Solo Guitar Songs Worth Learning?

I think anything by John Frusciante is a good thing to learn. I love the way he plays, makes the guitar sound slippery, almost wet somehow.

My all time favourite is Randy Rhoades. I don’t know about the technical side of guitar playing, I’m just a singer. Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Maiden… hell just listen and play all of Maidens solos. Can’t go wrong there. I <3 Revelations.
I saw Maiden a couple of times on the '05 Ozzfest. The shows were unbelievable, but Adrian Smith has a few screws loose. There was a beach ball being thrown around the audience which ended up flying from the front row onto the stage.

It hit Adrian Smith on the head, at which point he looked up, flipped off and cussed out the guy who threw it, threw his guitar to the floor and stomped offstage. The band kept playing, completely uninterrupted by this episode, and a guitar techie had to follow Adrian out and talk to him to get him back onstage.

Django had his middle and ring fingers fused together in a fire. The result was that all of those magical solos that he played, he was doing with just his pinky and index fingers. While he was playing, those two fingers were said to be like snakes, criss-crossing over one another and sliding almost hypnotically around the fretboard…

Actually, it was his pinky and ring finger but they weren’t fused, they were paralized.

Ok seriously, Overkill by Colin Hay from the Scrubs soundtrack comes to mind…
Learned that song after seeing it on the show, actually

LOL, the “Betcha Can’t Play This” clip tossed me back to last year in college, when I used to get a ton of those on my Comcast On Demand.

Along with this “Lesson”:

first time I saw Buckethead play (a definite “what the fuck am I watching?” experience) which is what dragged me back into guitar.

Yeah, that video is pretty amazing, I remember actually meeting him, that was well quite interesting to say the least. Btw, only reason I used the Bethca can’t play this is because I’m in a Jag Panzer mood lately, and Chris Broderick is one of my favorite players right now.

I take correspondence lessons with Tom Hess :

If anyone’s looking to improve their playing immensely I’d recommend you give him a shot. His Student’s Forum is worth the price of lessons alone.

Learn every solo from Django Reinhardt. He practically wrote every lick worth knowing. Interestingly enough, he was not trained in music theory and could not even read or write–period. This man was a musician’s musician. He played rhythmically, harmonically, and melodically no matter what we was playing.

If you were to go and find every recording you could of this man and happen to come across two of the same pieces you’d notice that the solos were different–he never in his entire career played the same solo twice!

A few of the ones worth searching for (my favorites):
Dark Eyes (Yeux Noirs) – Dark Eyes, Amazing Guitarwork - YouTube

Djangology – Djangology - YouTube

Sweet Chorus – "Sweet Chorus" Clearwater Hot Club June 14 2006 - YouTube

Nuages – - YouTube

Minor Swing – - YouTube

PS Modern guitarists got nothing on Django.
Django, now we’re talk’n! I accually use a bunch of his licks even in my metal band. Not sologuitar though. Need I say he only played with 2 fingers! since he got caught in a fire as a kid.
I got a few gypsy jazz books. They use a complete different right hand technique to bring more volume out of the guitar. If I’ve never seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t believe it was possible.

Technically some of those guys are the best. I saw Bereli Lagrean (a guy who plays lots of Django stuff) one time and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life! I’m dead serious. It was at MI and half the guitar staff fell into depression. I’ve seen Yngwie, Vai, and hundreds more but Bereli absolutely blew my mind. F’d up thing about is I’ve got a video of him doing this shit when he was 13:0

http://www.lagrene.com/
Bunch of other stuff of him on Youtube.

I’ve been a serious student of Gypsy Jazz (Manouche) for a few years now and I cannot find any guitar players to be as proficient as some of the gypsies I have found on Youtube.

Here is one that could make anyone cry:

I have seen a bunch of Bireli footage and I can tell you he is the most technically proficient player I have ever witnessed. I am not really into the technical aspect as much. I would prefer to be able to play more laid back and melodically like Django.

Berelie, is a motherfucker!!! If you wan’t to an absolute badass WATCH THIS

Here he is a 13!!! Its depressing. I should switch to playing bass. LOL

And if thats not bad enough here he is on the violin!!

This ones good too. I love how he qoutes Flight of the Bumble Bee!!

Jimmy Rosenberg is crazy. I’ve seen this video before. A buddy of mine used to show everyone this on his Ipod.

Great to hear you play Gypsy jazz! What tunes do you play? All of me, Donna Lee, Cherokee, and There’ll Never be Another You are my favs to play over in that style. But for laid back tunes I like Bossas, Stella by Starlight and Blue and Green just to name a few although I’ll play whatevers thrown in front of me. I like to play melodically also.

I take jazz heads (melodies) or any melody (happy birthday, mary had a little lamb) and try to play them in different fingerings, octaves and keys all by ear. One of the best exercises you could do IMHO. But I also love to tear it up, lots of fun.

Just because its fast doesn’t mean its can’t be melodic and layed back (you probable all ready know this LIFTICVSMAXIMVS but some people don’t). Just listen to Charle Parker and of coarse Django. I love to jam with you.

Or tambourine!!

Thanx for all the vids and feedback. I would love to jam with anyone who is familiar with the standards. I am comfortable playing changes and prefer the old swing standards including most of Django’s.

My favorites to jam to are:
Honeysuckle Rose
Any Blues in a minor key
Bossa Dorado
Limehouse Blues
All the Things You Are
Summertime
Come Rain or Come Shine
Autumn Leaves

I really dig ballads too.

To boomerlu-

Thanks for the book recommendation, man. Unfortunately, I had to toss this up here, since my PM’ing is a little messed up and I can’t send any.

Anything by Leo Brouwer, Villa-Lobos or Ginastera.
Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is beautiful
If you wnat REAL old-school try Sor.
Segovia was an OG

Good tunes. Haven’t played Bossa Dorado
Limehouse Blues or Come Rain Come Shine but I could read them. I’m always down for some Autumn Leaves and All the Things you are.

Lol…I’ve seen Iron Maiden twice now also, but not on the Ozzfest tours. …I have no idea why Adrian Smith would have a ‘strop’ over being hit with a beach ball …haha. That’s not very metal is it lol…

I’m pretty sure had it hit Bruce Dickinson he’d be challenging somebody to a fight …he cursed out security for being hard on the fans at my show, held up his fist and said ‘Fuckin wankers…I’ll give you THIS’…

I was doing it for weeks in my best accent anytime anybody pissed me off. I have to say over the years those guys are still pretty damn energetic and fit, and as musically sound as ever.

Up the Irons!

Big Rhoades fan here also, a childhood hero, even named my dog after him. Worked my ass off learning that big Suicide Solution solo on tribute. Wish I could still play that, too much jazz lately. Gotta say I learned bunch Maiden solos in high school also. Power Slave, Aces High, Alexander the Great were a few. I had an Iron Maiden tab book that explained every solo. Really helped me out.

Being on the road can take its toll on people, but that sucks none the less. I don’t like playing in 2 guitar bands let alone 3.

I bet your right. Did you hear about the time he picked a fight with Ozzy? Sharon got right in there and cursed him right back. Good woman. Ozzy didn’t do much of coarse.

Wasn’t Dickinson an Olympic fencer?
