I didn’t even realize the difference between “low” and “high” bar position until I had lifted for years. I don’t understand how anyone can do low bar. I try and the bar falls off my back. I’ve always lifted high bar and I’ve never had issues with heavy weight. 500+ for reps is no issue and I’m not a huge guy to say the least.

Are you a very upright squatter? I’ve seen a few people that stay so upright that the bar position really doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of weight used.[/quote]

I have short limbs and a long torso. To give you an idea, I’m 5’9", but if I sit next to someone who’s 6’3-6’5", I usually stare eye to eye with him. Maybe that’s why?

I won’t say I’m skinny, but I can’t say that I’m really thick either. Not sure if I’m thick enough for low bar, but as people have stated, that’s not why or why not you can/can’t do low bar.

I’m honestly not sure, but I’m so used to high bar, it works for me, although is has crept a bit lower as the weight has gotten heavier, but not to lower-bar position.

Could someone do us all a favor and post picks of low & high bar position? That might help everyone visualize whats going on a bit better.

just do a google search the first site you go to will bring you to a pic.

high bar = above the shoulders, resting on the traps

low bar = about even with the shoulders

Hopefully this is big enough to see…

This is the best illustration of low bar that I’ve found (courtesy of Modi at Stronglifts.com)
