Again late to the party but floor presses seem to destroy my tris in a good way.
If i remember correctly, the part of bench where the bar hits your chest to where your elbows come in line with your body involves a lot of your lats, and that from there up involves a lot of your triceps.
board presses are good accessory work for those who fail above parallel and have trouble locking out.
Board presses are high on the list of “things I would love to be doing if my University gym wasn’t geared towards little boys who curl and the girls who somewhat love them”
So glad to hear the ART seems to be helping your squat! And nice benching too! Some good sleep makes such a difference, eh?
Masch, thank you for picking a vid with such a cutie - love the accent and tummy too.
I’ve also been doing my floor press with knees bent and feet flat on floor. I’ll have to give them a try with my legs extended. I also normally do them with a neutral grip, which makes them even easier on the shoulders.
I think for a raw lifter the floor press has better carryover than board pressing, particularly if you pause with elbows on the floor for a 3 count. That pause, staying tight and subsequent force generation positively affects a full range bench. The thicker your torso, the more this is the case. I also like the support the floor gives the shoulders, which you rarely find in benches where the shoulder joint is usually hanging off the bench. The lack of a back arch also makes it a very challenging, strength-developing movement.
Kimba - keeping an open mind about trying new things is what allows us to progress (feet stance and plates). Glad to see you are willing to switch things up and around with the added bonus that they have been good for.
Glad the ART is going well. It has helped me as well though I wish I could get it done more often. Likelihood is I’ll have to drop it if I lose my job - hope that’s not the case. It does wonders.
Had another ART session this morning. I’m definitely not getting wiped out from them anymore. But today its tough to tell because my quads, hammies and glutes are sore from yesterday’s training plus the two hour bicycle ride that was my evening relaxation. Ouch.
Next week the ART sessions drop down to 1 x per week. Too bad (except for cost) because I really enjoy them.
Don’t be fooled, Mr. Albino is not a crappy bencher and Joe Warrior wouldn’t be calling a cab.
N., I really enjoy learning new things and trying experiments.
When I look back in my notebook log, the earliest entry is June 5, 2009. The workout was deadlifts maxing out at 110 lbs., band assisted chins because I couldn’t do any unassisted, and band assisted triceps dips because I couldn’t do any unassisted.

That’s alot of progress in eleven months.
that is a ton of progress in 11 months; awesome girl! I keep a log and love to go back and look; I think sometimes we are so busy trying to do more and do it better that we forget where we started. Good for you!
yeppers, Kimba. the one thing i have said over and over about you and your training…stupendous progress in a such a short time. your consistency rules!
even if i had enough time for a 2 hour ride in the evening-i might wear out. nice work on top of training!
I’m sorry, I’m a few pages behind so you may have covered it, but how do you curl your toes and still drive through your heels? Isn’t that an important part to not falling over with OH squats?
God I love this place. Both for the kind words and the flood of new training ideas that flow through here. If it weren’t for PW, I might still be doing the WW workouts from the other side.
pch, my ART exercise is to do overhead squats with just a broomstick to a parallel box. So the falling over isn’t a problem for purposes of the exercise. And, I am not strong enough to get even an unloaded oly bar overhead for a squat, so I can’t comment on how a toe curl would affect a REAL OH squat.
I can, however, comment on toe curl affecting heel drive on a regular squat. Indeed, as the weight gets heavier, I’m unable to hold a foot arch as well. But I haven’t had any problems with heel drive with this new foot position. In fact, all this focus on my feet makes me think more about heel drive and I probably do a better job with it.
