Squat Contest: BBer, PLer, WLer and Strongman (vid)

I’ve never done a rep test where I could re-rack the bar after beginning; it’s an interesting way to approach it. In August of 09 I did 50 w/bodyweight and it took me a little over two minutes. Good Times!

That was humbling. The first set felt really easy, but after racking it I just felt like I was in shock. I weighed in at 195 and went 20, 4, 11, then 6 for 41 total. I used a belt unlike the guys in the video lol.

next time I try this, I won’t rack it. I think racking took away too much time and allowed me to realize how I could barely walk in between sets lol

Try the tabata protocol sometime. Dan John spoke about doing it with front squats of 95lbs. I’ve done that and used a safety squat bar as well, it’s pretty crazy, and has some built in rest periods.

Great showing. I did a 40 reper with 225 a while back after a bad day at work where I wanted to blow off some steam, haha. It’s an oddly rewarding experience.

Just curious after watching that video and trying this, why didn’t you follow the powerlifter approach and knock sets of 7? What made you do the high 1st set and then suffer in reps on the next sets?

True. I have been doing the 4 week chinup challenge on this site, and on the 6th day you do as many as you can in 5 minutes. I do add 35 lbs to my bodyweight, but I only do 5 at a time for my first 6 sets, and then drop to 4. Although doing 10 is no problem, doing shorter bursts helped me get to 55 last time. Going for 60 this Monday.

Right? I have never done a workout like this, and don’t know how I would have approached it if I never had seen one. But, after watching the video it seemed to me that the powerlifter’s plan was the best approach. That’s how I plan on doing it, and was thinking like you said you did your challenge with 5 and I was thinking 8. 5 seems to little because unlike the chin-ups with squats you have to rack and unrack the weight, chews up to much time. For the 1st one I’m just gonna do 7 like the powerlifter.

Good luck

Why no crossfit guy?

That was pretty damn ridiculous.

Might not be that big in Germany. I’m pretty happy with the turnout they managed in the first place honestly.

Because the crossfit guy would have embarrassed them with 5 min of non stop squatting.

To quote the channel:

‘Yeah we thought about that, but it would not be fair, because it suits them too much. The guy we would have picked is 95kg and has a max of 250 AND trains for endurance…’

Maybe, but I don’t think so

Yeah, I was being a little sarcastic, but it would be interesting to see.

I’m not even sure whether I think 20 rep squats are a great thing to include in a routine until advanced, but doing 315x23 for me is probably my most memorable weightlifting moment to date.

That sounds absolutely horrible; I’ll add it to my list of things to try. This challenge actually inspired me to try the 20 rep breathing squats

I agree with both of you. My concern was with time wasted racking and unracking. The plan was originally to do sets of 12, but I got cocky. Next time I’ll definitely try spreading it out better.

That’s it right there, adaptation. After years away from heavy squats for high reps and when I probably couldn’t hit 300 for 10 I remember doing bodywt plus 5# for 61 reps w/o racking the wt. And I wasn’t as big or as strong as those guys and probably only at 85% at the time. But that’s how I trained @ the time.

So do we know how the PL and WL train? Not all PLs and WLs train the same. Their form was not the same. I don’t think you can easily compare them w/ just one competion.

I don’t think you are getting the right lessons from this.
