Texas method/couple runs of madcow5x5 then 531
Not a fan of SS?
Nope. Its fine for 6-8 weeks but that about it. Texas method gets better feedback here 90% of the time even for rank beginners
So should I run SS for 5-6- weeks first or don’t even bother? I don’t think I’d stall- i am (very) weak atm
Edit: Isn’t faster lp for 5-6- weeks better than slower lp for 5-6 weeks? (yes texas will be run longer, but just in the timeframe where SS would/could be run)
I think the consensus on this forum is that SS is a alright program, but there are better ones (I. E. Texas method like badger said) the section about how to have proper form on the main lifts is pretty much the best part in starting strength.
WS4SB is the greatest beginner program of all time. OF ALL TIME!
That’s a pretty bold statement ya got there
Lol, I’m sure it’ll rustle some jimmies lol.
Beginner gains and linear progress are Ripplestiltskin fairy tales.
Go with 5/3/1. Hit “Rep Maxes.” Don’t go to failure, don’t dump any lifts, or get crushed under any barbells.
Lift the weights Wendler tells you to lift. Lift them forcefully and violently. Focus on getting stronger and more powerful so YOU progress more rapidly that the weights go up.
Eat and SS 3 x 5. I’ve been making progress at an incredible rate, today I PRd at 3 x 5 x 225 for back squats and 1 x 5 x 275 for DL’s. 5/3/1 is more intermediate-level programming.
You say this because…?
@strongmangoals Because it progresses at a much slower rate than SS LP. Even if you’re adding 2.5 lbs per workout to lower-body lifts, it still beats going up by 5 or 10 lbs a month. And if you use proper form, you won’t end up crushed under any barbells. SS doesn’t start you off heavy. I couldn’t squat my own bodyweight when I started SL 5x5. I made some halfway decent gains on that, and then I switched to SS 3x5 and packed 20 pounds onto my squat max in just under 2 weeks.
I can deadlift 265 now, with no progressive overload @ 125
Also- it doesn’t. TM has no relation with 1RM. If you add 10 lbs a month to your TM, doesn’t mean that you only gained 10 lbs on your squat
Oh. I was under the impression that on 5/3/1 each month you add 5 or 10 pounds to your 1RM for any given exercise, and then recalculate your working weights. Congrats on that DL, by the way.
Thanks. It’s nothing special though. And you add 5/10 lbs to your TM
TM (from my understanding) or training max, is anywhere from 90% (og 5/3/1, etc) to 80% of your 1RM, at least when you start a new program
When would I stop texas method and to go 5/3/1 @RampantBadger ?
You’re welcome. Best of luck to you. Also, if you decide to run SS, I highly recommend reading SS: 3rd Edition. If you want, I can email you a PDF.
That is how fast the TM progresses. Not the trainee.
Huh. So 5/3/1 produces increases in squat, bench, press and DL 1RMs at the optimal level for a novice, as compared to SS?
I thought he got it here
