So Mr. X Goes To The Gym

Still have enough energy after the romantic evening for a hard workout the next day? I quess the marathon sessions of youth are gone.
Hope you had a good evening. Nothing like a little time together. Kinda what it’s all about.

LOL… yeah, I know what you mean… Dinner was a total surprise to the wife, there were no left-overs if that tells you anything.

But I did make it to the gym today, and I was able to get my youngest son to go with me!
We did my normal w/o except I didn’t super-set anything.
He did real good, struggled with his form a little bit, but overall he did great.

My w/o…

BB Back Squats
185x5x5 (a personal best on the squats!)

Dips
25x5x5 (had a 25# plate on a weight belt)

Bent-over BB Rows
100x5x5

Skull Crushers
70x5x5

Standing BB Curls
85x5x5

Hanging leg raises

I told my boy that I wasn’t going to push him beyond what he was comfortable doing (or capable of doing) because I want him to learn form, technique, and to gain strength, and I want him to continue going with me. Heck he’s ‘only’ 15. I also mentioned that if he gains strength, it will only help him become a better DH racer (Downhill Mountain Bike). I think he listened. (shock)
Keep on rockin…

PR IN THE SQUATS! ROCK ON!

FIFTEEN YEAR OLD LISTENING TO YOU! ROCK… waittasecond… that’s gotta be a misprint.

Dinner was a huge surprised and very, very nice. He made huge points.

ROTFLMAO!
No, that wasn’t a misprint… I think he’s realized (finally) that maybe the old man DOES know a thing or 2. LOL!

Bench press today, gonna use a spotter and see what I can do.
Rock On!!!

Damn… I kicked my own butt today. I maxed out on every one of my weights to where I was a-quivering on my last rep.

BB Bench press
Used a spotter and kicked a$$!
185x5x5
On my last set of 5 my spotter had to assist on the last 3. But what is important is this is a PR. Especially since I pushed out nearly 25 of those babys! (AND I jumped up 25# from last time!)

Super-set
Romainian DL
185x5x5
Standing Military Press
90x5x5 (on my last set I had to ‘hop’ it up past my sticking point, but kept my form, didn’t allow my back to arch backwards)

Super-set
Standing Calf Raise
275x5x5
Upright Row
90x5x5 (man the traps were burning by the end!)

Tri Pressdown
85x5x5

All in all, I was extremely happy with todays w/o. I will probably stay at these weights next time so I can do everything without getting stuck.
Rock hard, lift heavy!

dont get ur hopes up u think hes listening but he just wants you to stop talking  figured id give you the compliment on here so everyone can see. your bustin balls in the gym lately and you can tell. your arms are gettin all those freaky veins the girls dont like! BADASS! keep at it man im proud of u! and u need to get the lil rat doin some light weight and mass reps so he cant move the next day! that will be fun to see. so oh yeah by the way where we goin on vacation to?!

LOL! Yeah, you’re prolly right!
And trust me, that was just a warm up for him… he wanted to work up a sweat and feel it… he’ll know next time that he worked out… in a good way of course!

Thanks! Well, there is ONE girl that likes it… the important one!

Got spring break off? I do…
I was thinkin’ someplace with some great (good) Mtn Bike trails… maybe Moab again??? Or maybe someplace closer…
We’ll see…
Peace dude… Rock on!

Way to go. Nothing like a good performance to get you fired up for the next session. Great lifting, too:)

Humph… I’m not so sure I was ready for this session…
I might not have let myself recover as much as I needed, or I might have just tried pushing myself a little too far too quick.

Chin-ups
5x5 at body weight (last set I wasn’t getting quite as high as I should have been, but it’s better than where I started!)

Super-set
Decline DB Press (with a spotter)
80(x2)x5x4
40(x2)x25x1 (this is where I may have pushed myself too far. I had trouble getting past my sticking point and I just didn’t have the energy to keep perfect control. And it didn’t help that my wife was spotting for me and something she said got me laughing… it’s impossible to push weights when you’re laughing!!! So for my last set I dropped the weight by half and rep’ed to exhaustion… I got out 25 tho.)
Standing Hammers
40(x2)x5x5

Super-set
Seated Calf Raises
125x5x5
ISO Leg Curls
40(x2)x5x5

DB Lunges
40(x2)x5x5 (each leg)

I don’t know if it was because I had a cold all last week, and I’m still not totally over it, or because I pushed myself too far too fast… but today just wasn’t as good as I hoped for. I think I’m going to drop back down a notch for next time and see how I feel. Call it a learning curve.
Rock on!

Damn Mr.X, you’re smokin’ those PRs. Fantastic job! Rock on Buddy.

Thanks DZ, I’m really happy about my numbers!

I hate getting old…
I’ve been having this nagging pain in my inside hip joint and today it really caused me some problems. During my squats, on both the down and the up at about the midway point, it would almost make me want to stop. Damn! I think I’m going to have to drop the weight and see if that helps. Maybe try less weight and more reps for a while… just thinking out loud here…
Anyhow, todays w/o:

BB Back Squats
205x5x5 (a new weight for me, and if it didn’t hurt, it would have been fairly easy.)

Super-set
Dips
25x5x5 (25# plate hanging on belt)
Bent over BB Rows
110x5x5

Super-set
Skull Crushers
75x5x5
Standing BB Curls
85x5x5

Hanging Leg Raises
10x5

Since you’ve been going heavy have you still been doing your yoga? Haven’t seen it mentioned in a while. Don’t know if it will help your hip pain but for you old guys it’s probably real important to stretch.

Be careful of the “I’ll just work through it” mindset. Only other thing I could suggest is to make sure you’re not favoring one side more than the other. I catch myself pushing harder with my right leg on a lot of leg exercises.
Having said all that, your workouts and progress look great.

Old Guy, huh… why I oughtta… oh, wait a minute, I did say I hate getting old, didn’t I… LOL!

Yeah, I still do yoga on Saturdays. I haven’t been stretching as much during the week as I probably need to though. It’s strange, it’s not so much a muscle pain as a pinching (for lack of a better description)… I suppose I could be suffering a minor inpingement in the hip…
I’m taking the wife away for the weekend for her birthday and will be taking it easy, so that should be a good test and will see if it feels better Monday.
And you’re right, I do need to watch how I lift, I did find myself putting more stress on my right leg during my squats, and I feel it today!
I know better than trying to ‘work through’ the pain… but knowing better and actually doing it are sometimes at odds with each other… but that’s one good thing about being an old guy, I’m slightly smarter than when i was younger! LOL I mean, a pain I would have had for 2 days now lasts 2 weeks! :frowning:
Keep on Rockin’!

Well, had a real nice weekend, not to sound like a romantic (well, maybe just a tiny bit) but it was great to get away, just the two of us. Romantic walks on the beach, quiet drinks in front of the fireplace… shoot, I’m just a big teddy bear… (a wannabe Grizzly, tho! LOL!)

I have to admit, I didn’t make it to the gym today… I’m still dealing with that hip pain and I just couldn’t get motivated to go in, after work today it was just ‘killing’ me. I know… wuss! I have been stretching more so hopefully it will improve. I’m reworking my leg w/o so I can train without too much discomfort (I hope!). Problem is, it affects my DL’s, and Bentover Rows, and just squatting down to pick up the weight… well, time will tell, if there’s no improvement then it will be “Howdy, Doc. Say I’ve got this pain…” :frowning:

Upper body next couple of days, so no excuses, right?
Keep on rockin’.

I’m picturing From Here to Eternity, in cold, wet Washington, not Hawaii, of course.

I agree if you keep having the pain you might want to see someone about it. Right now it sounds like it’s limiting a lot of your workout. With your history I’d definitely be cautious. That won’t make you a wuss. If you tell the doctor you have an ohie booboo, that makes you a wuss.

The weather was great, but it was TOO COLD for any scenes from ‘From Here
To Eternity’… LOL! We had to re-enact… oh never mind…

And if I told my Dr. I had an owie-booboo, I think HE’D kick my butt!

I guess my big fear is for the doc to tell me I’ve got arthritis in my hips now…
That’s the last thing I need. >:(
Oh well, I’ll just keep workin’ on it and see how I do.

Keep on Rockin’!

I’d take a couple days off, then if it still troubles you then tell the doc you’ve got a boo boo. Anyway, that’s what the doc told me a while back about my shoulders and he was right, pain went away mostly.

Have I ever mentioned this is a great site???
I’ve been researching my hip pain, and and found (what I believe to be) the answer right in the ‘Strength Sports’ forum. It linked me to this article; http://www.elitefts.com/documents/healing_the_hips.htm
So I will be following the suggestions presented by Eric Cressey in regards to my lifting.
We’ll see how it goes…
Keep on Rockin!

That was a really good article. Now if I can just remember to think about pinching something between my butt cheeks and not the cute little thing in the gym I’ll be all set.

Have you found a good on-line source for the foam rollers? I keep reading about these and think I’ll give them a try.
