I never said sprinting was not catabolic but what I said is that it worked better for me. I don’t know how you can say that my point on pro bodybuilder’s drug use is mute. You shouldn’t even compare what is best for a bodybuilder to a natural trainer. Pros have superior genetics and are on bucket loads of drugs.
(I also would like to apologize for hijacking this thread to assist a fellow competitive BB’er). 7-weeks? A good time to begin the jump rope. You may also find that you will need to up your calories a bit. So really monitor! I’m also hoping that at this point you’ve begun your posing practice. You need to work that into your schedule and you will proably find that at three weeks out that you need to cut down the skipping and just maintain the posing. Also pose in between your sets - if you’re working arms, strike a double bi pose, etc. Static posing helps tremendously for precontest! I also like to practice posing with my eyes closed (at home, in front of a full length mirror), to help my “positioning”.
If I can be of ANY help you be sure and let me know!
By Mute I am saying that what works for a natural works for a drug user in that elite bb’s do what works the best. I stay lean with cardio (1 hour 4-6 days per week) on or off drugs. Low Intensity is better for musle fullness on a lower carb diet regardless of what you are using. I respsct everyones opinion on this one though as I must admit we are “all different.”
I thought I would throw in my 2-cents here: Our good friend John Berardi advocates both aerobic and anaerobic exercise in order to reduce bodyfat through different mechanisms. I believe it is best to do both also.
I am partial to sprints because I feel really good after doing them, more so than long cardio. Also as a full time engineering student it is sometimes hard to find an hour a day to do low intensity- long duration cardio for an hour, where as 20 min. can pretty easily be spared.
To sum up, do whatever makes you happy and include some of the rest!
Anybody stop and think that maybe everyone is right? Come on, I can’t be the only one that thinks both forms of cardio have their merits…low intensity/long duration 50% of the time and high intensity/short duration 50% of the time. Now everybody pat each other on the back and say “I’m sorry for being stubborn, let’s direct our anger and emotion towards something productive…let’s all go take a shit on the hood of Bill Phillip’s Lamborghini.”
Sorry jeff, your post wasn’t up when I wrote mine. Amen brother.
I believe that there are benefits to both sprinting and long distance running. Why not do both?
No problem Marc, you put our point very eloquently when you said “lets all go take a shit on the hood of Bill Phillips lamborghini.” Amen to that too, brother!
Patricia,
I am wanting to do heavy bag work as part of my cardio, but I’m not sure what to do. Do I hit the bag for 20 min straight? 5 min off with a min break? What would you recommend for a cutting phase? Bulking phase? What kind of gloves do you use? I’m not very knowledgeable about this so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi JayNick: cool. Okay, nope, don’t hit the bag for 20-min. straight. I train via “boxing rounds”: 3-min with a 1-minute rest in between rounds. So, make sure there’s a clock within eye range - or get a timer. We have three pairs of bag gloves. My favorite is Ko’s Everlast. Ringside makes a decent bag glove, too. And we just got a Everlast catalog! woo hoo! Okay, go to any of these sites for boxing equipment: www.ringside.com , www.everlastboxing.com or www.titleboxing.com .
If you need some more help with a heavy bag routine, Ko can help you. He da man!
As for a cutting phase: What I had posted above in my reply to Cam Birtwell, pretty much sums up what I did for a cutting phase. This month I begin my heavy bag training 1-2 times a week. So, I'm setting aside a day for heavy bag in the morning, and jump rope later in the day (these days, I do NOT weight train). When in a cutting phase I would supplement my weight training with heavy bag (punches) after upper body training (20-min), then heavy bag (kicks) after legs. I would set aside a full blown heavy bag session on a "off day" (for a 30-min session). Two nights a week were for the jump rope (30-min). Does this help?
Patrica,
Thanks for the info!
