Snapper's Strength Sojourn

Snapper, I have alot of doctor friends. Trust me, your doctor LOVES you because you are taking an active role in your own recovery, and you aren’t a dumb-ass who has refused to take care of your body for years and now expects the doctor to magically fix your own foolish neglect.

Step away from the squat rack. It isn’t ripe yet, despite your awesomeness.

I think Snap likes being tied up with bands. This isn’t the first time we threatened her…

I just popped in to say…yikes! that is a tasty new avatar.

Sorry for the SAMA moment. Good luck with the shoulder.

I really love that avi picture. Good choice.

How is PT going? Are you getting more ROM for less pain yet?

PT is going. My ROM is great. But I have zero strength. I still can’t even lift my arm up unaided. And that is really starting to mess with my mind and my mood. I have to question whether I will ever be able/should return to competitive powerlifting. Putting that joint being held together with five anchors under maximal stress at my age . . . is it a recipe for disaster? Can I re-gain the confidence in my body’s abilities to push it to the max and beyond? Questions to ponder.

So I’m thinking about training for a race. Just something short distance in the September time frame. Something to give me focus and take my mind off the weights for the time being. I know some of you are runners. Will you all punish me if I do a race? Stoning? Tar and feathering?

And thanks for the compliments on the avi.

Is this a round-a-bout way of asking for a spanking?

I don’t believe that anyone here has an issue with running- look at Alisa and Cal - nobody is spanking them for running (other things maybe but not running)…

And the avi is excellent!

When it comes to bodies, there are only two options. 1. Use it up; or 2. Rust it out. You aren’t built for option number two.

If you love to powerlift (and you do) and your doctor gives you the green light, then powerlift. Just do it smart, and you’ll be good.

Running isn’t inherently interesting to me. But I’d be willing to hear about it. Especially if you posted cute pictures of yourself in teeny running shorts.

Yeah, Soldog. A slap up side the head to stop my feckin’ whining.

Ahh Kimba. The voice of reason. I pick door #1, by the way. And yep. I will powerlift again.

Running isn’t inherently interesting to you because it’s SO DAMN BORING. Cute pics in running shorts. I’ll think on that.

Snaps - I run. I am not built for it and so I don’t post great times but I get it done. Running on a treadmill is akin to being a hamster in a wheel - I don’t have time for that. But running outdoors, in the fresh air, surrounded by trees and birds and whatever sights the season has to offer, is an almost meditative experience. I use the time to enjoy the outdoors, and also to daydream. Boring? Hell no.

My advice - find a 5K (maybe a 10K if you’re brave), preferably off-road, and go for it. As a 40+ I find off road is far kinder on my joints. Always a consideration if you want them to last as long as possible.

you gotta do what you gotta do!

Snapper, if you train fora 5k then you can incorporate a lot of short distance time stuff and get some sprinting in as well. Those are less boring well because they don’t last as long.

Wow. That is quite the question. I, for one, firmly believe that the human body is an amazing mechanism. So my answer to that is YES! You will re-gain confidence and your body will have no problems with the movements and the weight - with time you’ll get where you want and need to be.

Run Snapper run! With an avi like that, you can do no wrong.

running will give you endorphines which will help with your mood and attitude. Better mindset = better recovery. Plus you get to play outside, always a win. Natural Vitamin D.

Running is a sin.

And you know how RG loves sinners.

Ahh, I have a horrid confession, folks. I used to race 5Ks, 10Ks, and sprint triathlons. It was this that was the genesis for my starting to lift at nearly 40 years of age. My goal at the time was to get faster. But a funny thing happened at the start line at some race or another one day.

As I was awaiting the gun, I thought to myself: “Why the hell am I doing this? I just want to lift weights!” And hence I crossed to the other side. It does seem really, really blasphemous to even consider going back. But I GOTTA DO SOMETHING AND MY ARM AIN’T COOPERATING YET!

And PMPM. If RG gets wind of the fact that I’m thinking of lacing up rather than buying a pink squat suit he will kick my feckin’ ass right back into the cage. Shoulder or no shoulder. This has to be our little secret, my friend.

To close this post with a bit of good news: My PT promised I could try to lift 1-lb weights on Friday! Stengthening! Wish me luck!

Those 1 lb. weights better be pink ones.

If your 40 I’ll eat my inzer wrist wraps. Okay maybe not cause I kind of need those wraps but I’ll be freaking shocked.

1lb weights FTW!!

start eating Joe - snapper is a bit older than 40 if I remember right

Uhh, weeks away from 45 actually. I could use those wrist wraps, Joe . . .

Oh. And an update. I ran yesterday. No way. Hate it.

But exciting news! I was able to do 2 x 15 bench press with a broomstick minus the broom part. No problem with range of motion. Still can’t get my shoulder rotated to hold the bar to squat, though. Just a matter of time.
