1.3k to be exact.
The base version will retail for $1799, but it comes with a regular 80 gig HD.
Regular? It spins at 4200rpm. That’s decade-old technology.
It’s a sexy beast, but drive speed is a mighty serious bottleneck.
Not any slower than the macbook’s HD. If it is, you are probably sacrificing HD speed for form factor/battery life.
Honestly - how much of a bottle neck can 4200 RPM HD cause? The Mac Air’s are not designed for the power user.

Try running msconfig from the start window and see what’s running at startup. Get rid of all of that free trial crap that comes with the computer, and anything by Adobe (photoshop is ok), Real or Norton.
Some good ideas here.
Let me be more specific, and throw in a few pointers:
Disclaimer: The best option is in fact Linux. www.pclinuxos.com
I switched 14 months ago to PCLinuxOS and never looked back - after fixing everyone’s shitty Windows system for the past 10 years and getting tired of it myself. Anyways…
First off, Vista is a fucking disaster. It is simply a piece of bloated shit. Asking it to perform well is like asking a fat woman (or man) to do chin-ups. If at all possible, I would indeed go and install a fresh copy of XP (make sure it is SP2 - service pack 2 included). Right away life will be better.
If that is not possible, get rid of anything by Norton, also known as Symantec - also anything by McAffee. If you need an anti-virus program, AVG is free and it is excellent. It can be downloaded here:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff
Uninstall any programs you are not using!
Another thing - get rid of any unnecessary startup programs. Download Winpatrol - www.winpatrol.com - and deselect anything from the “startup programs” section which is not necessary. After Winpatrol installs, you will see a small black dog icon in the taskbar - Scotty the Windows Watchdog.
Also, use Firefox (www.mozilla.org) instead of Internet Explorer - much more secure and stable.
If still fucked up, PM me or post back to thread.

I enjoy reading your posts because you say ridiculous things that in your head, probably sound correct. I find it hilarious that your solution to this guys problem is install XP and buy more ram, neither of which need to be done. The solution to this problem does not call for spending money or upgrading anything.
Windows is an inferior OS that is meant for simple minded retards, too scared to branch out and learn something new for the betterment of yourself. God forbid you stray from the norm for 5 minutes. OMG, linux doesnt have a start menu, where is my computer?! It is people like you that have allowed microsoft to keep putting out crappy software and OS’s for this long. They don’t need to upgrade or make anything better, just as long as it is the same standard nonsense that you’re used to, you’ll still buy it.
The fact of the matter is that linux does not get viruses, spyware, or malware. On top of that it runs faster, does not have ridiculous “security updates” and never freezes, etc. Hell, if you are still that scared from branching away from windows, you can install VMware which will allow you to run linux on one of your desktops, and then you can spin the desktop and have windows on another, all in less than one second.
OP, save all the shit on your comp that you want, burn it to discs (-R) and then wipe your comp with hiren’s, then install linux, if you want you can partition your drive to have a dual boot, meaning when you boot your comp, it will ask you if you want to go into linux, or windows. And then of course there is always the vmware solution. If you have questions, PM me.

The average user does not want to do this. You may be a computer nerd and have “figured” it out the average person does not have time to relearn. They just want to boot up and go.
Windows is popular because they do wysiwyg better than anyone else. Linux is powerful, Linux is great but it isn’t for the average user. As far as partitioning and configuring a dual boot machine…not worth the hassle for the average user. Please tell me you are not one of those cocky, condesending IT admins that walks around telling people how simple Linux is while patronize them for still using windows, are you?
Linux = no application support.

Dude, i’ve used windows my entire life up until 2 months ago. You know that time most people spend watching TV? Why don’t they take that time to learn something new, such as how to install and operate an amazing OS that is free, such as linux. I installed gentoo, it is a lot more complicated because it is heavy on terminal use and the emerge command, but I learned it, it was simple because I took the time to understand it.
Now, I suggested ubuntu because it is geared towards windows users that want to switch to linux. It is helpful, and it has an extremely helpful community. For instance, when you boot from the live cd and choose to install, there are only 7 install steps and it guides you through all of them, one of which being the dual boot and configuration of partitions.
It’s funny that you say cocky IT admin because the first thing I thought of was that skit on snl where i think it was jimmy fallon that was the computer guy for some office and he would tell everyone to “Move!”
But seriously, you can’t disagree after what I have just said that people need to stick to windows when all it takes is maybe an hour of reading to further your computer experience, for free. Hell, I even told him he could PM me if he wanted help, it’s so easy and quick.

The dv9000 ships with a gig, and I’m guessing he hasn’t upgraded.

Honestly, I’d compare running Vista on 1 gig to XP on 128, maybe 256 meg. works, but doesn’t work well at all.
I could run Linux, but i dont want to. I’m tech savvy enough to figure it out, but i don’t have enough of a problem with windows to do that. This guy isn’t complaining about security updates or spyware for sure. he’s just talking about his computer speed. and switching to linux would probably make his overall actions enough slower that his situation would be worsened by the lost time. If i have a slow computer, i speed it up, i dont switch my OS.
That’s like having a car with a cylinder misfiring. We’re suggesting fix the cylinder, you’re suggesting get a new engine. Fixing just the one cylinder would fix the problem, however. sorry for all the analogies.

No. Vista is massively bloated.
I think everyone else has already bitched about Macs vs Linux vs Windows but to answer your question:
Clean the dust out of the air vents. Laptops can lower there CPU clock speed the warmer they get.
Plug into mains power. Laptops can lower clock speed when on batteries.
There is always defrag but this is mostly bullshit these days with the speed of HDDs.

What kind of disinformation is that? Canonical provides top grade support for Ubuntu that puts MS’ to shame.

I enjoy your posts because it convinces me that I am doing a good job of raising my children.
How old are you that you are able to say “using it my whole life”? 17? 18? I have underwear older than you. I pretty fucking sure I have an old 8088 that is older than you.
You have been on Linux for all of 2 months? What a fucking newbie bitch you have proven yourself to be.
But I’m pretty sure you don’t need me to tell you that, assuming you have half the fucking gray matter you pride yourself as having.
People are lazy. Just because you have a teenaged newbie chubby for Linux does not make it the right choice.
Now run along, I’m sure there is some command line shit you could be getting off to.

There is no quality software for the average user written for the linux platform.
Leopard is far superior to anything Linux can put up against it - and they share a very similar kernal.
