All my life I’ve sweated profusely when training. Also, my sweat has always stung my eyes. I’d also notice that my camouflage clothing would show a white pattern after long marches, etc. I just figured this was a fact of life and always drank a lot of water when training and afterwards.
According to an article I recently read: “If your eyes sting when a drop of sweat gets in your eyes, you are losing too many electrolytes BECAUSE you have lost too much water. Your body must now shed the electrolytes (that keep you alive). They are getting too concentrated because of the loss of the water in your body’s effort to cool itself. Your electrolyte balance is now seriously disrupted, and even with the shedding of electrolytes, you will be at risk.” http://www.elitefts.com/documents/just_drink_water.htm
The author recommended using SmartWater. I thought this was a gimmick, but used a bottle during my last workout.
I felt immediately better the next day and have added this as a staple during workouts. Refreshed actually, in ways different from usual. (Like I noted, I hydrate extensively when training and afterwards, so it wasn’t a function of my not drinking enough water.) It seems to help quite a bit for recovery.
So if your eyes sting like mine do every time you do something that causes you to sweat a lot, you might want to pick up some SmartWater. (They sell it by the case at Trader Joe’s for a pretty good price.)

Did you try drinking water before training? Say a litre in the hour prior?[/quote]
Yes. I drink more water before, during, and after training than anyone I have ever met. I am the guy you will see with his t-shirt entirely sweat-soaked after a workout. Part of it is how how I train (I almost vomit - nasty dry heaving - during or after training at least twice a week), but part is also that my body just simply shreds crazy amounts of water through sweating.
After grappling, my shorts are so wet that I either have to wring them out before placing them in the dirty-clothes hamper, or I hang them up over the bath tub before putting them in the hamper.
According to the author I quoted (and I have no reason to doubt him), I lose a dangerous amount of water in my garden-variety workouts; worse, I have been doing this for decades.
After using SmartWater, I feel much fresher the next day. My muscles are not nearly as tight and I just feel lighter on my feet.
Admittedly, I imagine my post will be relevant to only a few guys. During army training I only noticed one or two other guys in my platoon who has the white-crust going on in their BDUs.

I will try that for football next year, its a bitch when you are wearing your helmet.

I remember that. It was awful. I would pour water over my face to make it stop.
What was worse was that my tae kwon do school was really strict. So you couldn’t rub your eyes or touch your hair in any way during class. So I’d just have to train with my eyes stinging.
I figured sweat in your eyes always stung. At least it has me from high school athletics on up to now. I took my mtb out for a nice grind in almost 90 degree weather the other day, and sucked thru a 2 liter camelback in an hour. The sweatband on my helmet was saturated within the first half, so the rest of the ride was brutal. Ill shit bricks if this stuff makes a difference. Is it tastless?? I cant stand those flavored water drinks.
I read the same article and my sweat always stings bad, I hate it becuase my cousin (who always buys into gimmicks) was telling me how Smartwater is better, I said water is water! Guess I was wrong… Do you use it for all your water or just during training?
It does taste good (like water) from when I have drank some.

I noticed this on a bunch of people during my military training. I assumed it was “salt” accumulated after a few hours. Also, I would never want to roll with you.
man, I feel your pain… the guys at football give me a hard time cause i bring a beach towel into the weightroom with me. no joke.
I’ve always just done the usual gatorade during lifting, the carbs really seem to keep me going strong for the full hour (possibly placebo) and keep cotton mouth at bay.
I sweat more than anyone I know. During wrestling practice sometimes I would have to change my spot in the room because the floor would get so wet that me and my partner couldn’t do anything without slipping and sliding all over the place, and my sweat always stings my eyes. Thanks for the article.

Hahaha, I hate rolling with you guys. There is one kid that is drenched after a light warm up and grabbing a wrist is like wrestling an oiled snake.

Yup. I still suck, but can escape crazy arm bars when going no gi. Since they don’t run fans or anything where I train (it’s like a sauna, especially when there was just a class that went), everyone sweats quite a bit.
When I finally got rid of all sweets and soda for good, I replaced it all with Gatorade, drinking it with more or less everything, and I’ve always had a really dry mouth and my sweat has stung my eyes like acid. I’m gonna try the switch and post results.
Just a bump, I tried this stuff before a hard judo workout with a 10 minute round of bodyweight conditioning drills afterwards, and it definitely made a difference. I felt much better after the workout. I usually drink just water, I don’t really like Gatorade because it always made me feel kind of sick.
Ok I just realized something about the new formulation.
It has more protein, slightly less carbs. Most importantly it has MUCH less Sodium and added Potassium and Phosphorus ergo it adds electrolytes! So you might not need SmartWater.
