Strong Little Snapper

Congratulations! That was really awesome.

Damn. Never notice how narrow your feet placement is on your deads. By the way great job.

Outstanding pulling Snap.

Try backing off the bar an inch or so, it may help to set your back. Not locking out the reps has more to do with your back than your “grip”. If your upper and mid back get loose then the grip suffers. You did olympic squats,…did you do cleans and snatches?

Great dedalifts. You do use a lot of nervous energy addressing the bar.

Good work, snapper. About the hesitation, I often do the same thing, and it’s not good. The more you think about it, the worse it gets.

True story: a few years ago, attended an Oly lifting meet. At one point, they set the bar and called the lifter, but he was talking to someone and didn’t hear. They called him again, still nothing. The clock was running out. Finally, they got his attention with less than 10 secs left. He sprinted to the bar, grabbed it, flung it overhead, and dropped it, all in one motion. Got white lights! I think about that every time I wonder how much you really need to prepare.

stylin’ and fast! sweet pulls - bet that felt good

FarmerBrett: The first two reps were quick. Then I kinda hit a wall. I cringe watching that third one.

LSU: Oly clean and jerk. Yes. I never learned the snatch because I have never trained anywhere that had bumper plates or permitted dropping the weights. Knowing that, I never missed a jerk. But I didn’t throw that much weight around. You advise backing off the bar on DL because you think I set up too close?

Harry and Cavalier: Yeah, my nervous setup is a waste of energy. I’ll break myself of that ridiculous flapping habit soon. I need to just jump up and down a few times, approach the bar, and pull it. Interestingly, I only do that flap-stalling on my heavy set(s).

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone.

yeah, nice pulls. i laughed a bit at your faffing around beforehand, too. my deadlifting song (which i’m pretty sure nobody would appreciate but me) doesn’t allow me to dealift until 1.10. thats what i tell myself, anyway…

Dang girl that is some awesome pulling! So what if the last rep wasn’t a thing of beauty. You just pulled twice your bodyweight for a triple! Freaking awesome stuff right there.

Isn’t it cool that at an “age” when most people are growing couch fabric patterns in their butt cheeks, we are still getting better? I swear wightlifting is the fountain of youth.

Setting up for conventional can be just as unique as any other aspect of lifting. It really depends on how you are built. Many conventional pullers start out about an inch or so from the bar, get the grip, flatten their back, then rotate the shoulders to roll th bar closer. Then when the hips are in the right spot, the start the pull.

For example, the way I am built, if I try to start my pull against my shins, I will never be able to set my back properly. So, I start my set up about an inch away, flatten my back, then as I set my shoulders down, the bar gets closer, and then when I feel my hips are in the right spot, I start the pull.

Its can be a way to cut out some of the rounding, because you arent trying to go from rounded, to flat in one motion, which can be impossible with a suit. You will start flat, then lower your hips.

Lots to think about, LSU. Lemme know when you’re in the area so you can show me in person.

I’ve actually rewritten (again!) my DL plan for the next six weeks leading up to my meet where I’ll work up to a progressively heavy single each week and then drop the weight to 95% for a triple. My hope is to pull 254 lb. (2.3x bodyweight) at the meet. Might be reaching there. But why not? You only live once.

Humbling gym day today doing rotator cuff stuff. Found that indeed my external rotation strength (infraspinatus work) is nonexistent. I can’t even externally rotate when pulling an unloaded cable. Pathetic and very odd. But it will get better.

I did a few cleans with the empty bar today for the first time in a good long time. It’s all this Oly lifting talk that makes me want to get back to it. I must say, it was a bit tricky. Very shoulder intensive. I could power clean the bar followed by a front squat, but then I experienced pain when releasing the bar back to the start position. So I just did a handful of reps. Maybe someday.

definately someday!

i never thought about setting up with the bar a bit forwards and having it come back towards you when you set your shoulders / back… i know that i’m not very good at setting my upper back / shoulders properly on any kind of pulling… maybe it is partly because i don’t give myself room to do it. going to try this.

Just play it smart on the shoulder.

Yea for cleans.

I had a humbling gym day today too. Only mine was attributable to last night’s wine consumption.

Today’s training: squat. Felt slow and sluggish. But I did the required reps.

Squat
5/45
4/95
3/120
2/130 belt
1/140 belt, wraps
3/160 belt, wraps, suit straps down
3/165
3/170

Sumo DL
5/115
5/135
2/5/160
4/175

Hadn’t filmed these in a long time and was disappointed to see how high my hips are.

Not sure how to combat this problem. The 160 felt light, so I upped the weight but stopped after the fourth rep of the 175 set because my hips were high.

GMs
5/45
3/5/75

Lying Hammie
3/8/90

Standing Calf
3/8/255

I’d have slapped you on the ass too, squatting 170 for 3 so pretty like that.

Wish I could make a sumo suggestion, but I’m fighting my own demons with that lift and have nothing.

Your squat is good and low, great work. Seems to be a little hesitation stepping up to the bar, did I see that right? Looks like you got into position fine, just remember to push straight up.

NICE DEEP SQUATS! A virtual ass slap from the mathineer!

Nice deadlies, too. I didn’t think your hips were that high. Your thighs were above parallel, but it looked to me like you were initiating with the legs, not lifting with the back. Not that I know what I’m talking about…
