Snapper's Strength Sojourn

So sorry to hear that kpsnap. Taking it easy and giving the shoulder a chance to heal is smart though, shoulder surgery is scary!

I seem to recall reading some strong arguments in favor of continuing to train the non-injured side. [/quote]

my 2nd fiance ripped his bicep tendon off his elbow, continued to train his legs as much as possible, and his other arm. healed faster than the surgeon thought possible. neato.

you poor, stircrazy lil snapper. taking up a hobby in the meantime? theres no shame in pink dumbells when theres an injury involved. get better and come back a badass.

sorry to hear about the injury, snapper. a speedy recovery i wish you. i suspect you will continue to train the non broken parts like a bad ass.

shit - sorry to hear that Snap. Time to rest, eat, heal and work on what you can do. We still want you to hang around you hear?!?

Unilateral training. I’ll have to look into that, Kimba.

Second fiance, eh Cbear? How many have you chewed up and spit out?

See? I get mean when I’m not seriously training. You guys are going to stop inviting me to the party.

Actually, I can’t wait to get back in the gym on Monday to punish myself in the cage.

Snapper, I just saw this product announcement and thought of you:

They were mentioning it at the meet, so it would be a USAPL meet. I don’t have any other information about it.

Keep your chin up!

My chin is up! Thank you PMPM. Attitude is everything. Let me know if you hear any more about that meet.

And thank you, Kimba. I will research. I so appreciate your support, guys.

I lifted today for the first time since the meet. I learned that one uses the shoulder more than I would have expected when squatting and doing good mornings. Pretty sad numbers.

Squat
8/45
8/65
5/85
5/5/100 Shoulder feels tenuous and unstable even at this weight

Good mornings
8/65
3/8/85

A) Hamstring Curl
3/5/90

B) Leg Extension (single leg)
3/8/40

That is it.

There is certainly going to be a period of adjustment where you test the limits of what your injury will allow you to do. Keep slugging!

Personally, I would’ve been happy with those GMs.

x2

The important thing is that you’re still doing something. Staying active is going to make your recovery way more smooth.

Hey Snap, Just catching up!

Way to effing kill it at the meet. Broken records are super impressive! You da shit! (as we say out east)

I’m so sorry to hear about your shoulder - I really, truly am. But it sounds like you got a handle on the situ, mentally and physically, so I’m REALLY glad to hear this.

My injury was really difficult for me to deal with because mentally I was a wreck, scared, frustrated, plus I didn’t know how to deal with injury. All this to say, it was basically a lesson in patience and learning to fucking chill out.

I agree with others, definitely stay active, but also don’t be afraid to take it easy and not do anything at all - i guess, you know, feel it out. I will say though that maybe it was the nature of my injury, but I found the healing process was in itself pretty tiring, and I am just now building up my stamina.

Sorry for the hijack - Maschy is prone to sentimentality, and I feel for ya. If you want to rant/vent you got my ear.

Heal up quick!!

No worries about me staying active. Lifting is my sanity and hugely important to me, Maschy. Actually, I’ve been walking a bunch lately, which is exercise where I live (high-elevation hills).

Wednesdays are usually bench + upper body accessory days for me. So I’m feeling sorry for myself right now knowing I can’t do that tomorrow. I guess I’ll try to deadlift instead and see if my shoulder will cooperate. I absolutely hate not being able to train upper body. I worry that my arms will return to their pre-lifting state [SKINNY]. GASP!

My shoulder seems to be hurting less and less. It “catches” regularly, though, at unpredictable times. And, damn, that really hurts. I’m trying to train myself to not audibly wince. I also have very little strength in that arm. Literally cannot lift and hold my arm waist-high in front of me for more than a few seconds. Truly bizarre.

I need a new goal. Badly. It will be awhile until I can chase after those 10 pullups I was eyeing!

1 armed pullups.

I know, that probably would still hurt the shoulder, but I couldn’t resist!

Catching up–sucks about your shoulder Snapper! Keep sane and in the gym, it will only help you once you’re healed up. Great lifting in your meet though, despite it all.

As for a new goal…hmm. One-armed deadlifts, one-armed pushups, grip work (one hand only I guess), turkish getups (would that work with your shoulder?), DB snatches, side presses, one-armed DB benching, etc.

Don’t worry, you’ll own those pink dumbbells in no time!

I am just catching wind of the dismal news from the ART guy, good to hear your shoulder is hurting less though. I am glad you are able to do squats, and i hope deads pan out alright tomorrow. On the bright side, this recovery mission will be a learning experience. I fully expect to injure myself at some point in my lifting career and I hope i handle it with the resilience and optimism you have shown so far. Is this your first serious lifting related injury?

I’m not feeling resilient and optimistic right now. Had a shitty evening in the gym. Actually had to ask a guy to lift the bar out of the cage for me to use for deadlifts. Oh, the shame.

Deadlifts did not go well. Was doing a set of 5 x 175 when I felt a pull in the hammie on the second rep. Ahh shit. I just put the bar down. Don’t need more trouble with injuries. It feels okay now, a little tight perhaps. After I unloaded the bar, a[nother] guy came over and asked if I wanted him to lift the bar back into the cage. Further shame. But I said “yes.” I can’t clean a bar right now.

So then I did 3 x 25 decline situps so I can say I’m working my abs.

Umm, yes, Owlie, I’ve had other injuries. Hammie, back, ongoing shoulder. This is probably my worst, though. Powerlifting is hard on the body. And I’m not so young. But it’s sooooo worth it for me.

I understand being frustrated with your trips to the gym while you’re dealing with this injury, but I hope you don’t let it get you too down. It’s still so soon after your injury, it will get better!

I predict that when you come back all healed and strong you will have like a week of PR’s happenin in a row. And then you’ll need the whole lot of us to foam roll ya.

which we will gladly do. any stretching or manipulating of the ksnap body that i get to help with is ok by me!

Well, OK that could’ve gone better. But what I did NOT hear you say was that the actual act of deadlifting aggravated your shoulder. Awesome!
