Superman...Metropolis-Sexual?

 1. All of you fuckers (meant in the nicest way possible) who get to see pre-screenings of the summer blockbusters suck!

 2. Superman wasn’t ever really one of my favorites, but it is dissapointing to find that they’re kind of making him look puny. Perhaps it’s to attract the gay community too? Word around the campfire is that Smallville has a pretty big gay following so maybe that’s why they picked a leaner version of Clark Kent. You know, so the gay guys will flock to the theater dressed in their Aquaman and Wonder-Twins outfits.

 3. The poster who stated that movies like X-men and Fantastic 4 has a good point concerning the right body type for the right role.

 4. Speaking of Fantastic 4. I saw the trailer and was pleased to see the bald guy from “The Shield” Michael Chiklis is his name I believe. I’m just hoping that the digital version of him plays better on the big screen than the Incredible Hulk did in '03.

GAINER

Am I the only one that hates Toby Mcguire? He’s like 102 pounds and is trying to play a superhero who can hurl cars at bad guys and propel jimself through the air like a champion gymnast.

I hate Toby Mcguire, and even worse, can’t think of anyone else better to play Spiderman.

And the movies were lame.
I thought he was a good choice. Peter Parker is supposed to be a dork.

He wears makeup and a costume to look like the Thing. It looks like they have limited the use of digital crap.

You can actually see his facial expressions while he is in costume. It looks cool.

While more of a Batman fan (and very much looking forward to the new film), the photo above is how I think of Superman. Now, I know it would be difficult to find someone who is a credible actor and THAT sized, but seriously… think of how many actors are willing to starve themselves for roles? If you have seen any photos of Christian Bale (who plays Batman in the new film) when he did the movie “The Machinist”, you’ll get my drift. Flat out anorexic… not even manorexic.

So they can’t find a guy willing to buff himself up 20-30 lbs in preparing for what could be a HUGE franchise role, chock full of sequels? The only explanation I can conceive of is that Hollywood looks on muscular actors as not being real actors (but apparently human scarecrows are somehow dedicated method actors).

Kuz

I remember an interview with Christopher Reeve where he said he wore a big bulky sweater to the audition since he didn’t think he was big enough, but they didn’t care about the size.

When you think about it, I’d rather see a good actor play the part than a big guy who is a lousy actor. I mean, I love Arnold, but he sucks at acting unless it’s a cyborg or barbarian.

And I think that’s not his real body right? The costume looked like it was padded to me. Not sure.

How does Bale look in the new Batman film? I hope he is huge. Batman needs to be a big strong guy. Would be even more impressive considering he had to gain 40 pounds to get back to his normal weight, and lets assume another 20-30 to look nice and muscular.

Don’t know. But hopefully, he isn’t any smaller or leaner than he was in American Psycho!

Besides, how the hell would superman attain hypertrophy, olympic lift train engines? Even that would be too light.
Answer #1: genetics. He just looks damn good, because Jor-El and Lara’s child was the result of careful genetic selection.

Answer #2: In the John Byrne re-vamp, Clark’s powers develop slowly, giving him time to be athletic and develop a good “base” of muscle before his adult years. Old days: Clark plays a weakling; new version: Clark is actually a decent high school athlete, pushing himself hard without “cheating” by having special powers.

I think there are thousands of people trying to become actors; I think a huge percentage must be male lifters of the right age bracket to play Clark Kent. I can’t imagine that none of them have acting talent. Is there really some huge Brandon Routh following that will cause people to flock to see this movie?

Someone wants to revive the Superman franchise, and they can’t put the effort into finding a lead that was put into finding a kid to play Harry Potter?

Sad.

Good thread, Prof.

Go to IFILM and check out the fan films of Grayson and Worlds Finest - they both have superman in it and i think he looks great - buffed up.
The other one watch is Batman Deadend - these fan films are sooo much better than many movie counterparts.
As a comic nerd i feel i must direct you to Countdown to Infinity Crisis and the omac project just to see Batman about to take out a lot of superheros after he gets mindwiped by the JLA!

He’s a pretty buff guy, not huge by T-Nation standards, but he’s definately believable. He definitely has a body I would aspire to, at least for now. It might just be me, but I think he’s been the best batman so far. To hell with Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton.

At first I had only seen head shots of Brandon Routh and wad going to give him the benefit of the doubt since Bryan Singer hand picked this guy. After seeing the pic, I have to say that I’m very surprised and disappointed. I was even thinking they would buff up the costume a little bit, but they didn’t even do that. So they got a pretty-boy that doesn’t even look like he works out. Superman is supposed to look strong. This is a joke.

It is surprising that they cast this guy considering that they had been pretty good about casting superheros lately. Although I agree that Hugh Jackman was too tall for Wolverine, Famke Jansen was told old for Jean Grey (compared to James Marsden at least) and Angela Basset should have been cast as Storm in stead of Halle Berry.

I believe, Mike O’Hearn played Superman in Worlds Finest. I’m not sure about his acting, but at least his build fit the part better.

Can’t Hollywood do any better? I have a hard time believing that this guy is such a great actor that we’ll forget that he’s barely athletic looking and they could have gotten someone bigger.

Oh well.

It is pretty sad when most pro-athletes are more muscular than the strongest man on Earth. I think Serena Williams is bigger than that.

I think the guy that played Colossus in X-2 would have been a much better choice.

howabout that GIANT sumbitch that got killed in the beginning of TROY. That was a big dude, I wonder if he can act?

Good pull, good pull indeed…

What about Betty Crocker Superman?

Hopefully, he’ll return for X-Men 3…I’d like to see more Colossus! He was one of my favorite X-Men. That short scene with him in X2 was sweet.

Unfortunately, Nathan Jones’ acting ability is limited to playing “Evil Henchman” type roles. People are so stunned by how big he is that they don’t actually realise that he can’t act. He is a truly huge dude.

Superman has always struck me as a bit, well, gay. Yes he is the strongest of the strong, the toughest of the tough, but he is so clean cut and wholesome that they should cover him in milk and sell him as a breakfast cereal. I always wanted him to just lose it and go all medieval on people’s ass.

Anyway, I think it’s a shame that DC still haven’t got their shit together, that Hollywood haven’t got their shit together, and that it’s the fans that are going to suffer. Again.

aaah. it’s frickn superman. he doesn’t have to be huge- he who can throw a 12 to 6 bender with the earth ! someone said it before: he’s an alien. only way he could get all hypered out is back home at k-nation. take spock for example. nobody ever said “hey that ain’t right spock being such a beanpole and throwin’ everybody around like that” cause he was a vulcan you know ? serena williams’d never even get past the vulcan nerve pinch, let alone the death grip. not to mention the mind meld…

I never thought that Reeves was that ripped to play “Superman”. Seemed more of a face guy to me.
