Stuff in the Newspaper

So I was looking through the newspaper the other day and they had a section that discussed some parts of this new book by someone named Dr. Nancy Snyderman. The one part that interested me the most was this,

"Truth: Popping a painkiller and lifting weights builds muscle in the quads.
In a three month study of adults aged 60-78, those who lifted weights regularly and took a daily dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen got substantially greater results than those who took a placebo.

The muscles of the medication users got 40-60 percent bigger and their strength also increased more than the non-users. The explanation: These pills triggered changes within the muscle that enhanced the metabolic response to resistance exercise, allowing the body to add more new protein to muscle."

Looks like we need to start popping some pills…

that’s the exact opposite of everything I’ve read.

NSAIDs specifically

not too mention acetaminophen is horrible for the liver, especially daily

Old men are NOT the same as young men. Artrithis, low grade inflammtion and so on and on, are all hampered by NSAIDs and a more effecient training response is achieved if you can depress some of these overactive pathways.

There have been numerous studies of NSAIDs inhibiting the inflammation that occurs post training in your muscles,… it is believed (by a good number of people) that this inflammation acts as a sort of signaling response for the body to recover/grow. Essentially, you should try NOT to make use of NSAIDs unless you absolutely have to.

S

I’d stay away from any pharmaceutical drugs promising fame, riches, or muscle growth. They haven’t done so well in the other areas of life.

Yea I had no intention of actually trying this I just thought it was interesting. She did have some good points though. Like if you eat after 8pm you do not always gain weight. It has to do with a caloric surplus if you are gaining weight. Which goes against everything opera has taught us lol…but yea the drug thing went against a lot of things I believed. Thanks for the responses
