I have been training with weights for almost a year. When I started in february I was 290lb’s and now I am about 240. My question is I would really like to start powerlifting but I still need to lose some weight. My question is I still need to lean out but I really want to get into powerlifting. Can I lean out by doing more GPP work while still getting stronger? Or should I get where I want to be and then start PW training?
I think this would be the better route. I believe Colin Wilson has been dropping body fat while powerlifting, so you might want to ask him about what he’s been doing.
diet is the key here i recomend mario dispasquals metabolic diet it was developed by a great powerlifter for powerlifters…for gpp dont do hitt. do gpp warm ups see my log for reference, and do some strong man stuff as assitant work this will help your workcapacity,…and i got to warn you… usually when we have guys come to our club like you who have lost lots of weigth and want to start powerlifting they usually within about 4-6 months they usually get really happy with there weight and only care about getting stronger the whole body image thig goes away real fast when they go from benching 300-420 in 6 months because they notice weight gain = big lifts…big martin
i agree with big martin, weight gain typically = increase in strenght
however as tate has so nicely put it in his latest article, there has to be a balance between muscle and fat.
there is a stereotype in powerlifting and that’s that everybody is fat and out of shape. while this does apply to a good portion of people i’ve seen, met, and talked to at meets (and they even admit it), it doesn’t have to be.
now don’t get me wrong, you won’t be competing at 5% bf or anything insane like that. but you don’t have to be fat to be good at powerlifting. thick, yes… overly fat, no.
do some GPP. be it in a warm up, on your off days, whatever. mix it up with sled dragging and extra workouts.
