He developed the GUI operating system, most of what you see in front of you is a result of him. To put this into simple terms you can understand, he made computers user-friendly so the average person could use them without needing a computer science degree. What you don’t realize is this innovation has indirectly helped feed the poor, fight poverty and education millions of people.
To put this into simple terms you can understand: you’re fucking wrong. Jobs didn’t develop the GUI operating system.

I don’t feel sad for people I don’t know but I wish him the best.
No I am not. I didn’t say they Invented it. Xerox invented the product, but failed to do anything with it. They were ready to give up on it.

Steve Jobs and Apple were the first to DEVELOP a GUI product that anyone actually cared about.
But you didn’t say he developed A GUI. You said he developed THE GUI. It’s like saying: Ford created THE car vs. Ford created A car.

It’s also presumptuous to assume we’d all be hacking away on command line PDP-11 terminals if it weren’t for Steve Jobs’ magical GUI operating system.
It seems like you’re just splitting hairs over my wording. I thought what I was saying was clear enough when I used the term developed and NOT invented. Either way what I said still stands, he and Woz are responsible for most what you see in front of you not Xerox.

To your second point, you could say that about practically almost any important invention over the course of history. What would be the state of our communication be had Alexander Graham Bell not invented the telephone? Just give credit where credit is due, in this case to Jobs for the modern day GUI.

Though he was pretty much a reprehensible man in some of his personal life. Though he seems to have changed in his later years. I think the cult of apple is a bit much and you can see Gibson making mock of it in a lot of his later fiction.

i have no idea who this is

He’s a rich dude that went to court to claim he was infertile so that he wouldn’t have to support his daughter. Not sure why so many people are idolizing him.

“Rot in Hell [Steve Jobs]”

Fuck. Why am I not even surprised anymore to read something like this on T-Nation? About as classy as an unwashed piss-trough at a tractor-pull event.

Should Steve be lauded to the same extent as an “everyday hero”, charitable director or agent of positive change? No, he shouldn’t. Should he be remembered as an innovative, brilliant individual with huge dreams and enough balls to achieve them…one who never understood the meaning of “stagnation” and continued to push the envelope in every facet of his life, and who created some of the most cutting-edge, high quality products in his field? Absolutely.

RIP Steve. My 2005 IMac and 2006 IPod both commend you for engineering them well-enough that they still work perfectly today.

And it probably holds some value on the market still. I sold my 4 1/2 year old Powerbook in 2008 for $650 US.

Absolutely disgusting.

Guy with a physique better than 90% of posters here dies?
LOL he deserved it! He was skinny! What a shit physique!

Guy who starts an empire that successfully strips hipsters of their money?
LOL who cares! I hate Apple anyway lol!11
What a bunch of bullshit. The only reason you guys are haranguing me is because I’m right and it’s forced you to consider the possibility of a complete paradigm shift in the way you view morality and “accomplishments”. It’s totally classless for me to slam Jobs so close to his death.

I admit it, and for whoever here thinks I’m only trying to mask my own insecurities, fuck off. I’m well aware of them, I’m well aware that I come off as a complete fucking idiot in this thread. But I’m right. And you mask this from yourself by focusing in on my obvious lack of respect for the dead. But go on, continue to ignore reality.

Whether you own or use an Apple product – the man did what no one before him did – he commercialized the PC, heck he invented the term Personal Computer. He also knew well when to work with competitors (he needed Microsoft). And he took risks and failed. Without that failure the huge commercial successes would never have happened.

I do agree, some of the stuff on Fox & CNN has been a little ridiculous about him. He wasn’t a saint, not even close. The very best obit I’ve seen so far is in Mercury – they don’t mince words, he was a bear to work for:

If I dared to dream, take risks, and not be afraid of failure even a 10th as much when training, in my relationships, and my business – I’d probably be wildly more successful.

The lesson isn’t about buying more stuff, its about dreaming, trying, losing, & winning.

I’m so sick of looking at teenagers walk into my classroom with their heads buried in an iWhatever who have never heard of Libya, couldn’t find Iraq or Afghanistan on a map and have no fucking clue who the 2nd President of this country was. Fuck Steve Jobs. Thanks for your contributions to the dumbing down and rampant materialism going on in this country you fucking asshole. Burn in hell.
Except for people who actually use the term “e-peen”. Nice cankles buddy.
Really? hahaha. “Nice cankles buddy?”

Your wit is out of this world.

Don’t be so modest not just this thread.

I’m reading the article on wired.com.

I think every complimentary over the top adjective has been used already and I just finished page one. Some serious ball kissing going on.

I guess when the techies have to write about something like this they revert back to grade six composition?

“Steve Jobs was a very very really important person, in reality…”

Successful and revolutionary, yes… But people are WAAYYY too much in love with the fact that they own the actual products, not necessarily with their actual usefulness (though not just apple). I fucking dumped my gf because of that obsession, and I don’t even live in the states.

I’m working on being more humble. I thought it was a little too pretentious to point out that I come across as a complete idiot in most threads.

And before anyone accuses me of unjustifiably getting on my high horse, I really DO help with this sort of thing, okay? So I my stance isn’t one of hypocrisy. I volunteer at soup kitchens, I donate my time on the weekends and once a week in the evenings taking care of a 90 year-old woman because no one else will, I volunteer time as a mentor to young teenaged foster children, I’ve practically taken a vow of poverty to work as a teacher in a public school. And it isn’t because I want summers off.
This is the same mentality as “I’m not a racist, I HAVE BLACK FRIENDS, so I am qualified in saying stupid shit on the subject”

You have such a nurturing personallity, I bet you’re as hardcore of a liberal as they come, I also bet you fucking lactate quarts of estrogen filled breast milk a day

you write, serve soup, read books to kids, and scrub corns on old ladies feet, yea you’re a real fucking HERO this world could not possibly survive without you. Do you ever realize how fucking EASY it is to do the things that you do? I mean liberal arts-cereal box degree-dreams of adolescent girls type shit

If you didn’t do these things some other bitch would.
It’s not at all the same thing.

Not that I think Job’s should be shit on, but it really is everyday hero’s that make a difference. I am willing to bet that while you talk about how easy it is to give your time helping others, you don’t give anything. Self absorbed twats like you are exactly who he is talking about.
ah, just the type of imbecile I was looking for!

It’s fucktards like you who can’t think past the tip of your nose who gravitate towards appreciating the here and the now, but have no concept of the functions that make this world go round.

Why would I waste my valuable time changing diapers and babysitting kids when my intellect is better spent on solving real problems in this world that will ultimately provide a better tomorrow?
