Supreme Event of the Olympics?

The Special Olympics.

So we can show those snooty aliens that we not only covet elite athletes, but also those with disabilities who still kick ass in life.

Mens and Womens 100m. That to me IS the olympics.

Humans were designed to run were they not?

If these Canad…ahem, aliens were studying us, maybe they would say to themselves "these tiny little beings are built primarily to run, who’s the fastest down there?.

Not the strongest or the most gracefull, or the most durable.

If they are an ass kicking kind of alien race I’m going with the skeet shooting.

We MAY have been designed to run, but we are really piss poor at the 100m. That being said, I love the 100m and it is probably one the single most exciting events to watch, it’s just that as a species we suck at it. Almost everything with legs is faster than us. Flat out speed is not what makes us special.

We are elite distance runners relative to other species, so maybe DN is on to something with the whole marathon thing (boring as it is). We are, however, exceptionally good at building and using tools to kill stuff, so maybe you have a point with the whole shooting thing.

I am personally most impressed with decathletes/heptathletes, but that’s already been covered.

Diving.

Probably Gymnastics. Ive never done it and i have little interest in it, but to me it looks like one of the most impressive and difficult sports to be proficient at on the Olympic level.

10 events in one, yeh sure I agree but if it were just one event, which one would you pick?

Triathlon seems pretty reasonable considering it happens all in one go and I was also thinking Marathon - way to go DN! Ultra endurance events are hard to beat when it comes to pure physical strain and mental toughness.[/quote]

If I could narrow it down to just one event I would go with the 3,000M steeplechase. It’s grueling, requires endurance, strength and agility.

If you wanted to narrow it down to the event that requires the widest range of athletic talent, I would go with one of the gymnastic events, like the rings, the pummel horse or the the parallel bars.

Now, if it were the Winter Olympics, I would probably go with either the halfpipe for men’s snowboarding and both men’s and women’s alpine skiing, specifically the Super-G (super-giant slalom) and of course, the downhill event. I think the level of strength, agility and endurance is amazing in those athletes. I mean, the downhill event features insane speeds, extreme risk, it takes extreme strength to hold the body in a deep squat at speeds over 70mph for that long, the core strength required to stay tight while tucked and control the body and turns and while flying through the air for 100 feet is incredible, and the reflexes and reaction time of those skiers is second to none.

I would have to say that the ultimate Olympic sports, for both seasons, would be (in no particular order) Super-G and DH skiing, the 100M dash, the decathlon, the steeplechase, gymnastics and the snowboarding half pipe. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of those being the representation of the epitome of human athletic ability.

What about something like Water Polo, or the swimming 400IM?

Equestrian or trampoline.

As the Earth is covered with so much water, and humans evolved into land creatures, to impress an alien it would have to be any or all of the swimming events.

It would also show that humans still remain bound to their evolutionary roots, and to test ourselves we go back into the water from where we originated, and demonstrate that the top human athletes are those that still have the “old skills” to function best in water.

Decathlon, its the foundation of the Olympics.

Although I think wrestling is by far the best sport in there.

LOL at any one who says running. During any sport I played running was a punishment, here are a bunch of people who that’s all they do…

A 300lbs monster who could do backflips, full splits, and once carried a full size refrigerator up 8 stories – by himself. Oh, and could pick up and toss other unwilling 300lbs men.

Vs. A guy who can put one foot in front of the other.

Let’s not forget sports where one is physically pitted against another has a whole other dimension. Significantly more strategy, unpredictability, and psychology involved.

Umwut, we’re built to run? Horses, deer, elk, cheetahs, THEY are built to run. We’re just creative and have opposing thumbs, that’s all. Any physical feat we can do, there’s an animal that makes us look silly even trying to compete.

Well, no animal can play a fiddle like Charlie Daniels.

I’ll take the olympics seriously when they reinstate rugby union as an olympic sport (which would be a good example badassery for the Cana… I mean aliens). There are plenty of male and FEMALE rugby teams out there as well as a HUGE international fan base. They use the same size pitch as the football (soccer) event, so it’s not like it would be a major inconvenience.

I mean they’ve got BMX, synchronized swimming, MOUNTAIN BIKING (lol), hand ball, ping pong (fucking PING PONG!), trampoline, and in the winter they have CURLING! But no rugby? Give me a fucking break! Rugby is a far more international game than so many of these other “sports”.

Super-G is unreal but what about the biathlon. Cross country skiers are supposedly the fittest athletes on earth (VO2 max measure) yet while in full flight competition and coughing up a lung they manage to take rifle shots between heart beats! Srsly!

Judging by the participation levels in soccer at the olympics I’d say rugby might fair out the same. The UK only put up a team because they are the hosts. These boys are busy either playing national / internationally or recovering from games previous to the 2012 games.

Have you seen synchronised diving’ Jayzuz’ theres another clanger I cant get my head around… they should throw in hurling now thats a sport, shame we paddys are the only fuckers who play it!

Well we are ideally designed for walking long distances

Still plenty of animals that can and do cover longer distances in less time. My point is that our dominance over nature has nothing to do with physical ability, all about intelligence and skill.
