SuperMan: Thoughts?

Terrible things about Smallville:

 1. A 30 year old dude playing a highschool kid? Come on son.

 2. Clark never learning how to fly even though they teased you with it almost every single season.

 3. The way Chloe talked. Seriously, no highschool kid in the history of the world talks like her. “Wall of weird” was so lame.

 4. Kryptonite turning vampires back into humans? Come on son!

With all of that being said I was a fan of the show back in the day but man was it annoying as could be.
I could never get through one episode. Didn’t feel right.
I watched a bunch of seasons on DVD on deployment. You’ll pretty much watch anything then lol.

It had so much potential and Clark would kinda turn bad ass for a minute but then would go back to Emo-Superman and turn into an uninteresting wimp.

The girls on the show (and Lex)were always the most interesting characters.

Lex made that show along with the guy who played his father. When they killed him off in Season 5 and got rid of Rosenbaum, I sort of lost the enthusiasm to catch all episodes.

yeah, some seasons flat out were written bad…like that whole Lana is a witch thing.

That plot line was pretty terrible lol.

Ya Clark’s dad was awesome. I met “Lana” up in Whistler 2 years ago… Used to have such a crush on her back in the day.

Christopher Nolan will be the saving grace of this film(and bringing redemption from previous Superman films).

All the Superman movies watched were fucking terrible. I was reluctant about this until I saw who is producing it. This could be good…
Not a big fan of Nolan. I think Tarentino should have directed all the Batman movies.
No way. Tarantino would do to superhero films, what Tim Burton would do to horror films.
I dont think that that is necessarily true.

Tarantino has respect for the source material.

It would be a coin toss, either awesome or craptastic.

Tarantino would direct a TURRIBLE superman movie.

The movie would start with Superman saving the world so we already knew the ending. Then it would flash back to superman being born. Then flash forward to superman not tipping his waitress. After that Superman would fight off 100 Asian assassins in retro suits and skinny ties. Everyone would be flying around on wires with an unrealistic amount of blood spraying everywhere. Then the cameo director appearance would be parlayed into Quentin playing Lex Luthor and showcasing some awful acting… Ughhh I can see it now.

I wont deny that that possibility exists.

In his defense I would add that if Superman ever went on a rampage, the amount of blood that would be “unrealistic” would probably have to be measured in metric tons.

^^true. I could get on board with that.

I wouldn’t want Tarantino to do any film that is not a unique creation of his. Only way this would work for a superhero movie is if it was a new superhero that he invented for that movie.

“The CW” tends to be interesting…

I think that many of it’s “successful” shows are very dependent on “followings”. When you have a strong fan base…sometimes TERRIBLE plot-lines are often tolerated, and don’t lead to a show being pulled.

Certainly you got the impression that “SmallVille” had run out of ideas some Seasons…but they finished pretty strong.

I read a story, fan made, about superman being infected with a plague that made ordinary humans turn into zombies and the likes of the joker were Meta infected.

Superman was this invincible walking death to the survivors and it was up to Batman to take him down.

Zombies followed Superman like a zerg because he could smell people and rip the shelters open like a can opener. Was very violent too.

Agree with you guys…

Tarantino isn’t the type of person (like Abrams) who can “reboot” a franchise.

First of all…SciFi isn’t the genre that appears to fascinate Tarantino…and like some of you have said…(and something that Tarantino has said himself)…ideas for projects come to him as original ideas.

Any “reboot” just wouldn’t work.

Mufasa

Yeah, I’d expect Tarantino’s Superman to end up hyper-comic booky, like Sin City meets Kill Bill meets Dusk 'Til Dawn. On the plus side, we’d end up with Samuel L. Jackson as Perry White, Christoph Waltz as Lex Luthor, and Zoe Bell as Supergirl. That, I could get interested in.

Not a reboot, but Kevin Smith’s Superman script (using the Doomsday/death of Superman storyline) seems like it could’ve be pretty great until Tim Burton came onboard and had it re-written.

(Vid from a few years ago. I’m not sure of Smith’s stance on the franchise today.)

In other Supes news, I just caught this short audio interview with Henry Cavill talking about what it’s like to have to make physical changes for roles:

Basically he says when you’re well-built, people treat you differently, and he found that useful when playing Superman and Theseus. Kinda cool that he acknowledges it.

Tarantino’s style is so deeply rooted in the '70s that he’d produce a comic book movie similar in tone to Joe Carnahan’s Daredevil test reel:

Give Tarantino a comic character created during his wheelhouse decade (Luke Cage/ Blade/ Bronze Tiger = blaxploitation; Ghost Rider/ Blade = horror; Shang Chi/ Iron Fist/ Bronze Tiger = kung fu boom) that reflects the zeitgeist and he’d produce something special.
Nards wrote:
I’m looking forward to it but my minor nitpick is that they took away his red underwear…I guess they thought it looked silly.

The thing is his whole outfit looks silly but we all got very used to it years ago so changing it too much (slightly different hues to the colors or textures to the material are OK) and you almost shoot yourself in the foot by drawing too much attention to it.
It’s not really a ‘costume’ this time around. Zod and Jor-El are wearing identical undersuits to Superman (same texture and design, only different colors). Based on that it looks to be a sort of Kryptonian armor given to him by Zod, a reminder of his heritage ( After Jor-El and Jonathan Kent, Zod is supposed to be a third paternal voice, like Nolan’s Batman had three father figures - Thomas Wayne, Alfred and Ducard. I think Zod will be a mentor/ antagonist similar to Ducard in BB. They should release a third trailer with a Zod v/o telling Kal-El to seize his destiny and crush the puny humans).

Beats slapping a family crest on a cheap lycra body stocking.

David S. Goyer said in a recent magazine article that Man of Steel will be a new spin on alien invasion movies:

“It struck me that if Superman really existed in the world, first of all this story would be a story about first contact…He’s an alien. You can easily imagine a scenario in which we’d be doing a film like E.T., as opposed to him running around in tights. If the world found out he existed, it would be the biggest thing that ever happened in human history”

Some very interesting possibilities there…

Hhahhahahhahhahahahahhaahhah

I get built in breaks with work, so its all good.

The more I watch the Superman trailer the more I think of 300 meets Tree of Life.

Without reading your initial post or any other post in this thread, all I can say about Superman, is that Vegita (and by default Goku) would whoop that Kryptonian ass. That is all.
