maybe this is different for different types of gyms but i go to one of those typical 24 hour fitness gyms.
When your done using a machine, do you really got to get the squirt bottle thing clean up the seat/pads whatever? I always make sure to wipe up my sweat at least that’s got to be the most important part.
I mean its a gym: as long as im not gonna slide around or get my shirt wet with somebody else’s sweat i dont give a shit how clean it is. Thats what showers are for. Do you guys feel the same way or is gym hygiene really that important?
i see like women and even some guys even get off a machine bone dry, then spend a minuet cleaning up the equiptment with a towel and the spray bottle. then i come by soaking wet, finish up on a machine and dry it up with a paper towel for like 10 seconds. i dont know if i should feel bad about that or if somepeople just take cleaning the equiptment too seriously.
It’s more of an aesthetic concern than a practical one.
The dumbbell/machine handles are guaranteed to be FAR worse than the benches.
edit: to answer the question, I do it only if the following two requirements are met:
I leave a puddle of sweat
There’s a woman in close proximity
Otherwise, as long as I’m not laying in a puddle when I hop on a bench, I really do not care the slightest what other people do. Everyone else who regularly lifts in my time slot has the same mentality about that sort of thing.
I thought the squirt bottle was only for the gym staff, or if you made a mess like spilling a protein shake. I don’t sweat huge amounts but always have a towel so just wipe with that if needed. Most women don’t use the same stuff I do so cleaning up for them isn’t really an issue.
Personally I use a towel to make sure the bench is dry for the next user … I hate swimming in someone elses sweat so I’ll enforce the same courtesy from everyone else. But the disinfectant bottles are way over the top.
If you leave sweat on the machine, wipe it. If you don’t , there’s nothing to wipe.
Most gyms I go to have a paper towel dispenser and windex-like bottle around each section of the gym. It’s not to much of an inconvenience to clean up after yourself. My big bald head always leaves a big wet circle wherever it makes contact.
Sometimes I’ll tell the guy waiting for my bench “Hold up and I’ll wipe it down for ya.”. They usually object to this with a “Nah it’s OK brah.” I find this unusual. What? You don’t like clean benches?

I don’t care, I’m just gonna shower anyway when I finish. And, why wait (I know its only a few secs), but why wait?
I always wipe down the equipment wether or not I sweat a ton or not. (but I usually do) It’s just common courtesy. I clean it before and after. Wether or not you can see it people still leave behind dead skin and bacteria. I guess I just care about hygenine.
