Some Loaded Carries Ideas and Q&A

Hi coach, i have limited space to do loaded carries at my current gym, approx 15feet of empty space. Would it be ok to do 15 feet walking forward and 15 feet walking backwards be ok for loaded carries?

Actually , the problem is that my gym doesn’t have what is needed to do some farmer’s , will propably stay with zercher and top deadlift walk with scapula retracted!
Appreciate the answer!

Would you ever superset a loaded carry and push exercise (i.e. bench then farmers walk)?

Yes I get that, but wehat is your question

I wan’t to ask you haw to superset a loaded carry with a lifting exercise?
For example which exercisse I can perform with overhead carry, which with farmers walk. Haw you do this?

Great information.

In case anyone wants to do Zercher carries like Thibs but doesn’t have a log, I imagine that a thick squat sponge around the bar (I have one for hip thrusts) would be the next closest thing, at least as far as positioning for the weight. I’ve done Zercher squats with and without the sponge, and it hits my core far more when I do them with it.

I’ts better than just the bar, but it’s not remotely as effective as with a log… even with a pad you can still close your arms quite a bit which puts the bar a lot closer to your center of mass and make it possible to hold the bar even if your back rounds forward. Your biceps do not have to work as hard either because of the position. It’s night an day difference.

It’s not complicated. Pick an isolation exercise that works a muscle involved in the carry. Start with the isolation exercise then do the carry.

Thanks for the reply  Actually some things are easier than they seem.
It is possible that you can find a moment to look at my topic - Dumbbell and Bodyweight Only Workout - #3 by justme78

great thread! been lifting every other day and each session will include a zercher carry or farmer walks! awesome exercises! you mentioned supersetting a carry with a lifting exercise. I have done that a few times. 70-80 meter farmer walks and supersetted those with v bar dip’s and even 3-5 rep explosive snatch grip high pulls. zercher carries supersetted with a press or an inverted row or a strict shrug with 3-5 hold at top. good stuff. increased my distance on the zercher carries to roughly 80 meters. insanity on the upper back and breathing! wish I started those years back. great YOKE/TRAPS builders no doubt

do you find sandbag carries to hit the abdominals in a similar fashion?

Yes, I actually wish I had bags to do carries. I will buy some eventually.

@CT do you have any tips for loading the bear hug carry as I find that carry hits the whole body very well

Here’s one carry I used today as an activation movement prior to deadlifting. Felt my core much more solid and responsive for the whole session.

Stayed light, it was just for activation didn’t want to cause any fatigue. Did the same thing yesterday but held the log overhead for upper body activation prior to pressing.

that looks great. how many activation sets you do?

We normally perform 3 activation sets

Hi Christian i have two quick questions for you When you perform the loaded carry for activation how heavy do you recomend we go? Also is there is a certian distance to use. Thanks

The goal is to turn everything on while not creating any fatigue that would negatively affect performance. That’s why I like the hanging KBs because the oscillation help turn everything on without having to use a lot of weight.

For example in the video the KBs are 16kg (about 35lbs) and when using weights we work up to about 75lbs per side (the log is about 40-50lbs)

Here’s one we did in a back/biceps workout. Imagine rowing the log through you as you walk. This is best done for longer distances. We did it for 40m but 60 or even 80 would work better.

Cool topic coach,

How do you stand on yoke walks? I’m thinking about buying an frame, but hear both good and bad stories about it. Have you worked with them? Is it worth the buy? Is it a exercise you would consider doing?

Thanks in advance!
