Gym Rant

Just need to vent, I walked into the gym today to find all metal dumbells gone, ok no big deal, but they were replaced with rubber dumbells, ok I’ll survive so I’m figuring since we got new dumbells they bought a full set like 5-150 or something, oh but no we got 2 set of everything from 5-40 then single sets to 100lbs!! man that just sucks. Anyway I’m just ranting cause I’m pissed and when I asked at the desk they looked at me like I was stupid or something, “no one needs more than 100lb dumbells” yeh that’s why dudes are duct taping 10lbers to the 100lb dumbells.

sorry for the rant

Ask them what they did with them. Maybe a good way to get a cheap set of nice dumbbells for your house.

That happened to me in Vancouver… well not all of it, but some of it. Anywayss, when I moved there, I went looking for a good gym - very hard to find (although the womens gym looked pretty nice)- I went in to a few gyms and they were 90% cardio and a free weight room the size of my kitchen… which is small.
And they also had no idea why anybody would ever need dumbells over 100lb. Granted the PT that showed me around weighed about 110lbs and was a dance choreographer… oh yeah… it was a dude also.

When I used to work at a gym, it was a world you work out at, the owners refused to get dumbells over 95 pounds it sucked because I used to do shrugs with 100’s back then, most gyms don’t like T-Men or T-Women we intimidate the clientel that only show up once every three months, they don’t want a person that works out more than 3 times a week it spoils all the money they make

I guess I’m lucky, “my” gym have dumbells up to 145 lb.

just got a idea to put on my list when i walk into a “new” gym that I would like to train at. When the salesperson, masked as a PT, sits me down to sign disclaimer papers (legal crap just in case i get hurt while on the tour) the first question I will ask is what is your heaviest plate and what is your heaviest DB.

Obviously nowdays it’s gonna be 45# plates. I would be only lucky if the average-joe commercial gym carries 25kg plates. I really like to lift with 100# plates. The DBs well go figure I’d be happy with hust 100# DBs, but lucky if they had up to 150# DBs.

Next would be questions about squat racks, pull up stations, dip bars, and a power rack. I’d be pushing it if I asked about DL platforms or a GHR apparatus, since it’s common knowledge that most commerical gyms or employess may not know what the hell I am asking about.

I am a man of simple pleasures and I would probably stop the sales pitch before I even hit the sales floor, get up out of the chair and thank the salesperson and head out the door.

How can anyone in their right mind say that a strong human does not need over (how many pound DBs was mentioned in the first post?) said amount of weight. Then again it’s the people who work at the gym that have to rack these heavy DBs onto the rack when they clean the supplies and take inventory. SO I guess thoughts need to go out to them too.

My old college weight room was a garut weight room so it only housed 50# DBs. So in protest I would do shrugs using two 45# bars loaded with desired amount of plates and do shrugs and Farmer holds. Since the room was small I had to refrain from Farmer walks, but I took up enough room just holding the bars. Got scolded by the work-study staff, but my point was made- they had some pretty weak facilities.

Out db used to only go up to 100 lbs. I was so happy one day when I saw that they had got a set of 120’s.

I went to thank the gym manager. He had a confused look on his face. Mabye cuz I was about 140 lbs. at the time?

Ask if they have a reverse hyper or a cambered bar.

They’ll most likely show you some sort of tricep kickback machine and an EZ curl bar.
