Yeah, I have really short lower legs (what are those bones called?) for my torso so it works for me.

Tibia and fibula. Mine are short for my height as well. I think this is part of what makes squatting hard for me because I can’t get my heels under my butt properly.

Hi arachne- from a fellow Coloradan and martial artist. Congrats on the Blackbelt and the training is looking great.

 I try to work out alone at my work gym. But there is a cleaning guy who always seems to need to dust a bench when I am lifting. His timing is amazing. It’s the strangest thing! I guess I could ask him.

Someone is enjoying himself some arachne pie.

Soldog: Thanks! Keep watching this space… these numbers will keep going up!

Kimba: SNORT! Oh I think it’s just a coincidence he needs to dust that particular bench during the three hours a week I am lifting heavy stuff while panting.

Here’s a brew just for you - we’re trying to get chrys to open up a gourmet beer section in the bar.

Hey, did you not READ that the gourmet beers have been there all along? Feel free to add your favorite selections… I even brought beer flavored ice cream!

Well thanks. Mighty neighborly of you. Ah, delicious!
I’ll try that beer-flavored ice cream too Chrysalis. I’ll try anything once.

Ah- sorry! musta missed that one (OMG - I can’t PO the bartender, she’ll kick me out)

Here, soldog, have a scoop of Cold Smoke ice cream. Can it get any better, frozen beer??

Today

BB Deadlift 1x5 95, 105, 115, 125 lb < still feels good. Heading back up steadily and thinking form the whole time. I videoed 95 and 115 but for some reason 125 got cut short. Irritating. I’ll post it when I get home. I also did a video of squat at 65 and cut it short too. I’ll catch it again Friday.

Chinups with 15 lb db 1x3 2x2 < I’m also doing up to 5 sets of BW chinups every day.

BB Bench 1x5 55, 65, 75, 80 and 1x4 85 lb <I am actually starting to get the hang of these, thanks to exhaustive study on meat’s thread.

BB hipthrust 1x5 95, 115 lb < Kimba, these were not too hard and I could wiggle under the bar with the 35s. Go for it!

Dips 1x5 bw, 3 lb db < just giving these a try.

Happy lifting!

You are an ANIMAL with those weighted chins! On Friday, definitely trying the 35# plates and wiggling…wait, that doesn’t sound right.

I found that with deadlift form, the shit didn’t really hit the fan on form breaks until 135#. I hope you can zoom right past that weight, where I’ll be working it for a small while.

I love chinups. I love the way they make me feel, I love what they do for biceps.

Roger on the deadlift. I’ll hit 135 on Monday and video it. My grip feels good again, probably from all those chinups.

Form check, wow I need some beer ice cream after seeing this!

Ask Meat to take a look. I see that your hips are coming up first, which is something I’m trying like heck to correct in my own deadlift. I lift sumo, so my cue to fix this “force the knees out and squat the weight up” isn’t going to work for you.

Kimba,
Yup I spotted that too. I think “pulling yourself down to the bar” first might really help. The few times I’ve managed that it makes a difference.

So yesterday I’m finishing my bench set and there’s a guy in the gym with me who’s really nice and very strong. He and I have talked a lot about martial arts, and he is obviously very experienced about lifting.

He says to me: can I ask you a question? Why do you use that (the squat rack) rather than this (the smith machine)? I’m thinking he’s going to tell me I need to use the machine cause it’s safer.

I say, well, I’ve done a lot of reading and I think this requires more muscles to stabilize the lift and that one just keeps the weight moving in one plane.

He just nods and says, that’s right. I guess he was just seeing if I knew what I was doing.

Just took a look at the form checks videos.

try starting off with the bar about 4 inches closer to your shins. I like placing mine in the middle of my shoelaces, or where they would be. having it closer to your overall center of gravity should be a big help, as well as making it easier for you to sit back, and keep your chest up and out.

You don’t have to drop your ass that low, esp if it forces your knees that far forward during setup. with a wider stance, that may not be an issue, but there are 10,000 variations, and im throwing in my obnoxious two cents.

Thanks CBear,
I just started dropping my ass in an attempt to imitate a setup I saw on youtube. I’ll back off on that. I’ll implement some of your suggestions Monday and see if I can do better. I’m also practicing a smooth motion coming up rather than bringing the hips up first now that I’ve seen these videos.

Like cbear said roll it back to the middle of your foot to start. Then look up, go up and f*ck the bar. Good job!

Well, I played hooky today and went up snowboarding for Arapahoe Basin’s opening day, so no Friday lifting update. But, I did do 8 bw chinups on my way back to my PR of 10, and I did 3x2 of pullups.

Tomorrow I will get back into the gym for squats, etc, and I will video my squat. I think I have made some good fixes to form in the past week, so you all let me know if I am dreaming.

Over and out.
