Those who can, do. Those who can’t, coach or ref.
Just kidding. Don’t think I’m ready to be a ref. Although I’m neurotic like one.
Only asked about the “up” vs. “back” because I don’t know jack shit about sumo. My coach says my form is fine. Feels wildly unnatural to me.
I AM NOT CUTTING NOW. It was just an idea for the future. I guess the thing is that I’m sensitive about how little I lift, even when I’m “strong.” So I think, “Gee, if I only weigh 105, then a 210 DL is double my bodyweight.” A 210 raw DL is cake for me when healthy. It kind of sucks being small in this sport.
Snapper - We are ALL sensitive about how little we lift in relation to our size. Let’s not even talk about age.
Don’t cut unless you are going the body building route.
You have my permission to chow down.
Boy. I’ve actually thought of you when using this machine (which I rarely do) since it does require that same knee-pressing-out strength. I hold each rep in the out position to make it more taxing. Would it translate into less knee cave for you? How 'bout you experiment and let us know. Since I don’t tend to have knee cave issues, I’m probably not the best to give advice.

I am on a mission to fix my knee cave, and am willing to try anything. It can’t hurt, right? Holding the rep on the out position is a good suggestion.

I felt the same way at first with sumo, but eventually it felt more comfortable. Then yesterday when I started to pull, I set up sumo without thinking. I like to train both though, and I haven’t pulled sumo in a meet yet. I really like your choice of exercises on your squat dead lift day, especially the Good Mornings. Ya don’t see a lot of folks doing GMs.
Coming along. Excited to put the big wheels on for next week’s DL session. Leaving tomorrow for western Colorado for my daughter’s first competitive gymnastics meet. She will compete in floor, bars, beam, and vault. I may bore you all with a vid or two of her performance next week. After the meet, we’ll head to Glenwood Springs, a giant hot springs pool. Should be a relaxing weekend.

How old is your daughter? She must be serious about it to be competing.
My 10 year old can’t decide if he is going to be a pro baseball or soccer player. Not sure about pro, but if he is good enough for a university scholarship that is fine by me. Actually, if it sets up a life-long healthy lifestyle and helps with smart choices when he hits his teens that is a complete win.
Wish your daughter best of luck in her competition. Being a competitive gymnast is a huge time commitment. It’s a wonderful sport though. I did it for years and still love to watch it.
I looove the new avatar. You have great arms, abs and everything.
My daughter is nine. O, I’m not surprised that you were a gymnast. You have such a lithe build. I so often watch the gymnasts and think what great powerlifters they would be. Small and compact and oh, so strong.
You know, Soldog, the DLs don’t hurt my shoulder one bit. Just today I realized how little I’ve been thinking about my shoulder. And for a long time, I had a very strong “guarding” reflex to protect my shoulder. But that’s going away. I really think I’ll be able to come back strong if I can tackle some mental issues. Very nervous to bench and seem to have pain doing so. But I’m not sure if it’s “real” pain. Or if it’s just tightness from lack of use. Or weakness. Hard to explain.
I’ll head to yoga tomorrow morning and some light upper body rehab work before I leave town for the weekend.
In the words of the Mayor of Rhodestown “we never go down a weight class. if you are over 4 ft tall and male, you should lift at 308”. so, up a weight class for you!
not to hijack, but kimba, what helped my knee cave is taking my warmups with a band around the knees. fighting the band on the warmups made it so that “knees out” on the work sets was natural. Try that if you haven’t already.
your doing a great job recovering snap and I think we all need to remember thayt OUR determination and dedication to what ever we do creates a positive enviroment for our children to grow and strive in. Thats just one more reason to do the very best at everything we do.
