand, UFO’s were mentioned here somewhere.
If it came out that aliens existed, would that prove God didn’t exist?

Funny how my god given brain comes to the conclusion your god is a fraud.
If you want to hijack, name but one evidence, you joker.

Yeah right, superbrain.
Since you seem to have good reason to worship a 2500 year old Mesopotamian god who was once a female weather deity, why don’t you tell us more about your “intellectual” proof ?
You are… an atheist, though you probably already knew this. Also, you probably have several people praying daily for your soul. Instead of simply being “nonreligious,” atheists strongly believe in the lack of existence of a higher being, or God.
I like the bit about people praying for me; it’s so true. I got that on quite a few forums “You’ll be in my prayers…” Maybe that’s why I’ve got such a great life, 20-30 Christians praying for me daily.
I also wonder about Islam coming in second place. Going from suspecting there isn’t any God to kneeling 5 times a day and reciting the Koran for the Glory of Allah… hmmm. I think their script is buggy, as far as Islam goes. I’d put it down there next to Hinduism. Buddhism as a second choice would make much more sense, as there is little “divine” with that religion, and has teachings to which I could better relate.
This is a great topic. I never considered myself Atheist, Agnostic or whatever. All I know is that there is no special GOD type being. After reading the descriptions of an Atheist I guess I fall in that category.
We are born
We live
We Die
Thats it. Nothing special. Is it fucked up? yeah it sucks. If you disagree with this then go ahead and keep getting mind fucked at your local place of worship.
It makes me sick to think of the money and lives wasted on religion. Religion and belief is for the weak minded.
Do the religious types not fathom how big the universe is? I can understand because its almost impossible to imagine. There are other planets out there with the same proccess going on right now. Evolution…
Your telling me a higher being had control in all these other millions of galaxies. Thats a busy guy. I mean i thought my schedule was tight. Look at the details all around you in nature. Look at the complexity of the human body. no one can just make this shit up. Its taken earth billions of years to make it to this point. Ask bill gates, thats a lot of years. We have about another 5 billion to evolve and get off this planet before the sun goes out, if we want to continue living.
One thing i think sucks is never knowing what else could be out there. All the cool shit going on in the million other galaxies. Maybe there is another earthlike planet, just as beautiful and full of all kinds of life. I will be long dead and my life will have amounted to absolutely nothing in 5 billion years. 1/1 billianth of a second in the grand scheme of things.
Now seriously.
Jesus was a fundamental jew who only cared for the afterlife. He didn’t particularly enjoyed the presence of nonjews (to put it nicely) and speaking of itself as “son of god” was a normality in his sect. He certainly wasn’t crucified for proclaiming that. And he certainly wasn’t crucified.
Proof?
I would really like a reference to this? Especially since the right of burial was granted by a Roman to a Jew of stature. Which would bypass customs.
Excluding the super natural please explain to me what parts of the NT that you can prove of historically not correct.
Not at all.
I am not interested in the supernatural part at this point. I am just amazed at how say that Jesus wasn’t crucified as if it is a fact. I have never found any hardcore evidence that can prove that beyond a doubt.
Your approach reminds of me Achyra S or Daughtry with their claims of Jesus not existing.
Your entire claim on the Death of Christ is most certainly in the Minority as far as historical Scholars go.
Hamster wrote:
But what if you found 100,000 people claiming such a story? Could you discredit all of them as being liars, or not really being able to validate what they saw in the afterlife? I think there’s power in the sheer numbers.
The people are not necessarily lying. It’s often a matter of interpretation. Your beliefs influence how you’ll interpret a situation where information is incomplete.
Where as someone who believes in ghost or spirits might attribute a weird noise in the attic to “visitors” from some other world; a skeptic might consider the possibilities of materials creaking from changes in temperature and/or humidity. Or it could be rodents, whatever.
Even though they can’t both be right in their assessment, they can both be completely honest.
So while I’d tend to believe that people seeing “lights” and “tunnels” might simply be experiencing normal physiological processes, I can understand how someone expecting heaven and an afterlife might interpret those signs as being exactly that.
Even if you found 100,000 of them, it still wouldn’t be any proof of heaven or an afterlife.
Why do we need a label for not having faith? To call myself an athiest signifies the fact that there is a god that I happen to not beleive in. I refuse to let the bible thumpers label me an athiest. I don’t beleive in god becasue there is no god to beleive in thus I cannot be an athiest.
As far as my reasons for not beleiving, it is becasue I was never absolutely sure that it is possible for a god to exist. My only knowlege of god is what others have told me and what I have read in various stories, etc. In my mind “God” is nothing more than a literary character.
Why is it okay to believe (or worship) the “God” of the bible but if I were to worship the Greek or Roman gods I would be “Nuts”? Is not worshipng the “God” of the bible and the pantheistic gods of Ancient Greece and Rome the same thing? My knowlege of the two are from the same media–books.

King Herod had all boys under two years of age in Bethlehem and it’s surroundings killed.
Those kinds of massacres tend to be noted by historians. The problem here is that no historian, not even Josephus, who otherwise documented Herod’s life quite extensively, ever mentioned it taking place.
So, historically, there never was a massacre of infants at Bethlehem; only the NT mentions it.
