Snatch-Grip High Pulls from a Deficit

Coach, are you a fan at all of doing SGHPs from a deficit to be even more bang for buck due to the extra leg involvement?

I know CP was big on doing snatch deadlifts from a deficit but I was wondering if this could be applied to the high pull.

I am not. I don’t even like the SGDL from a deficit.

  1. Most people lack the mobility to maintain a proper position when doing SGDL from a deficit (same would happen when doing SGHP from a deficit)

  2. Unless you are extremely explosive and very technically efficient, your high pull will not be much higher than 50-60% of your SGDL. As such, the first pull is not going to overload the legs significantly, even if you lengthen the range of motion.

  3. VERY rarely trying to ā€œget more bang for your buckā€ by combining two exercises into one ever works. It normally ruins both exercises. The clean and push press would be an exception, but it is really two lifts done back to back, not a hybrid.

Do it if that amuses you. And the placebo of thinking that you invented something great might make it ā€œworkā€. But it’s something I would never ever EVER recommend.
