DB, sorta off topic but wanted to ask: If you’re all about helping the needy and educating youth, why are you a Libertarian? Theoretically, shouldn’t you be for a larger government that provides a substantial safety net for those who need it?

I’m glad you asked that. I’m a Libertarian because I believe in personal autonomy and freedom and the free market. I don’t believe that the govt should be the one taking care of the poor and unfortunate. But someone has to help in this respect, so I do it. I have principles, and you all can say whatever you want about them, but at least I live by them. You’ve read all my rants at WestCoast about his idolization of Barry Bonds in the MLB thread so you know where I’m coming from in this respect.
That being said, I’m not really a hardcore Libertarian. I don’t believe in getting rid of the federal income tax entirely. I don’t believe in absolute personal freedom. I don’t believe in legalizing all drugs. I don’t believe in getting rid of govt bureaucracies like the FDA or the EPA.

Maybe you missed the part about “not really a hardcore Libertarian”. Nowhere in the Constitution am I granted the right to use drugs. The legislative history of this country clearly suggests that it isn’t a fundamental right. So I believe it’s up to the states to decide for themselves whether they want to legalize because keeping drugs illegal simply isn’t a violation of any fundamental right that I have. For all you idiots out there who call me a “liberal”, how you like them apples? My view on the application of the Constitution to our personal lives is the epitome of conservatism. I don’t support substantive due process in most cases before the Supreme Court either.
The only argument I’ve heard for legalization that’s really gained any traction in this country is to legalize weed for the possible tax revenues. I’ve expounded on this subject in great detail in the past on here. But for now, I’ll be succinct.
You see, it’s an utter fallacy that legalization of weed would lead to tax revenues and profits for the state. The Board of Equalization in California produced a study in conjunction with AB 390, which turned into Prop. 13 on the ballot last year. The study showed that the state could potentially lose up $15.5 billion if weed was legal. Not only that, the language of the bill itself made it virtually impossible for the govt to collect taxes on most of the people growing and consuming weed, because it would have enabled anyone to grow within a 25 sq. ft. space. How is the govt going to collect taxes from me if I grow weed and don’t report it? And how many people are going to pay inflated prices at cannabis clubs, who have to maintain high prices to pay their $50 per ounce tax, when they could just legally grow it on their own?
So I don’t support legalization for this reason. And that is VERY Libertarian. I don’t see anything libertarian about the govt regulating and taxing a product. If they were to just legalize drugs and forget about them, I’d be fine with that. But it’ll never happen that way, so I stand firmly against any legalization effort that will lead to govt regulation and taxation, especially when it’s dubious at best that any revenue will be made in the first place.

I know this is a small point in very fucked up thread, but the Constitution doesn’t grant you any rights. It delineates (limits) what the Federal Government can do and how much it can trample your ‘inalienable’ (natural) rights (the ones granted from the Creator-- you know, from that other document).
In fact ‘weed’ was quite legal until certain lobbies successfully got prohibition laws passed against it.
But, I digress. If you’ll excuse me now, it’s my turn on Scrabble on the iPod.
