On September 12th I will be having surgery on my eye. It’s my first surgery ever as well as the first time I will ever be put under.
I’m a little nervous because it is my first and because I have been having crazy issues with my right eye for over a year now.
(I will create a separate thread in gal to talk about the incident)
For the sake of this thread the shortened summary is that I have an abrasion to my conjunctiva that didn’t heal properly, the doc is going to go in and cut out the scared part, sow it back together, sow some type of membrane to it(for healing purposes) and I’ll be on my way.
I’m curious as to what supplements I could get that would help with the healing process after the surgery or even before.
any and all information is greatly appreciated!
edit: I’m not just looking for supplements, but any and all remedies, sleep patterns, food to eat, etc.

Personally, I’d ditch training at least a full week before the surgery to make sure I’m walking in there 100% healthy, feeling good, and already recovered.
Eat well (no drastic dietary changes, but I wouldn’t want to try cutting/lower calories for the next few months). Think of getting a plain old “healthy diet”, not necessarily restricting nutrients (certainly not restricting protein and healthy fats. Get plenty of good quality sleep by using blackout curtains or similar, face alarm clocks away from the bed, and whatever other tips you can find about improving sleep quality.
The doc will probably tell you to avoid fish oil and vitamin E pre-surgery and for the next while after, to minimize any blood thinning effects. Glutamine can boost the immune system, so I’d start with 5 grams twice a day as soon as possible. You’ll probably have orders to minimize strain/blood pressure spikes for at least a few weeks, if not longer, after the surgery. So that would mean little to no lifting.

Other than that, good luck.[/quote]
Really no fish oil? damn I was gonna order some Flameout and stalk up pre surgery. Good to know. Thanks Chris.
Right now I’m looking at purchasing glutamine and some mineral support(i already have zma) and some vit c. and some vit d.
Ophthalmic surgeon here. Everything Mr Colucci said above is reasonable. And do let your surgeon know about any and all pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, etc, you’re currently taking. However, the long and short of it is, you need to ask all these questions of your surgeon at your pre-op visit. I can tell you this much–there is nothing in the ophthalmic literature regarding improved healing after conjunctiva surgery as a function of special diet, lifestyle modification, or ‘supps’ of any sort.
I’d wager your surgeon will not restrict your pre-surgery activity.
One more thing. You mentioned that this will be your first time being “put under.” As an aside, I doubt very much that the surgical plan includes GETA (general endotracheal anesthesia, ie, ‘being put under’). Except under very unusual circumstances, ocular-surface surgery is performed with the pt awake (albeit with IV anxiolytics and pain meds on board). Again, ask your surgeon about this at pre-op. Good luck.
Just eat clean and relax, let your body rest and recover.
Also, if you are really uneasy the day of the surgery, you can ask Dr. Feelgood (the anesthesiologist) for something to take the edge off before you go under. Don’t worry, it’s GOOOOOOOOOOD shit, it will relax you just right.
