Starting Back From Anxiety Attacks

Hey everyone,
Had a great MMA endurance workout today…I was so wiped by the time I was done it took a while to cool off. Workout lasted about 25-30 minutes. I’m managing to get through it a bit faster each time, which is good. My rope skipping has also greatly improved, as I only had to stop a couple of times today.

Tomorrow I’ll either do another home boxing workout or will take the afternoon off.

My teeth are a bit sore today after getting them cleaned. All that scraping really bothers me, plus my teeth are already a bit sore b/c of my wisdom teeth issues.

Haven’t had too bad a problem with headaches/head pain today…agian no Tylenol or Advil so far so that makes 3 days, so things appear to be getting better. I am going to the doctor on Friday to get checked out to see if they can figure out just what exactly is causing the headaches.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
It’s been a good solid week of lifting and after today’s workout, I was especially pumped up about my efforts in the gym. I was able to hit 300x3 on the partial rep sumo deadlifts and then followed that with 7 FULL REPS with 255 pounds!

Here’s the complete breakdown of today’s workout:

Explosive Strength Work:

  1. Jumping Box Squat, 5x3: BW
  2. Explosive Clap Push-up, 5x3: BW

Maximal Srength Work:
Supramaximal Partial Reps, Sumo Deadlift, 1x2-3 w/120% 1RM: 300

Sumo Deadlift, 1xone short of failure w/ 90% 1 RM: 255x7

A1) One-legged Squats, 3x3: BW
A2) Push Press, 3x3: 140

B1) Dips, 3x5: 50
B2) Side Deadlifts: skipped

C1)External Rotation, 2x12: 20 lbs (cable)
C2) Reverse Wrist Curls, 2x12: 40

Did 2 sets of DB shrugs with 95’s followed by holding the DB’s for as long as possible before my grip failed.

Tomorrow I’ll get in another MMA endurance workout.

Picked up the films from my CT scan…turns out not only do I have hypertrophy of the turbinates, but I also have a deviated septum (on the left side) and my upper wisdom teeth are impacted…I think that’s all the evidence I need as to why I have so much pain and pressure in my head and why I get headaches from time to time. Again, I see the ENT on Monday to figure out the course of treatment.

Sunday the wife and I are going old-school and attending the Poison-Cinderella concert that’s in town. I like both bands a lot (we’re both stuck in the 80’s with our music and proud of it!) so it should be a lot of fun.

Take care,
Dan

Sorry to only read your post now. I have never had anxiety problems, but I do work as an ER nurse with a ton of people who have Panic Disorders. You are not alone.

It sounds like you’ve made some really healthy choices for yourself and I applaud you! Hang in there! And the training…horrah!!

Thanks for the kind words, chinadoll. Always appreciated from someone as nice as you.

Hey everyone,
Man, is it hot out here in CO! We’re almost at 100 and are supposed to get as high as 103 today and tomorrow and also hit triple digits Monday and Tuesday as well.

This morning I hit the gym for a good MMA endurance workout. I had to eliminate a couple of the medicine ball exercises b/c all the aerobics and gymnastics courts were full, but I compensated by doing some extra ab twisting work and also doing some extra reps on the other exercises in the circuit and ran a .5 mile. Would’ve run longer but my right ankle was bothering me a bit, so I didn’t want to push things too much. Workout lasted about 30 minutes total.

Tomorrow my wife and I are going to go to a beginner’s Yoga class. I think it will be good for me, not only in terms of improving flexibility, range of motion and posture, but the breathing and relaxation will be good for my anxiety as well.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the gym and had a really good MMA strength training workout. Here’s the stats:

Explosive Strength Work

  1. Jump Shrugs, 8x3: 210

Maximal Strength Work

  1. Supramaximal Hold: Back Squat, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 260

Half Squat, 1xas many as possible w/90% of 1RM: 225x4

Supramaximal Hold BB Delcine Bench Press, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 245

BB Decline Bench Press 1xas many as possible w/ 90% 1 RM: 210x6

A1) Overhead Squat, 3x3: 75
A2) Chin-up, 3x3: BW + 32.5 lbs.

B1) Single-led DB Deadlift, 3x3: 30
B2) One-arm DB Rows, 3x3: 85

C1) Hand Walks, 3x5: BW
C2) Power Cleans, 3x5: 115

Reverse Wrist Curls, 3x5: 50

In a sec I’ll post the results from my trip to the ear-nose-throat specialist that I saw today.

So, today had my appointment with the ENT. Looked over my CT and also looked up my nose. In his opinion, my turbinates aren’t causing any problems, they are just a bit enlarged b/c that’s how my nose was made (I have a rather large nose overall). My sinuses are all in good shape as well. The thing that’s been messing up my breathing is a deviated septum. When he showed it to me on the CT, you could see how far over to the left it had been pushed.

For the next 6 weeks, I’m to take Nasonex, two sprays in each nostril, once a day. Then I’ll go back and we’ll see if that’s helped my breathing or not. If not, then it will have to be fixed by surgery. If the spray is working, then I’ll likely continue that for a little while longer.

The doctor said my septum isn’t so bad off that I need surgery ASAP, hence the sprays. But, he said that surgery is likely going to be needed at some point…it’s just a question if it’s 6-8 weeks or 6-12 months.

So, the good news is that I know what’s been bothering me. The surgery itself isn’t too bad, I’ll have to miss a week of work and also take 2-3 weeks off from heavy lifting (but can do cardio and light weights after a week). Obviously the bad news is that I’ll need surgery at some point. Not that I’m afraid or anything but surgeries aren’t cheap, so an extra expense (even with insurance) isn’t something I’m looking forward to.

I’ll let you know how things go with the nasal spray. Good thing about this spray is that it doesn’t promote anxiety, which I was worried about since a lot of sprays that is a common side effect.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just finished up my MMA endurance workout…and I’m wiped! For some reason I got a wild hair up my ass and threw in some extra sets of tricep rope extensions and incline DB curls at the end. The circuit took about 25 minutes to complete…I had to cut the rope skipping at the end a bit short b/c my right ankle was really bothering me. I tweaked it the other day doing single-leg squats and while it feels a lot better than a few days ago, it’s still not 100% so I didn’t want to push things too far.

I also hit the gym yesterday for some cardio…did 10 minutes on the elliptical, then 10 minutes of intervals on the stationary bike (30 sec. sprint, 30 sec. regular speed) and then finished things off with a 1-mile run.

Tomorrow I’m going to do a home boxing workout and then will be back in the gym Friday for my second strength training workout.

As for my nasal problems, I’ve been taking my spray the past two nights and while it’s too early to tell if my breathing has improved, I can say that my headaches/head pain have decreased since I started using the spray, so that’s good.

Take care,
Dan

Damn DJ you’re really busting your ass! Keep going, bro!

Thanks for the compliment, PGA, I appreciate it. BTW, have you started your sports blog yet?

Hey everyone,
Before I get into today’s workout, I must share the great news…I found a new place to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing! It’s literally 5 minutes from my house, so I’ll have no problem going 2-3 times a week. I went in today and talked with the owners, and they are a great couple. Very friendly, as were the several guys who were rolling on the mats that I talked to. I’ll be doing an article on the studio for my paper and will also be doing a series detailing my training experience there. I’m so pumped! My first class is Saturday morning, it’s a Muay Thai class…I’ll then take BJJ Tuesday morning and Thursday evenings.

As for today’s workout, it was a home boxing workout, lasted 30 minutes. Worked a lot of combos on the heavy bag and also did a lot of Muay Thai knee strikes and finished with a DB shoulder tri-set and some abs.

Tomorrow is my second MMA strength-training workout.

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the gym and had a great MMA strength-training workout. My partial-rep DL went up to 305x3…next time I’m going for 3 plates on each side! I’ve noticed that with all the endurance workouts and cardio and a cleaned-up diet, I’m starting to lean out a bit…I’m sure once I start taking my Muay Thai and BJJ classes that I’ll drop a bit more BF%. My weight is staying right around the 185 mark…I’m happy with it being there but I think I look better when I’m at the 190-195 mark, so we’ll see how that goes as it might take longer to add on those pounds with all the classes/lifting/endurance/cardio that I’m doing.

Here’s the complete breakdown of today’s workout:

Explosive Strength Work:

  1. Jumping Box Squat, 5x3: BW
  2. Explosive Clap Push-up, 5x3: BW

Maximal Srength Work:
Supramaximal Partial Reps, Sumo Deadlift, 1x2-3 w/120% 1RM: 305

Sumo Deadlift, 1xone short of failure w/ 90% 1 RM: 265x5

A1) One-legged Squats, 3x3: BW
A2) Push Press, 3x3: 140

B1) Dips, 3x5: 50
B2) Side Deadlifts: skipped

C1)External Rotation, 2x12: 10 lbs (DB)
C2) Reverse Wrist Curls, 2x12: 40

Did some plate pinchers after the wrist curls, used 25 lbs. plates…first set held on for 70 seconds and second set 62 seconds.

I might go back to the gym later for an MMA endurance workout (if my wife decides she’s going to the gym when she gets home from work)…and then tomorrow I’ll get in my first Muay Thai class at the MMA school.

Take care,
Dan

Nope not yet. Still dragging my feet. I may use the British Open as my first story.

Dan, this is the best program I found to beat Panic & Anxiety attacks once and for all.

Panic Away by Joe Barry (just google it )

It will change your life. I don’t make a penny for the endorsement , don’t know the guy and frankly could care less. I just found his technique different from anything I had ever read…and it worked. So much so, that if I come across ANYONE dealing with Panic and Anxiety , I recommend it.
It can free you FOREVER!
Best of Luck

Pat

Hey everyone,
Well, decided to take the day off yesterday. After 5 straight days of exercise, I needed the break. Today the wife and I took our dog up to the mountains for a nice hike. Got in a pretty good workout…we were out there for about an hour, maybe 90 minutes.

Tomorrow I’ll hit the gym twice for an MMA strength training workout in the A.M. and then an endurance workout in the late-afternoon.

Tuesday I’ll be going to my first BJJ class at the new facility.

So, my schedule is going to look like this for the next month:

Monday A.M.: Hammer Down: Strength
Monday P.M.: Hammer Down: Endurance

Tuesday A.M.: BJJ

Wednesday A.M.: Hammer Down: Endurance

Thursday: off or BJJ

Friday A.M.: Hammer Down: Strength
Friday P.M.: Hammer Down: Endurance

Saturday A.M.: Muay Thai

Sunday A.M.: Yoga, hiking, cardio or off.

Have had a very enjoyable weekend…went and watched a play “Beyond Therapy” downtown Friday night and last night went to a cookout that my wife’s boss was having at a nearby park…got to try some Thai food and it was very, very good. This morning we went for our hike, came home, made breakfast and are just relaxing now. I wish weekends like this were longer…

Take care,
Dan

Hey everyone,
Went to the gym this morning to get my MMA strength training workout in. I’m feeling pretty good right now, so if things go well, I’ll get in my endurance workout here in about 3-4 hours. My strength continues to increase, which is a good thing. I’ve noticed I’ve put some size on my quads/hams, arms, shoulders, back and chest…my calves are getting stronger (from all the rope skipping), but I might need to add in some calf raises 2x a week to help those grow (they are my most stubborn bodypart in terms of growth).

Explosive Strength Work

  1. Jump Shrugs, 8x3: 215

Maximal Strength Work

  1. Supramaximal Hold: Back Squat, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 260

Half Squat, 1xas many as possible w/90% of 1RM: 225x5

Supramaximal Hold BB Delcine Bench Press, 1x120% of 1RM for 6 seconds: 250

BB Decline Bench Press 1xas many as possible w/ 90% 1 RM: 215x5

A1) Overhead Squat, 3x3: 85
A2) Chin-up, 3x3: BW + 32.5 lbs.

B1) Single-led DB Deadlift, 3x3: 30
B2) One-arm DB Rows, 3x3: 90

C1) Hand Walks, 3x5: BW
C2) Power Cleans, 3x5: 135

Reverse Wrist Curls, 3x5: 50

Tomorrow’s my first BJJ class at the new facility…I will let you all know how it goes.

Take care,
Dan
