Man, lot of good stuff over here. Mucho impressed with your ‘lifting with your head’ Kimba! And really loving those weighted dips, the folx at my gym tend to stare when I do them. Kinda gets on the nerves, but I just use it to push harder…anyhow, props to the mighty CBear for her wisdom 'bout the ‘oh yes one can F-up a deload!’ Can’t wait to see what happens next…
So, the bad-asses that can out-squat, out-deadlift and out-bench me think my dips are the shit? I am all puffed up with pride over here.
Maschy, go ahead and have your moment. So amusing when you do it. I’m not gonna tell you to deload if you don’t want to. Only Mascherano-body can convince Mascherano-mind to allow a deload.
CD, I’m sure people do stare at your weighted dips. I’d stare, especially since I’ve never seen anyone else weight dips in person. Trust me, I am a spectacle for my gym-goers when I yank out my dip belt and plates.
Today was a rest day. Tomorrow I go back to the ART lady. I’m looking forward to it!
I think your dips are totally the shit. I want vids.

Yes! Vids of awesome weighted dips, please. ![]()
Cbear is right, I have a tendency to get about half way through a deload and then max out on rack pulls or something else utterly bizarre like doing an hour of sled dragging.
I am a video-whore, as you know. But I’m not sure I have the cojones to video myself dipping when the dip station is prominently displayed in the machine room where all the cardio bunnies and Nautilus-circuit folks stare me down enough as it is.
I’ll think on it.
You own the place, might as well videotape. And don’t let anyone tell you different.
^ That.

I haven’t been on here in a while; but I am back and wanted to give my two cents…
If you are proud of your work and want to share, I think you should do it…in 2 minutes it will be over and you will have a record of your hard work
I get the staredowns too; most cardio bunnies prefer that I not grunt or make lots of noise but I do anyway…lol you work hard so you deserve to share and brag a little.
Yep.
I see there are many votes in favor of moar exhibitionism. ![]()
So. ART. Yup, that is painful, but I’ve been through worse and have a high, high pain threshold. What hurt most was the peroneals on my right outer calf and some unnamed muscle right above my right inner ankle. Ouch. But all of this hurt in a very good way. I’m a bit sore right at the moment.
The therapy is to deal with my dysfunctional right side, which is putting all the load on my left side. I walk on the outside of my right foot with that foot turned out, which is screwing up my whole leg. Now that its been pointed out to me, I notice that I do, but CAN’T STOP! Right after the treatment, I went grocery shopping and noticed I was walking a bit straighter on my right foot. So, YEAH!
Thus far the remedial exercises are:
-
Overhead squats (with broomstick) to a parallel box, with feet at shoulder width pointed straight forward, toes curled down to arch my foot thus activating muscles to keep my right knee from caving.
-
One legged balances with foot straight on a wobble board tilted down at 6 o’clock, 12 o’clock, 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock respectively. The progression is to be able to do these with my foot pointing inwards.
-
Kneeling hip flexor stretch position, then rotating hips side to side then in circles, then rotating front foot side to side and in circles.
I can use all of these during my mobility warmups before lifting. And I am to stop foam rolling from my hip to my knee during treatment.
All in all, I’m hopeful.
Edited to add: For some reason, when I got home from ART I had an INTENSE craving for starchy carbs (three or four slices of sprouted wheat cinnamon raisin bread to be precise). I almost never get this way except after lifting. And I sort of feel like a truck hit me…so tired.
Wow Kimba, thank you so much for sharing! So interesting about the carbs. And the exercises are going to be a really great addition to the warmup.
I also think its interesting that you feel so tired - and not in a bad way! And that you are to stop from foam rolling. So this is definitely some strengthening work.
Have you ever tried acupuncture? I know this sounds crazy, but this might compliment the ART really well.
I am always in favor of moar exhibitionism. I’m looking forward to seeing how ART helps you. If its a big help I might have to drive to Atlanta to get worked on.
Yeah, my calves are always excrutiating. I’m worried I’m going to kick her in the face one of these days.
Glad you found it useful, though. It does help.
Maschy, I have tried acupuncture before but for insomnia (many years ago when that was a HUGE problem for me). It didn’t help for that, so I wasn’t left with a particularly positive impression.
Joe, I am happy to be your guinea pig.
Cal, my first session went awesome. I’m going again tomorrow.
Today’s training was a good time. Nothing really hurt me (yay!) and I felt pretty good on top of that. Great sleep makes an enormous difference.
5/3/1 “Off the Reservation” Day
Squats (to 3 risers plus step)
Bar 1 x 5
75# 1 x 5
105# 1 x 5 <–knee cave was much improved and I felt pretty strong on these
115# 1 x 5 <–knee cave present, but I got all the reps up
65# 1 x 15
I’ve changed my stance to have my feet pointing more forward and curling my toes down to arch my feet, per the ART lady’s suggestion. Honestly, I didn’t think this would work but I actually felt stronger today than in many, many days. So I’m keeping with it.
Bench Press
Bar 1 x 5
65# 1 x 5
75# 1 x 7 <–failed on 8
65# 2 x 10
Bench isn’t moving forward, but I’m not too stressed. I train it, but don’t love this lift.
Walking lunges
20s 69 steps
Bench dips
BW 1 x 40
Got an enormous pump in my triceps after this. They were HYUGE.
Shoulder press/biceps curls
15s 1 x 10
Planks and side planks for about 2 min. each (front of body elevated)
And that was that. Apparently I can recover from the ART attack in one day, but could NEVER lift right after getting ART.
thanks a ton Kimba for sharing the ART remediation exercises. you are fortunate to have found someone to work on you and i’m excited to see how it works. (especially if you share some of those exercises)
i was going to ask about your insominia but i don’t know if that’s treading in personal information waters…
interesting about the carb craving after the ART-i’m sure you flushed with a ton of water. i’ve heard lime water works well in this situation. (yeah hi bear) i’m not surprised about the feeling hit by a truck after-that’s close to how i am after my MT (i have no idea if it’s “ART” she’s doing-it is harcore deep tissue work and myofascial release whatever stuff)
i like accupucture for pinched nerve stuff. i once went for a severe sinus headache i had. she bled my temples and it looked like i had hickeys on the side of my head afterwards. meh…
yaaay for hyuge triceps!! ![]()
T, I am fortunate to have an ART practitioner near me. Whether or not this therapy actually improves me is yet to be seen. I’m cynical and suspicious girl. Times 10. But I am hopeful, and am of course willing to follow the program absolutely 100%. Cause that’s how I roll. No paying good money for professional advice and then not following it.
No worries on the insomnia question. I suffered really badly from it for about seven years. Then I sought treatment in the form of behavioral modification therapy and improved my sleep situation radically. These days I only get the sleepless for a few-day period every couple of months or so. Quite manageable. My doc wrote a book detailing his treatment, and if anyone wants the particulars, just PM me.
I’m happy to write about my ART experiences if folks find it interesting and helpful. I sure would’ve liked to have known more about it before starting in myself.
Well as always, it’s a great read over here…
Not surprised to hear about the carb craving…ART can ‘stress’ the system as much as an intense training session, so yeah…it can make one hungry. I had the same revelation with the calves when I’ve had ART as well…apparently it has something to do the fact that they are some of the most dense muscles in the body, that’s what she told me and like yourself, when paying for professional advice…I take it!
Now about that video of your dips…hmmmm, sounds real nice. I vote YES! So, you carry your own belt too. Man, I guess it’s like they say…“All the good ones are already taken.”
Pretty interesting advice on the toe curl…I may have to experiment with that…Thanks for the info./feedback.

Could it be that the toe curl is analogous to the advice to “squeeze the bar” on the bench or even squat? Activates more of the muscles and nervous system? As well as arching the foot.
gotta love a triceps pump!
Great to hear that you got such a great training session in after seeing your ART practitioner and implementing some of her suggestions for your squat! I hope things continue improving for you.
Also, it’s interesting to hear about the ART in general - I actually don’t know much about it, and would love to hear more about your experience.
