Snapper's Strength Sojourn

Welcome back! and still wishing you the best outcome from your rehab!

glad to see you are back; i echo nlmain in that i cannot believe you were doing what you were doing with all that damage. sheeesh…and I whine about some popping here and there. how did that not hurt?

The tear off the bone happened at the meet. It did hurt. The other tears had been there. I tuned out the pain and did not communicate it to my coach. Obviously, that was stupid. I won’t do it again.

heal up fast ! that sounds like a vicious injury, i’ll be sending good convalescence vibes

Its great to hear from you. I was beginning to wonder if they’d killed you, but thankfully no. When you tear something, you REALLY DO IT UP.

Way to go with the smartness! I did, however, get a chuckle out of the mental image of you on the spin bike four days post-op. Such a shocker. Not.

Can i sign your sling?

I’m so waiting for a PT story from you. You’ll be able to be the bitchy smartass that I couldn’t when I was doing my observation hours.

Just catching up in here. Welcome back! that is some glorious bruising. I’m glad to see your immediate recovery went so well. Good work being super healthy and able to bounce back from surgery.

Hey K! Glad the surgery went well.

Saw the surgeon today. Was dressed in gym clothes because my PLAN was to head to the gym and jump in some machines for lower body work after my appointment. You know, like leg press, seated calf, leg extension. That mellow stuff. Well, bottom line is that I’m doing really well considering I now have three anchors and six nautical ties inside my shoulder. BUT there will be no lifting AT ALL for six weeks! I asked the surgeon how strong the gear was in my shoulder and he responded: “Not strong enough for whatever you have in mind.”

So I’ll be walking and riding the spin bike for awhile. Dropped in on my physical therapist to tell him it would be two to three more weeks before I would be visiting. I plan to be a good patient, CBear, not a smartass bitch.

6 weeks isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of life!

He obviously has your number.

Take heart. You’ll still be the strongest cardio bunny in your gym.

Hmm I’m not sure why doing some leg extensions and stuff would hurt your shoulder but I guess the idea is not to stress the body as a whole because it’s healing. I was prohibited from exercising for two weeks after getting laser eye surgery for that reason.
Best thing is just enjoy the time off!

Oh I’m sure you’ll be an awesome patient. Just that you’ll be ABLE to say (if it happens), “that exercise isn’t the best way to do that, instead, how about ________.” If the PT is as awesome as your surgeon, you won’t have to. Which, really, is the way it should be.

I can haz anchor?

I think I’ve got a good physical therapist, CBear. He’s worked with a host of professional athletes and, as I’ve mentioned before, his facility is essentially a gym.

I just finished with the two shoulder exercises that I’m allowed to do: slight external rotation with elbow at waist and bentover pendulum swings. I feel slightly nauseated doing these. Makes me nervous. It really feels like someone chopped my arm off and sewed on a different one. Already, it looks like I have no musculature. Funny how long it takes me to build it and how quickly it disappears.

No lower body lifting, Cal, because my surgeon wants no tension in my shoulder. He claims that one tenses the whole body when lifting. And I believe he’s right.

Did I mention I’ve been walking a ton? And where I live (high elevation hilly terrain), walking is actually exercise.

Yay! I’m glad to hear you’re well and recuperating AND listening to the professionals. Very good.

Agreed on the tensing of whole body - something I soon realized when doing pullups with the hammie.

Um…thanks for the visual and frankenstein metaphor…gag. They couldn’t have put a gaget arm on you? Think of all the possible accessories raises eyebrows

Good on you with the walking! I bet that is exercise up in the mountains - how do you guys breathe up there? Jk…not really.

I pulled my calf doing deadlifts. And yeah, hammies seem to get involved in a lot. I have sciatica so I feel the bloody thing doing a lot of exercises.

Hi There

Glad you surgery went well…trust me time will fly, it has been almost 2 months since my op and only doing ROM exercises atm…

I know exactly what you mean!!! Stay positive you will heal quickly !

Thanks, Damo. Truly, I’m doing awesome. Can’t wait till I’m doing range of motion movements!

Since having the surgery, I keep running into people who have had rotator cuff surgery or know someone who has. Just today in Napa Auto Parts a guy approaches me:

Him: “Rotator cuff?”

Me: “Yep.”

Him: “Well, I had a 98% thickness tear 1.5 years ago [very proud].”

Me: “Yeah, well mine was 100% plus additional horizontal and vertical tears in the retracted flap.”

Funny. Like it’s bragging rights or something.

Winning in any form is as necessary as breathing for us competitive types.
