I don’t get it… If you can’t gain weight at 4000 cal, bump it to 4500. If you don’t gain weight there, you think to yourself “well I guess I really can’t gain weight”? Bump it to 5000. If you’re still not gaining, go up to 6000…

Drink one or two high calorie shakes and you’ll have no problem upping the calories to an adequate level.
