SpiderMan3, Venom?

I don’t know if it is in a cheesy spot in the movie or what, but since it seemed only some of the overseas boys were complaining I would tweak their noses a bit.

My only complaint about the Aussies is they send us their crap beer.[/quote]

Haha. Well that is true as from memory the only Aussie beer I saw in the supermarkets were Fosters and nobody drinks that over here.

I’m happy to admit that the flag is something that would have sat well with the American fans, and that is where the money is so I’m not going to let it ruin a good movie.

Sorry about the call regarding dumbbest post ever. There was a guy on this site saying that Cro Cop was crap a while back. Maybe he should get that award.

It wasn’t “cheesy” so much as it was pretty blatant…like a Coke sign thrown up in the background. In the other movies, the placement was better and it added to the scene or the mood of that portion of the movie.

This time, I would add that in along with some of the other things that seemed rushed. This honestly had the potential to be a GREAT movie. Instead, it came across as “good” with great special effects with a huge hole indicating it could have been better.

I guess that is what happens when money gets involved and your lead character doesn’t even want to play the part after that.

I don’t get some of these posts like it just ruined the whole damn movie. People like that have issues.

If James Bond came running in to save the day with the Union Jack waving in the background we’d all say the same thing.

You’re right in the fact the movie seemed rushed. The weak points, for me, were…

  1. The lack of Venom. He was wasted in such a short role.
  2. The fall out between Peter and MJ. As stated by someone before, didn’t she have any faith in Spiderman.
  3. They tried to fit too much into the movie, which I find is a common occurance with Comic book based movies.

That honestly would not bother me at all and I am very surprised they haven’t shown the Union Jack just like that long before now. Everything else in those movies is pretty damn blatantly patriotic to his own country.

Spiderman, much like Superman, is an American Superhero. In fact, Superman’s slogan used to be, “Truth justice and the American way”. They only recently started leaving “American” out of it over the last 10-15 years.

Considering Spiderman is one the few heros who actually operates in a real city (like many Marvel superheroes…unlike DC’s Gotham or Metropolis) it shouldn’t shock anyone, foreign or otherwise, when they emphasize it in a movie.

We can’t help it if Captain Britain doesn’t sell as well as Captain America.

I loved when Roger Moore skiied off the cliff and popped the Union Jack parachute. One of my all time favorite Bond scenes.

LOL.

What are some of them going to do if they go ahead with a WonderWoman movie? Is anyone in the dark as to why her costume looks that way?

You make good points and it really doesn’t bother me that much in reality as we have discussed, there is much more to the movie than this one topic. It’s just something that is a little out of our cultural norm, and it is something very American.

Captain Britain doesn’t have the same ring to it though. The mental picture it gives me is something along the lines of Mr Bean.

Who do you see when I say “Captain Australia”

Mick Dundee?
James Hird?
Rolf Harris??

Well, to frame my response, I may as well let it be known that I have read many of the comics over the years, and that will colour my opinion of the movie.

I went with my girlfriend on opening night to see Spider-Man 3, and she absolutely loved it. Myself, I see it somewhere between OK and good. I think I shall have to watch it again on DVD to fully come to some sort of conclusion, but here it is as of now.

Yes, the CGI was fantastic; the work on Sandman alone better win some awards. Perhaps Pirates will offer some competition in this area…

As for Topher as Venom, I didn’t mind that. I think in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic title, Venom has been cast as a closer foil to Spider-Man than in the other comics. In Ultimate, Venom and Spider-Man’s fathers worked together on the symbiote suit and both fathers perished in the same plane crash. Eddie Brock is but a few years older than Parker, and both are of very slight build. Since they went with Tobey for Spider-Man, Topher for Venom works well enough. I really liked how they did the bell tower scene!

My main nit to pick is with the New Goblin. He started out very well with the improved glider and the first fight/chase scene. I was kinda disappointed with his suit design, but that is just aesthetics.

The part that didn’t sit well with me was him helping Spider-Man in the end; it just didn’t seem to fit to me. As a consolation, the New Goblin didn’t make it to the end and it won’t happen again. Well, at least for a while anyway… One never knows with comics…

Everyone’s complaining about Midnight Cowboy Parker and the stars & stripes scene…do people not know the meaning of the word ‘camp’?

Both of those things were ridiculous but I didn’t mind them. In fact, the scene where bad Peter makes the landlord’s daughter feed him cookies was possibly the best non-fighting moment in the whole movie…if it were an R we know what she really would have been doing. Likewise, all the fights needed for an R was more blood. As it is, I guarantee millions of kids are completely desensitized to the danger of getting a concussion.

I read an interview with Thomas Haden Church in the recent Esquire where he said, “I didn’t to look like I spent all my time in the gym. I wanted to look like a guy who lifted weights in the prison yard for 5 years. I started wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt to the gym, and my trainers got freaked out.” Which is why he gave an excellent performance.

(spoilers like hell)

These were the best fight scenes of any superhero movie, ever. The brawl in Harry’s house put over the black suit even more convincingly than the already disturbing water main ‘execution’ of Sandman. Particularly the fact that it went simply arrival, shit talking, BOXING. Yes, boxing.

When was the last time characters in a superhero movie went literally toe-to-toe? I can count the number of times I’ve been that shocked by a fight scene one one hand. Oh, and any silliness on the part of Bad Peter was more than offset by his finishing off of Harry at the end of this fight. That’s the first time in a long time that something the good guy did had me saying “Awwww, that’s COLD!” My girl said, “he’s MEAN.”

As for the handling of Venom, I would have expected a larger part for him. However, part of the symbiote is still alive in Dr. Connors’ lab, which means we should get Carnage. Venom was certainly handled correctly in his limited screen time however (save the non-tongue).

What I will say is that Harry’s change of heart happened way too suddenly. I would have much preferred a Pyrrhic victory/near-martyrdom for Spidey with Harry only providing an assist at the end and no full resolution of that thread.

Up until the final fight this movie was pretty bananas. And Spidey can stand in front of as many American flags as he wants.

Good post. I think some people will always say every movie sucks.

For a fan of the books, they tried to do way too much with one movie. That pretty much sums it up.

I wonder if WB freaked out that Raimi, Maguire, and Dunst have all stated they want to walk away after this one. So maybe they step in, make a few executive decisions, and force the producers to cram as much as possible into one two-and-a-half hour film. Bad move.

Then again, maybe I’m talking out of my ass and it was Sam’s idea all along. Either way, they killed the chance to develop several storylines with some real potential.

Gwen Stacey was the real first love of Parker, way before Mary Jane came along. The original Gwen Stacey storyline was one of the best not just in the history of the Spider-man books but in the entire history of comic books altogether. It’s easily up there with the Dark Phoenix saga of the X-men series.

And they demolished it…of course they had already done that by introducing MJ in the first movie (which I don’t understand) and by killing Doc Oc in the second movie. But they still could have done the original story a little justice.

For people who didn’t care about the books and just like the movies as a stand-alone story, it was decent at best. Still tried to do too much too fast.

Still going on with this are we?

Funny enough I was listening to a radio station the other day and they mocked that exact scene.

A mate told me one of the movie review TV shows did the same.

I never said it wasn’t ridiculous. However, it was awesome-ridiculous. Sorry, looks like you’re not better than me after all.
