I too would like to know the reason why the majority of people on this site seem to be very restrictive of carbs in their diets. This may be a dumb comment, but my understanding has always been that carbs are a better energy source than protein and fat. Would someone please correct me?
Nobody heavily involved in fitness relies on protein for energy.

Are carbs a “better” source of energy than fat? Hard to say. There are people who do great on low to moderate carb, moderate fat diets and there are people who do great on low fat, high carbohydrate diets.

Pick an approach, stick with it, and see how you do and feel.

Thanks for the input. I guess my reason for that question, is that I am an endurance athlete (rowing) and wonder if endurance athletes have ever done well on low carb diets.

Look up these researchers in Pubmed: Volek, Horvath, Hoppeler, Phinney, Berning, Noakes, Pitsiladis.

There’s a study by Rowland and Dowling on ultra-endurance and high fat diets.

Thanks, I will check these out.

I don’t cope well with many carbs. The only carbs I do eat (besides fruit/veggies) are Ezekiel bread, sweet potatoes, and oats, that’s usually post-workout only.

By the way, this meal contains MSG, canola AND soybean oil (omega-6s - better watch out), and 9 grams of sugar, which means that if I keep this up, I run the risk of croaking from coronary artery disease.
OMG nooooo. Don’t you know MSG is an exitotoxin? You’re gonna die soon. Hurry, get to a hospital. Wait, you’re prolly already at one.

Turkey Sausage and Rice. Hey, I’m eating cheap today back off. Again all 3 meals at work. Ate today for just under $5.

MMMMM. . . I win for the meal that is worst for you.

Actually this was my Saturday cheat meal this morning. Damn good too.

For some reason your new avatar makes me crack up every time I see it, I cannot take you seriously with that picture.

This?

I’ve had no problem maintaining muscle mass and strength and power on a vegan diet. While I’m no longer an athlete, I do like to think that I train pretty hard every day. A typical day for me looks something like this: bowl of oatmeal and a banana for breakfast, post-workout soy protein shake, Clif bar, two soy meat sandwiches and one-fourth cup of nuts for lunch, couple of pieces of fruit, huge salad with at least two to three types of beans, couple of cups of pasta with marinara sauce, fruit, pea-rice protein shake for dessert.

Guess what, guys? You can get jacked and strong as hell without ever eating a single animal product, just like my brother from another mother:

Don’t believe the hype, boys. It’s always funny as hell when some 140 pound “bodybuilder” is concerned with eating anything that might have traces of soy in it because he doesn’t want it to negatively affect his Testosterone levels. Uh, sorry pal, but you got many other problems to worry about.

I’ve carried around 245 pounds with approximately 11-12% body fat for many, many years now with no ill effects. If you guys saw how much soy I eat, well, let’s just say that I should be Roberta by now.

A section of an article from Alwyn Cosgrove interviewing NSCA Coach of the Year,
Robert Dos Remedios

There’s so many contradicting stories and studies out there. If you’re worried try an elimination diet and see how you respond.
^^^ That was in regards to soy and it’s test lowering scare. I don’t really eat soy (maybe in a granola bar here or there). It’s just for every study there’s another study contradicting it and they’re always backed by some top tier dude. Take the carb back loading and IF fads that are catching on for example.

Exactly.

It’s alright if my face makes you laugh. I guess that’s good.

Sorry, the first sentence where you said you were on a vegan diet threw me off.

First off, not trying to start anything but: “I’ve had no problem maintaining muscle mass and strength and power on a vegan diet”

Were you a vegan or did you just eat a lot of soy?
