You were trying to do the right thing. You saw the idiot was about to do some damage to himself and you thought that if you helped maybe you could prevent something bad from happening.
But think of it this way, if a friend of yours had a drinking problem and you offered to be his designated driver, you would just be enabling him to continue his self destructive behavior. You can’t be there every time he drinks, and most alcoholics don’t stop drinking until something bad happens to them, like losing their license, their car and spending a few days in jail.
Like you, I hate to stand back and watch something bad happen, but sometimes the only way people learn is by banging their head against the wall a few times.
I’ve spotted 600lbs more than once and assisting a lifter who has missed a lift isn’t the same as lifting the weight, they are still pushing you just make up the difference between what they can do and what they need to do. I can squat 495 so assisting someone to get 600 isn’t usually that big a deal.

Just to be clear: You two think it’s appropriate to spot someone whom you know clearly has at least 100 pounds too much weight on the bar? Is that really your position?

I think their position is the same as mine. Simply: They weren’t there, I wasn’t there, and YOU… WEREN’T THERE. You chose to criticize and humiliate a poster who was just relating a story. You don’t have enough information to make a judgement call like that.
Why not try improving yourself rather than dragging others down for a change???
I’ve got one for you guys along the same lines. I work out at a local Y at lunch time. I’ve got about 45 min to get in and lift, shower and get back to work. A kid i see in there all the time is working one of those Cybex bench machines (the one where you sit in a chair and push out and the weight goes up in the air).
Anyway, nice enough kid but he must be about 160 soaking wet. He puts 225 ont this thing and asks me to spot him. (This is a self spotting machine). I’m too nice a guy so I agree to it. He needs help getting past the initial sticking point so he can do one full rep with my help and them one more half rep.
In order to do this I have to stand in front of him and pull on the two side pins that he has the weight loaded on.
Nothing dangerous, just stupid and worthless. And yes I consider myself at fault for helping him do this. Just let me make that known before you all start to burn me.

Let me get this straight, you feel it is ok to let someone get seriously hurt just to prove your point? Are you kidding me? You know you sound alittle bit like an asshole, no offense I’ve been an asshole a few times in my life not something I’m proud of but it happened, and I’ve got to tell you apologizing will really make you like yourself alot more.

Some people cannot be helped and it is hardly your job to come to the rescue, and THAT is life…
Unless you come from the planet Krypton and are basically invulnerable, that would be a whole different ballgame though.
Law may be a bit harsh, but believe me it’s not fun to have to look back on something and feel like a fool because some jackass took advantage of you. The guy could have seriously hurt you.
I can’t imagine not decking someone for pulling that kind of shit. Live and learn. I would at the very least inform management of the guys reckless behaviour and get him thrown out.

Honestly. Helping every idiot on the planet is why there are 700lbs people eating better than most of the people on this forum…and they don’t even have to work. This is why there are bans on supplements that actually work.

Nuance is not your friend.
I have - and would in the future - put myself into dangerous situations when I thought another person’s safety was at risk. Very recently while walking my dog late at night I saw two very suspicious guys creepily following a girl who was not paying attention and was talking on her telephone. I interjected myself into the situation.
That is different from a drunk driver pulling up next to me and saying: “Hop in and serve as my navigator. Otherwise, I won’t be able to find my way to the bar I’m looking for.”
In the first case, I was willing to help someone who might be a victim. In the second case, I would have been an accomplice to a wrongdoer.
By your logic, if I didn’t serve as navigator for the drunk driver, I’m an asshole. Wow.
If you seriously cannot see the difference between risking your safety to protect someone who is innocent; and from jeopardizing your well-being because someone has made a foolish and dangerous choice, then you are a moral and mental defective.

Please tell me how I misinterpreted what was posted?
Should I just read every “story” and assume there is so much else going on that I cannot possibly understand what happened?
The story seemed pretty clear: The OP saw someone struggling to do 1/8th squats with 495 lbs. That same person loaded 600 lbs. on the bar and asked the OP to spot him. The OP agreed to spot this person.
Does you need more facts before concluding that this was a really stupid move?
What additional facts are required before one can conclude that what the OP did was foolish?

Please, um, pretty please, tell me that this picture is a fake?
It does not have to be true you know, just tell me?
Well think what you want, I knew he couldn’t do the weight tried to persuad him to atleast use safer equipment to try it and then stood behind him with the intent to help should he need it. I’m guilty of either being too nice or a sucker oh well I’ve been called worse. But anywho here is the update. After work I went back to the gym tracked down a member of management and explained what happened, and that I felt atleast partially responsible for having allowed the incident to take place in the first place and then offered to replace the bar. To my surprise the manager I found is in charge of purchasing and promised to not only replace the one in question but also another that has been missing an end for several weeks. He also thanked me for the info and for being stand up about it. Wow not what I expected! Very good news for the few of us who lift seriously there. Thats it!

Sadly, the picture itself is real. The rest of the common sense crap was shit I threw on. You see, we need to save the idiots…if you haven’t heard.
Just to dogpile on this thread… You saw someone who could only 1/4 squat 315 right? Then you actually offered to help this wonder of natural selection with almost twice as much weight! Do you think he would have tried it if you said no to the spot? You would rather have that weight bailed back on your legs(knees and god knows what else) rather than watch it crumple him? When I was in basic training your type was referred to as HERO… The preferred method for someone like this is to just laugh, and when he asks again just laugh louder, he’ll get the point.
