Squat Rack Curls Quatro

There were five people in my university’s gym today within 15 feet of one another who were all deadlifting over 400lbs during the same workout. My training partner and one other guy were working over 500. It was a great moment, an anti-SRC moment, if you will.

Also, I just realized this but my school gym is called the Student Recreation Center…SRC!!! O_o

Watched Eminem Jr work out yesterday lol…all dressed just like young Eminem, beater and all. It made me laugh, at least he didn’t curl int he squat/power rack.

I did an extra set of squats today, just to oggle the coed set up behind me. Not that it’s SRC worthy, but I’m already feeling like jello.

Short Version:

Swole bodybuilder bruh comes into a gym, stacks up a couple of plyo boxes to do BB Rows from, so he can “get a full stretch” Sets up with a bar on the front of the power cage, does his rows with zero stretch at all, and upon racking the bar, dumped the weight while he was strapped to the bar, tumble to the floor, lulz were had.
That’s my gym!!! I wish I had seen that.

him: I don’t know how to do squats, can you show me?

me: Sure

I have to give him credit though, he’s willing to listen and learn.
Thats win.

I started working out at a new gym because I’m working a new contract outside of Pittsburgh. The only thing in this area is businesses so the gym definitely caters towards the corporate crowd, which brings the obvious hilarity.

On Thursday the squat rack was occupied by a guy doing curls, with no weight on the bar. He did a couple of sets like that too. I couldn’t believe it. Normally I would have been pissed, but I was pretty amused so I just enjoyed the moment and watched while I did a warm up and some stretching.

Yesterday morning a different guy was doing shrugs in the squat rack. Fuck me man.

The funniest part is all the businessmen that use this gym as a social club. High fives galore.

Had a guy last night tell me that if you go wider than shoulder width on your squat setup with your feet then you are cheating and stupid and asking for lower back problems. Also, people who bench with their hands wider than their shoulders are cheating. And, of course, people who sumo deadlift are OBVIOUSLY cheating since they only have to move the bar like three inches.

This was pretty much a diatribe of about 5 minutes. Non-stop. Which if you are sitting there listening to this tripe is a long time.

I just stared at him with a half-smile for a few seconds. I then looked at him and said:

“Have you ever seen that Star Trek episode where Kirk fights that big lizard guy?”

Him with an extremely confused look on his face. “No. I don’t think so.”

Me. “I think I would go gay for Kirk. I’m going to go home and watch that now. See ya.”

He was visibly confused now. I just walked away.

Best response ever!

A guy told me all of the above, only opposite. I listen because he made the cover of a popular fitness magazine and has been a trainer for several years.

I’ll schedule my work out when he happens to be there and get a few “nuggets” of knowledge.

“trainer” at a cardio-type gym asked how I had managed to break through my recent deads plateau. Told him I was learning to hold my breath and keep my abs tight. His reply was that I should stop holding my breath. I was going to faint.

anyone seen people fainting while lifting?

Absolutely

ouch?!

Yes. Be careful with breath control, it can make or break you, quite literally.

hahaha. This happened to me last Sunday. We were pulling from boxes and I pulled a PR weight for a double, set it down, turned around and went legless to the ground. I’d never had it happen before and I pull a lot. I always hold my breath in my gut when I lift. I’m not sure what the difference was.

The episode is called “Arena” and the “big lizard guy” is called a Gorn. Minus 5 internet points.
But plus 100 just for knowing about that episode at all! I love you!

 Honestly I think about this thread a lot when I’m in the gym now. I’m just waiting for opportunities to come up.

I work for a big company, and there is a fully equipped gym in the basement. I’m talking to one of the trainers between sets, just bullshitting(she is actually very cool, a competitive figure athlete) when one of her clients(also female) comes up, and they go off to begin their training session. they set up on the other side of the gym, and partway through their session the trainer walks by me to grab some free weights for her client. as she walks by she motions for me to take my headset off. I do, and she tells me the woman she is training has the hots for me and will not shut up about the things she wants to do to me. then she says “sorry if I bugged you, just use that thought for fuel for your next set.” I love my gym
Where is this gym… I want to see such trainer B)

The problem isn’t so much the breath holding, what you’re looking at is vasovagal constriction or syncope and it typically happens when you hyperventilate and follow it up with a hard valsalva manouver. A valsalva being holding your breath against increased pressure to exhale.

Pretty much exactly what you see when you watch that video, lots of hyperventilation followed by a deadlift which is a valsalva.

The two easiest ways to reduce your risk of this are:

 1. Don’t hyperventilate beforehand. Even if you’re holding your breath while lifting it’s for what? 8 seconds? You don’t need any extra oxygen.
 2. Exhale, grunt, holler, as you get the lift completed.
