No, Venom is what the suit becomes when combined with Eddie Brock. The suit itself is a symbiote. It has two origins. The classic story involves the symbiote coming from outer space and Jamison’s son (the astronaut) brings it back after a mission. It combines with Spiderman because it recognizes his power. It slowly tries to take over and Spiderman has to basically battle it off. The newer version of the story involves Eddie Brock and Parker’s fathers working on a cure for cancer and they create the symbiote. They realize their mistake and instead of destroying it, it gets stolen by Trask (the black guy in the new X-men movie who works for the government). It later finds it’s way to Eddie Brock years after their parents die in a plane crash.

he actaully got the suit when he was off in this other galaxy fighting some big war with the fantastic four and avengers - he was looking for a suit because his was destroyed. he saw the symbiote slithering around in a glass jar and he released it - allowing the symbiote to drape over him.

Then there must be three different origins because the one most accepted involved Jonah Jamison’s son bringing it back from space. This is also the story used on that cartoon show that came out in the 90’s. I pretty much doubt they are going the Fantastic Four route with this story so that only leaves the other two.[/quote]

The one from Secret Wars is the original as far as I know. It’s pretty much impossible to put that in the movie because that whole storyline is quite complex and too far out there for the regular audience. Too many characters are involved too.

Sorry that I’m going back to the whole bad casting issue but Topher Grace as Eddie Brock?!? I could barely have bought it if he was to play Kletus Kasady/Carnage…

The suit looks awesome though…

I agree. It only makes sense to cast him if they go with the storyline where their father’s created the suit. In the “Ultimate Spiderman” series, he and Brock are the same age. I also think Topher would have made a better Spiderman as far as his character. He would do “smartass” better.

Yeah, Parker’s usual red/blue suit got shredded in Secret Wars, so (as I recall) Mr. Fantastic assisted him with using the symbiote as a suit. I think that was in '84 or thereabouts, so I’m guessing that’s the ‘original’, as it was the first I remember seeing the black suit.

On a side note, a Secret Wars animated feature would probably rock. Total superhero chaos.

On a bit of a tangent (for all the nerds out there!) I have a first edition run of Secret Wars still bagged up and never opened!!

The best thing about the whole series was the Beyonders super 80s clothes and jerry curls/punch perm!!

Secret Wars is the original debut of the symbiote in the comics.

The story X refers to was for the cartoon, because Secret Wars is a bit goofy, geeky, and involved for the average peson.

Venom (Eddie Brock) debuted in Amazing Spider-Man 299-300, created by Todd MacFarlane.

There’s another Venom origin in Ultiate Spider-Man. In it, Eddie Brock and Peters’ fathers invented the Venom suit as a medical device/war machine.

From the casting of Grace and the little bit in the trailer where he goes, “Parker,” I think they are going to go with the Ultimate Spidey dtory, which is far more coherent, quite frankly, than the original (616) story.

If you haven’t read Ultimate Spidey, go to your local comic shop now and buy it.

Extra bonus geek points for anyone who can tell me the etymology of the ‘616’ designation.

Actually, if I’m not mistaken the very first origin involved Peter finding it himself during the Secret Wars saga.

EDIT: Sorry, I just now found the later posts. Above is the very first appearance of the black suit.
