Starting Back From Anxiety Attacks

Hey everyone,
Just got back from my first BJJ class at the new gym…it was a blast! It was a mixed class, meaning both beginners and intermediate/advanced were in the group. I had the least amount of experience out of everyone there, but all of the guys were real nice and showed great patience as I learned the moves. There is a beginners only class on Tuesday and Thursday nights that I’ll probably start going to, just until I get the hang of the moves and then I can go back to this class (it fits my schedule nicely).

The instructor was great, showing us the move we were to work on several times before breaking us off into groups. Getting to work with guys of different size was interesting, too, b/c with the heavier guys, you definitely had to call on more muscle recruitement and technique to execute the move properly.

I could tell that my endurance training paid off, though, b/c while I worked up a good sweat, I wasn’t overly tired and could’ve gone longer had I not had to leave to go back to work.

Like anything, the more you do something the better you’ll become. By the end of the class I had picked up on things pretty well and even impressed the instructor with my sweeping ability.

Tomorrow I’ll hit the gym for an MMA endurance workout and then Thursday it’s back for more BJJ and Friday will be the second MMA strength training workout.

Take care,
Dan

Well, usually I’m in there Mondays and Wednesdays around 7:30-8 a.m. Fridays I usually go in a little later…around 9 a.m.

But, it’s not like that’s set in stone…I do also workout in the afternoon if I don’t feel like working out in the mornings.

Send me a PM and we’ll figure something out.

Where is this combo place? colroadobjj?
I’ve been thinking of starting Muai Thai, but I’m not opposed to the option of both.

Hey everyone,
Before I get into today’s workout, I must share the great news…I found a new place to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing! It’s literally 5 minutes from my house, so I’ll have no problem going 2-3 times a week. I went in today and talked with the owners, and they are a great couple. Very friendly, as were the several guys who were rolling on the mats that I talked to. I’ll be doing an article on the studio for my paper and will also be doing a series detailing my training experience there. I’m so pumped! My first class is Saturday morning, it’s a Muay Thai class…I’ll then take BJJ Tuesday morning and Thursday evenings.

As for today’s workout, it was a home boxing workout, lasted 30 minutes. Worked a lot of combos on the heavy bag and also did a lot of Muay Thai knee strikes and finished with a DB shoulder tri-set and some abs.

Tomorrow is my second MMA strength-training workout.

Hey everyone,
Had a good MMA endurance workout this morning. My body wasn’t that sore from yesterday’s BJJ class, aside from my hips which were a bit tender, otherwise I was good to go.

The rope skipping today went great…I think part of my problem was using the wrong-sized rope the past few times. I used a bit smaller rope today and really plowed through it…my right ankle is also back to 100%, so that made things easier as well.

I made it through the circuit in 27 minutes, which isn’t bad…I probably waste a couple of minutes going from upstairs to downstairs, though, as I use the racquetball court to do a majority of the circuit, then return upstairs to do the ab work on the cables and benches.

Tomorrow I’m going to do a home boxing workout in the A.M. and then take a BJJ class in the evening.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Went to my second BJJ class last night…this one was more on my level than the class I took on Tuesday, where I was mixed in with advanced students. This was strictly for beginners and for me, it was perfect as this was just my 3rd class overall.

We started out with a few drills to loosen up: forward and backward rolls over the shoulder; “shoot” drills (where you act like you’re taking a shot, come down on the front-facing knee, drag the second leg through and repeat with other leg); and an escape drill (swivel hips to one side and then bring bottom leg through).

We worked on breaking a person’s guard, getting side control after breaking the guard, pulling someone back into your guard after it’s been broken and finally, triangle chokes.

Apparently my long legs are good for something as the instructor said that they are a great weapon to use when putting on a triangle b/c it’s easier for me to hook someone than it is someone with shorter legs…that’s cool!

I was wiped by the time class was over and came home had my PWO shake, showered and after some reading was ready for bed. After sleeping for 30-40 minutes, some jackass can’t control their dogs and this crazy loud barking jolts me awake…then two cars with obnoxiously loud car stereos proceed to pull into the parking lot. It took a while to fall back asleep after that. Just one more reason my wife and I are in serious house-hunting mode; we need to get out of our apartment ASAP.

Later this morning I’m going to hit the gym for my second MMA strength-training workout.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the gym and had an awesome workout! I hit my goal of 3 plates on each side for my partial sumo deadlifts and also impressed myself by getting 4 full reps with 275 pounds! I was a little sore from last night’s BJJ class, but after a few extra minutes of stretching, I felt fine and had no problems blowing through the workout.

Here’s the complete breakdown:

Explosive Strength Work:

  1. Jumping Box Squat, 5x3: BW
  2. Explosive Clap Push-up, 5x3: BW

Maximal Srength Work:
Supramaximal Partial Reps, Sumo Deadlift, 1x2-3 w/120% 1RM: 315

Sumo Deadlift, 1xone short of failure w/ 90% 1 RM: 275x5

A1) One-legged Squats, 3x3: BW
A2) Push Press, 3x3: 145

B1) Dips, 3x5: 52.5
B2) Side Deadlifts: skipped

C1)External Rotation, 2x12: 10 lbs (DB)
C2) Reverse Wrist Curls, 2x12: 40

Don’t think I’ll be getting back to the gym this evening for an endurance workout (too much work), so I’ll just move it to tomorrow morning and do it then, along with a 1-2 mile run afterwards.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Had a solid MMA endurance workout today. Due to both racquetball courts being occupied when I arrived at the gym, I had to make some slight alterations to the routine…eliminating the forward and side tosses and adding in a second round of side MB throwdowns, extra rope skipping and threw in this shoulder circuit with resistance bands.

Also ran a 1/2 mile (full speed) afterwards. Would’ve run longer but my wife had to leave the gym to get ready for work. Workout lasted 35 minutes total and I was spent afterwards.

I’ll be taking tomorrow off and then will return to the gym on Monday to begin the next week of training.

Tomorrow the wife and I are going house hunting…wish us luck! We’re really ready to get out of our apartment complex, which seems to get crappier by the day.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Unfortunately I’ll start off with a bit of bad news…the house-hunting trip my wife and I went on yesterday was a bust. Everything in our price range was a major fix-up…I don’t mind having to do repair work or replace things, but these houses needed major overhauls and thus, with all the money it would cost to fix, priced us out of a lot of things. Oh well, we’ll keep looking and hopefully find something we like sooner rather than later.

Went to the gym this morning and had a great workout…felt good and strong on squats, which is nice b/c when I started back lifting a month ago my squat was terrible…it’s shot up over 40 pounds since that time.

Here’s a complete breakdown:

Explosive Strength Work

  1. Jump Shrugs, 8x3: 215

Maximal Strength Work

  1. Supramaximal Hold: Back Squat, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 275

Half Squat, 1xas many as possible w/90% of 1RM: 225x6

Supramaximal Hold BB Delcine Bench Press, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 255

BB Decline Bench Press 1xas many as possible w/ 90% 1 RM: 225x3

A1) Overhead Squat, 3x3: 95
A2) Chin-up, 3x3: BW + 32.5 lbs.

B1) Single-led DB Deadlift, 3x3: 32.5
B2) One-arm DB Rows, 3x3: 90

C1) Hand Walks, 3x5: BW
C2) Power Cleans, 3x5: 135

Reverse Wrist Curls, 3x5: 60

Tomorrow will be a BJJ class, so I’m looking forward to that.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just finished a good home boxing workout. Actually started off with a 20-minute run…not sure exactly how far I went but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-3 miles…I’ll drive the route tomorrow to figure out the exact distance.

After a brief cool-down from the run, I finished off the rest of my workout working on my punching combinations and some Muay Thai knee strikes. Also did a few sets of push-ups, sit-ups and then wrapped up with 10-15 minutes of stretching.

Workout lasted about 55 minutes. Was going to go to BJJ tonight but something came up and I won’t be able to attend, but thankfully I’ve got the heavy bag at home so the home boxing workout alternative came in very handy today.

Tomorrow I’ll hit the gym for an MMA endurance workout.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the gym and another draining MMA endurance workout. I love doing these things, though, because I can tell that they are making a difference in terms of my endurance and stamina. Plus, I love the weird glances I get from people when I do the medicine ball exercises and most of the other exercises in the routine.

Today’s workout lasted 35 minutes, took me 25 minutes to get through the circuit and then I ran for 10 minutes. Was going to do 2 miles but cut it short b/c my right shin was bothering me and I don’t want it to be overly sore for tomorrow’s BJJ class.

Don’t have much planned for the rest of today. Probably will do some meditation, read and play some Nintendo DS. I’m hooked on Big Brain Academy…a game that exercises your brain, it’s simple in design but very, very addicting. My goal is to make it through the day without turning on the TV…I’m trying to do that a couple of times a week, simply because there’s nothing worth watching so I’d rather find something else to do with my time than channel surf. Plus, I think it helps with my anxiety/stress.

Take care,
Dan

Dan , Big Brain Academy …is seriously addicting!

Pat

Hey everyone,
Went to my BJJ class last night and I’m pretty sore this morning. We worked on our double-leg takedowns, control from side mount, switching to full mount and then worked on keylocks. I seemed to pick things up much quicker this week than last…and also did much better on the warm-up drills as well. Hopefully next week I’ll be able to go 2x a week.

I should be hitting the gym here in a bit to get in my second MMA strength training workout. My wife’s wanting to go to the gym when she gets off work today, so I might go back with her and do my MMA endurance workout then, too.

Take care,
Dan

Just got back from my MMA strength training workout. Nailed 325x3 on the partial rep sumo deadlifts and hit 285x4 on full reps, so was real happy about that, especially since I was sore from last night’s BJJ class. I’ve noticed my right shoulder/rotator cuff is rather sore, so I’ll back off of any direct shoulder work for a few days to see how it feels. I should be heading back to the gym in 2-3 hours for an MMA endurance workout, and then will take the weekend off.

Here’s a complete breakdown of today’s workout:

Explosive Strength Work:

  1. Jumping Box Squat, 5x3: BW
  2. Explosive Clap Push-up, 5x3: BW

Maximal Srength Work:
Supramaximal Partial Reps, Sumo Deadlift, 1x2-3 w/120% 1RM: 325

Sumo Deadlift, 1xone short of failure w/ 90% 1 RM: 285x4

A1) One-legged Squats, 3x3: BW
A2) Push Press, 3x3: 145

B1) Dips, 3x5: 55
B2) Side Deadlifts: skipped

C1)External Rotation, 2x12: 10 lbs (DB)
C2) Reverse Wrist Curls, 2x12: 40

Take care,
Dan

You’ve been a fucking machine DJ. Keep that shit up! Oh how lucky you are getting to meet, Karma! You’re definitely staying the course. Hopefully more people are reading this and can get some inspiration from what you’re doing! Keep going, bro!

Thanks, PGA. I think I might’ve seen Karma today in the gym, but wasn’t positive if it was her or not.

I seem to get messages a couple of times a week from people who are reading this thread, some post on here others don’t…I’m just glad people enjoy it and it helps them feel better about their situation…I know keeping this log has helped me a lot. If I have a bad day, one of the things that cheers me up is to go back through and read this thread from the beginning to see the progress I’ve made.

AS long as it helps you when you’re not feeling 100% its doing its job. Sometimes the littles things help us out. I’m glad you found a way to do that. Seriously, you’ve been kicking ass! Keep it up!

Happy Saturday!
Just a quick update: went for a 1.5-mile walk with the wife and our dog this morning and will hit the gym later this afternoon when my wife gets off work to get in my MMA endurance workout.

Then I’m taking tomorrow off; my wife and I going to Golden and going to do the Coors Brewery (can’t beat the free beers at the end) and then grabbing some pizza since it’s our cheat day.

I’ve got some work to do this afternoon…trying to finish this profile of a local resident who teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing and is a former MMA competitior (he fought in the UFC twice). I’ll probably post a link to the article once it’s published in the paper, which comes out on Wednesday.

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the gym and had a great MMA endurance workout. Blasted through the Hammer Down circuit in 25 minutes, then ran for 10 minutes (about 1.5 miles) and then stretched for 10 minutes. Gym was dead since it was a Sat. afternoon, so I had no problem finding room to skip rope and do the medicine ball exercises.

That’s it for this week…I’ll be back in the gym Monday.

Take care,
Dan

Glad to see you’re not letting things hold you back from accomplishing your goals, hon.

Oh, I was there from 10-11:30 with Sean. Wore red/black tank and shorts, ran 1.5 mi and trained back. How many times do I have to tell you just fucking grab me and say hi! Or, I suppose you could always trip me on my 90th lap (honestly, I’d welcome the excuse to stop)… lol

I have no clue what you look like so just step up!
