Here is the link to day two of squats straps down. Depth is still an issue. I didn’t realise how loud I was grunting because I had my ipod playing.
See the guy in the red behind me? Your welcome ![]()

People in the background made me LOL.
Technically you are spot on Jules, as always with squats. The depth will come to you. Remember, you only have to hit it once (well three times would be better, but you know what I mean).
I got some advice from someone DAMN GOOD (LOL) that stuck with me about depth issues: look and listen to your body for a cue, like how your belt digs in at depth, how your knees feels, back whatever, there is a cue that you have not connected fully with yet.
It’s good how you are filming each rep, review them in between sets and look for that one that is good; remember how your body felt and what was the sign that you were below parallel. This helped me a ton when squattin was sucking for me.
We are going to have to figure out when we can compete together again, I miss my roomie!
Grunting? LOL you are quiet as a mouse compared to me.

Good job on the squats. I have the same problem with the first rep or two, it seems like they suck no matter how much stretching I do. I love your background entertainment! I’m sure you will be whipped into shape Sunday if you are not hitting depth. (^:

I do actually have a pretty good feel for depth. However, with my previous stance, it was like I could lower my self to hit depth. With the wider stance, it’s more like I have to hammer my ass into the hole. That’s what I need to get a better feel for; how much speed and drive I need to have to hit the right spot. That’s also why I need to stay under heavy weight. When I get under a bar with an unaccustomed heavy weight, I get tentative. I can’t be tentative.
You wouldn’t consider doing the Provincials the beginning of October would you?
Also, I have taken your night before the meet training advice very seriously.
hahaha as you should!
I need to qualify though, and I have a small meet in Levis in October, probably right after Thanksgiving.
You are talking about finding that sweet spot, you’ll get it, just listen to what your body is telling you, of course changing your stance is a huge factor. Stay heavy and look for that ONE lift that is perfect and zone into it.
Be the squat LOL, fucking machine you.

What does sms mean? The guy in the black is a good guy. I watched him deadlift a bit when I was done and helped him with form. They guy in the read need a punch in the neck.
I will give you a foot massage and buy you dinner if you punch him in the neck.
I’m just sayin…
I love the other gym goers…
but your vids looked good.
nice work,
and joe is very slick.

I had private instruction today. The man in the video with me is one of the guys from the Niagara club who has helped me out immensely. He has listened to me yap about my lifts and watched my videos and given me a ton of feedback. We were at the Ottawa meet together. It wasn’t his best but he got a bench record and didn’t bomb out ![]()

Nice squats. Those looked really solid! A lot better than the 245 (?) the other day.
…so if 285 looked better than 245, then 325 should look perfect! That’s how it works right.

325??? I’m putting on 4 plates, walking it out and expecting angels to sing. Too bad the camera packed it in because the last ones were the best. I tightened my belt more. I’ve been playing around with tightness. The first few, it’s a bit looser and I pull it down in front like I do when I deadlift. The last few, Frank yoinked it tight enough that I may have peed a bit. Those ones were definitely better. Apparently I’m getting an single prong belt for my birthday.
I am in awe…you continue to inspire me greatly.

Is that what they are calling it these days, huh.

Monday July 27, Garage
Tonight’s workout sucked ass.
Warm up / mobility
Squat
45x2x10
95x5
135x2x5
165x3
195x1 - belt
225x3 - straps down
245x3 - straps down
265x3 - straps up/no wraps - The first rep was a 1/4 squat. The other two may have broke parallel but not by much.
265x2 - was supposed to be three but two was all I could manage
265x3 - deep enough but more like good mornings.
265x1 - the second rep hit the bars and didn’t come up again.
I didn’t use wraps and it may have been too heavy for no wraps multiple reps. I taped them and they were all ugly. I’m not sure whether it’s because 265 is too heavy or I’m bagged or both. Regardless, they sucked. I wasn’t sitting back into them. Several were good mornings. Blech. Pretty discouraging. Next week I’ll drop the weight a bit.
Bench
45x10
65x5
100x7x3
Rack Pulls
This week I did them conventional to give my hips a rest and pulled about and inch lower. Holy crap it was a lot harder. Again, I don’t know if it’s because I’m tired or it’s the change in position
225x3
265x4x2
265x1
I couldn’t even pull triples with 265. Last week I easily did 315 sumo for triples.
BB row
95x5x5

I wouldn’t even try to compare the two, they are really different lifts. The can compliment each other nicely, but they are not the same.
If you want a comparison, then wait until you do conventional rack pulls again and compare them to these.
As for the squats, it’s just a bad day/not recovered from the 285s a couple days earlier. You know that weight isn’t a problem for you, so just move on.
I have similar plans as you regarding the belt, only mine will be some gear as my only Christmas/birthday gifts for the foreseeable future. ![]()

Pardon my being blunt (not that you expect anything less), but why would you go straps up, no wraps? It seems almost counter-intuitive… you have to sit back into your suit with the straps up or you’ll just 1/4 squat and/or get tossed around…the wraps are there to spring you out of it. I would think without wraps one would squat a bit more hesitantly knowing they don’t have the wraps to help them out of the weak spot. Straps down/no wraps I can see but straps up just adds a totally different dimension…

It was something Hoi had recommended way back before nationals with respect to training conditioning with heavier weights. Sadly this was nothing like a conditioning session. Although, now that I give it some thought, he never specified whether it was straps up or down so I could have gotten the wrong end of stick.
The truth is, I was too freaking lazy to break out the wraps. Squatting already takes an hour or so without wraps. It was also hot and humid as hell in the garage. I had a more difficult time than usual just getting my suit on because I was so sweaty. It was dripping off my face into a little pool. Bleh. Next time I’ll suck it up and break out the wraps.
I think I was just way too tired last night. I’m still flattened this morning. I’m doing straps down again on Thursday but may drop the weight just to recover a bit.
I suppose the upside is that when I tried this type of squatting before nationals, I sucked with 205. Now I suck with 60 lbs more. I actually did better with 265 than I did with 205.
