Snapper's Strength Sojourn

Tried some pistol squats to a low chair tonight (to avoid falling on said shoulder should I lose my balance). I did them like a box squat with a full pause. These are quite hard! I’ll eventually lower the target until I no longer have one.

Yes to muscle memory. Yes to smart recovery. Loving the forthcoming challenge of chasing down my old numbers and eventually blowing by them.

I’m fascinated by pistol squats! Only because I don’t do them, but wish I could!

Look at you, unearthing all the exercises that your injury can’t keep you from! Pistols are great and awful all at once. Do you notice a strength imbalance? My left is significantly weaker and balance is worse.

I didn’t notice a strength imbalance, Kimba. I will pay super close attention to that when I try these again on Thursday. I’ll go lower, too.

No training today. But shopping! REI sale. One of my fave places. Took loads of clothes into the dressing room and realized I couldn’t try most of them on because I can’t lift my arm. How funny [stupid] is that? I did end up with two really cute sporty summer dresses that will look fab with my combat boots. [Don’t ask me how I got into these other than the fact that I had to go to contortionistic proportions.]

As an aside, the goldfish was found dead in his (her?) bowl this morning. It was a short life since we acquired said fish on May 8 at the school carnival. Upon the discovery, my daughter burst into tears and blamed me for killing it. Why are mothers always the scapegoat? I’m not perfect, mind you, but I can honestly say that I had nothing to do with that fish’s death.

sorry about the goldfish and the scapegoatishness, but it’s in our job description (parent)…

You gonna set back your recovery trying on clothes???

I’m gonna need a picture of you wearing a summer dress and combat boots. Having difficulty with the concept.

No strength imbalance would mean I am totally jealous of you. That is a big problem of mine that is seriously holding up my squat progress.

I second that - and thumbs up on the pistols. I can hardly do 1 one my best leg. I need to work on my balance.

wow!!
I just caught up with this, when I saw your av pic.
Sorry to hear about your injuries

It looks good- bruising is draining well
Im sure it continued to put on a show of goriness.

and it is awesome that you are so motivated to train and rehab
best way to be as a patient.

I have avoided any kinds of surgery and actually regret
not having my collar bone done when I busted that
sleeping and getting dressed where challenges.

do you know if you will have to have the hardware removed?
or will it stay

for exercises for your lower body when your back
you could try doing belt squats

you can use a dip belt loaded up with a big db or plates,
and stand on two benches or boxes, great way to not load the shoulders and spine.

ps pistols are fun.

x3 on both.

I tired doing pistols a couple of weeks ago and ended up looking like an SNL skit.

I’m excited about getting better on the pistols. Thanks for that suggestion (some time ago), Kimba.

I also really like the idea of squats with a weighted dip belt. I can totally see myself doing that [once I’m permitted].

All the hardware in the shoulder stays. I think the surgeon said that the screws (anchors?) dissolve within two years. Must find out more about what substance is strong enough to anchor a tendon/muscle under tension yet melt away eventually. I ask a lot of questions, and I don’t think surgeons are used to that. I called just the other day to get a copy of the complete operation report. I’m interested and my [future] physical therapist asked if I could get my hands on it. I gather from the response I received and the paperwork I had to fill out to get a copy of my own medical files that it’s not a common request.

I’m wearing one of the dresses today, so I’ll get a pic. I’m home with sick kid #2. [Sick kid #1 was home from school last Thursday/Friday.] This one’s old enough to leave for a spell, so I’ll get a good walk in today.

snap- not only is requesting your operation report an uncommon request, its usually one of the first steps of a lawsuit. so, yeah, they’d be a little wary. they should have known by now that you’re interested in what happens to your body, though.

Dress-n-boots.

^ I like your style!

Asking questions is GOOD!

not the same, but I’d always go in with a list for midwife when I was pg w/#2…she was always impressed and my appts usually lasted an hour!

Anyway, it’s your body right?!

I would totally wear that dress. Super cute. The boots? Nope. They will be taking my favorite slides with the 3.5 inch wedge heel and a little platform in front out of my cold dead hands.

HAHA! I’ll probably be that person wrestling those slides out of your cold unconscious but not dead hands.

But dress and boots do look cute on you Snap!

And since we’re asking, when you finally get around to the weighted squats with belt, video please…I’d like to see that.

Good question re: dissolvable hardware…what can that be made of? (can probably google this but am lazy)

Tres cute Snap! I like the look. It has it’s purpouse, like hiking. Kimba: you can’t hike in 3 inch heels. Even with french blood. We’re strongheaded not crazy.

I hate hiking with a burning passion, so that particular problem has never come up.

Whew, finally caught up in here. Snapper, I’m so glad to hear that your surgery went so well, that your spirits are up, and that you’re listening to the pros and not pushing it too hard. Also, I’m not at all surprised that you’ve been keeping really active in any case - your determination is going to make this recovery go really well, I’m sure!

Re: Loss of strength/musculature - assuming you don’t go on some crazy diet (and given your metabolism and activity level, I don’t see that happening), you should be able to maintain a lot of your musculature. And the strength will definitely bounce back fast once you can get back to resistance training.

Your scars/bruising and bad-ass, btw.

No crazy diets planned for me, Blue. I’m not really the crazy diet type.

Thanks for all the feedback regarding loss of strength/musculature. While the atrophy in my affected arm is already a bit alarming, I know I can re-gain what I had. Actually, the process will be tres fun, since gains are so exponential at first.

I’ve just been walking a lot lately. It’s that time of year here in Colorado. I plan to do the Bolder Boulder 10K race on Memorial Day. Just walking since the running would be too jarring to the shoulder. It’s a fun race, with lots of bands and food (bacon every year) along the way.

Haven’t been in the gym since Monday. Honestly, it’s kind of hard for me to be around weights right now since I can’t touch 'em. I know I sound crazy, but I just get this angsty feeling in my stomach looking at DBs and barbells right now.

I changed my avi to something more . . . pleasing. I’m sure you’re all sick of looking at [and hearing about] my bloody shoulder. Bloody in the British sense, that is.

Thanks for the continued support, all. Like many things in life, you only realize how much you miss it when you don’t have it.

mmm, bacon and cool bands…sounds like a great weekend!!
